But you'd just have to change the scenery to "Bavarian small town with nearby mountains", and make the roads narrower, then you're there. As to clothing, in the 80ies we young Germans and young Americans dressed quite the same, and we mostly even liked the same music. What shocked me in this video was the "red flag" thing for pedestrians although there is a crosswalk. When, as a driver, you see a crosswalk, you HAVE TO slow down, look whether there are pedestrians, and if it only just SEEMS as if someone wanted to cross the road, you STOP. If you don't do that during your driving test you can just forget your license, see you next time.

Edit: Considering her second point planning ahead. We have festivals, club meetings, holidays, travel every week. There is no week when a weekend isn't free. That's most probably because during the week we stay at home and a weekend feels way different than in Germany. Living in western Germany I can confidently say that she is wrong about smiling and having small talks. That's the norm. You greet everybody, you have the "small smile" for strangers. Just a few weeks ago I was walking my son with the stroller. A woman came up to me and asked how old he is. She and she had kids of her own that were adults. We walked for 20 minutes together and had a nice talk. I live in a wonderful area with lots of US Americans. Half of my family is US American. Most Americans that move here seem distanced, don't talk, lock their doors and roll their shutters all the way down. I realized that they are all military and really young. So it's just not representative. From that day on I made it a habit to greet every new family or person that's moves into the neighborhood with a gift. I tell give them my number so I can change the heating system or help them out with certain bureocacy. In the end they opened up and we have wonderful American neighbors that totally embrace walking and hiking, relaxing on a Sunday, visiting old castles or museums, etc. We have so many friends now from the US. To this day we have to write more Christmas cards with each year going by. They influenced us in a positive way and I hope I can give it back and show them also another perspective on life. The internet speed thing depends, because some places have adequate speed, but if you're in an area with inadequate coverage you can be in for a painful time, with random periods when the internet just stops working, or your connection turns to crap. You can imagine it this way, Germany ranks fairly low for it's size and economy, but the places where the infrastructure exists, it's pretty alright, the places without are that much worse to pull the average down though. Also, especially in rural areas, forget free wifi in many places even now. I think she's overanalysing what people think in customer service as well. Plenty of people in service are nice, wish you a good day, and sometimes even ask how you are and are happy to talk to you if you open up a conversation with them. Sure you get the odd one out who has a bad day, but I'd rather have that than someone being forced to look happy because they can't afford their rent this month otherwise. I've worked in a kitchen, not service mind you, but it's considered professional to not bother the customers beyond what's needed. Going after them, constantly asking how they are or if they need anything is considered obnoxious and yes, bad service. It's the opposite to the US in that sense, if the customer wants you to order something, they can simply ask you over, as for paying at the end and the waiter not coming, I'll be honest, if the waiter doesn't come and you have to go, you just go to the counter and pay there. This is because generally, when people go into a restaurant, it's expected that they would like to socialise with the people who are around them without being interrupted all the time, and I cannot confirm this myself, but turn over is much slower in Europe. It's fully acceptable to sit down, order your food, then talk for 20 minutes after eating, then decide you would actually still like to order a wine or a dessert, then talk while waiting for it to come out, and once you finished your dessert you're free to sit and talk for another 20 minutes. The only time it get's a bit more busy is when your table is reserved for another group after around 2 hours, restaurants generally work in 2 shifts, starting at 18:00 with a lot of people pouring in for the first group of reservations, planning around 2 hours until 20:00 and then at 20:00 another wave of reservations comes in, usually. Of course you can see differences here and there, but that's the usual time frame you work on for customers and how long they'll be eating, and this is when you're pushing them to be quick. In some countries or if there's low traffic restaurants have no issue if you sit there all evening talking, as long as you ordered and they aren't packed.d

It's not just Munich, that grumpiness, it's inHamburg, too. Most of the time I got a door in my face just 2steps behind going through, not in Norway, maybe twice in 20 years.

The fairy tale about customer service is mostly untrue. Of course, Germans are a bit colder, but that's because of our mentality. But in the USA, extorting overpriced tips and bad service is not very customer-friendly either, and many service staff are punished if they don't do their job. In Germany, Walmart also wanted to introduce something like this 20 years ago and failed miserably. People either saw it as a fake or as an attempt at flirting.

For anyone wishing to move it's worth keeping in mind that the US is also highly varied in culture and landscape. If you want the quiet, less problematic life, I would probably not flock to the biggest cities in any country. For an English speaker, German is easy to pick up (over time) than many other languages. Yet for moving in general, the grass is always greener on the other side. There may be some drawbacks, but that doesn't mean you can't ever holiday back in the US to see how things change over time. Seeing things from the outside may really bring home the direction a country is heading. As for pledging allegiance in school, that can be seen in a lighthearted way, or as indoctrination, but it all depends on whether you have any choice and most of all, if there is public pressure to do so. The same can be said when kids used to sing traditional songs in school. The child doesn't choose what to believe in, regardless.

I have been living in France this past year. I was literally within two months of returning to the US, but now with the election it is becoming more and more doubtful. I am torn. I have two granddaughters and I am afraid for them and feel like I am abandoning them if I don’t return. This past year in France has been wonderful and it opened my eyes to a whole new way of living. I was fortunate, I lived in Colorado. It is one of the best states to live, but there are issues there too.

Funny, i am from Berlin but studies in munich. And i had the same feeling. Munich felt alot more harsh than Berlin tbh. Especially store clerks, bus drivers and the like. Not that everyone smiles in berlin (heck thatd be creepy), but it felt more neutral. You ask, you get an answer. In munich, you ask, you also get an answer, though from time to time, you get an eyeroll or an "hugh" before that. But like Feli and Nate already mentioned: Not everyone is like that. It just felt the overall "mood" so to speak went abit more in that direction.

15:35 I do live in a pretty rural village of 800 people in northern Germany and the internet speed was very bad (~25MBit/s down, 6MBit up) because of the old copper telephone lines. That changed a few years ago as my provider replaced them with fiber optic. It's 500MB (down) and 150MB (up) now, just like the tariff I booked (€35 per month) says. Not superfast, but fast enough for me.
