Another very nice piece from the shop of the WYOMING WOODTURNER. As usual you do nice work Sam. Of course you started with a nice piece of cherry. That never hurts. Thank you for sharing Sam. Always watching for your productions.

Sam, roughed out bowls are just positive inventory. As many times as I have see dc hoses and hoods set low as yours, it finally hit me seeing yours today. Yes, I need to dramatically lower mine for better results! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!

I have a couple of your "unfinished business" items to be done yet! Just a heads up, you will most probably find unfinished business for quite a while! When helping pack I put things wherever there was a spot! LOL! Great character in that bowl. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Dave

Sam glad you found one of those elusive Round2Its and were able to finish that nice cherry bowl. Could you please tell what chuck and jaw sets you used. The first sort of small conical ones looked very useful. Thanks. Cheers, Tom

Hi Sam and thanks for another great video. I always learn something from your videos. Hoping you might be able to explain for me why you chose to use a spindle gouge to finish the rim and top inside of this bowl instead of a bowl gouge? Also how you knew it was okay to do that given the grain orientation on this small bowl? Thanks so much, Ted
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
Ted That is a really good question. It tells me that you're thinking about when to use a particular tool or not. First, the spindle gouge can certainly be used on a bowl; and there are times when you might use a bowl gouge on a spindle turning. First of all there really is not a safety issue. Not like using a spindle roughing gouge on a cross-grain piece of wood. That's another story. I hope you understand that that can be very dangerous. I use the spindle gouge on the rim because it's a smaller tool and the profile allows me to do a little bit of contouring around the rim and the opening of the bowl. Another example, is I use a small bowl gouge on some of my smaller pieces because it is stiffer and does not vibrate as much. But I can still use it to detail the work. Hope this helps Sam

That all makes good sense Sam. Thank you for the quick response. Great new shop by the way, well done. Ted

Always enjoy the instructional videos you produce and consistent beauty and art. Curious, how long would it take you to do finish a bowl without the video production?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. There was a time when I would go out in my shop during the year and produce 150 or more pieces. But then I would have to sell them. I have reduced that number to maybe 50. The reason for this is the more stuff I make, the more stuff I have to sell. Now to your question. Making something while I am making a video does slow me down a bit, but not too much. I also do a lot of work off-camera. I do enjoy making videos. It is in its own right a creative process. And if the same time I get to make something but I usually do put up for sale. I appreciate the question. Thanks Sam

Good information as always. What is the new blue box attached to your lathe do?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
The blue box is an electrical converter. When a lathe has a variable speed feature, it must have a converter. (I am not an electrical engineer so that's as far as I will go with that explanation ha ha). It has something to do with turning 110 power into three phase power. If anyone else reads this and knows more about it please add a comment. For anyone purchasing a lathe, I feel it very important to have a machine that will be variable speed and will also turn in reverse the option is to have a number of pulleys that you must change the belt to change the speed range. Anyway this converter is a really expensive part of A lathe, I know because I shorted one out and had to replace it. It was $800. Hope this gives you a little bit of info thanks Sam.

Nice piece of cherry Sam, how is that Scout working out? All the best from Clancy MT
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER5 жыл бұрын
I have been pleasantly surprised with the Scout lathe. I am not turning really large pieces every day-so I find myself going to this Scout more and more. It does have a 14 inch swing which is not enormous compared to my Powermatic or the sweet 16, But it offers a little bit more size for other pieces I turn. I had a student in here a week ago and this lady is about five feet 5 inches tall. I simply tilted the top-down a few notches which allowed her to return in a normal position. I have the lathe adjusted for my own height which is 6'3". So for this lady it was really way too tall. I think the Scout is a big step up from perhaps a jet midi lathe. And for anyone not turning really big stuff it's a great lathe. And I find the quality of these robust lathes is really the best I have ever seen in a would lathe. Sam
