Journalism dies without journalists policing bad journalism. Science and academics also die without scientists and academics policing bad science and academics. These endeavors are a direct result of a concerted effort to fight misinformation. I think you need to develop more sophisticated ideas of information policing. The ideas you have ultimately amount to looking the other way while the frauds take over. Think about transparency, accountability, and relying on sister organizations around the world, to establish integrity in these fields. I think if you had better critical thinking education you'd have better solutions to epistemic problems.

@ywtcc
@ywtcc 15 күн бұрын
It's a completely dysfunctional position he's taking. The kind of freedom of speech that's practiced in America is apparently compatible with a total absence of credible journalism. It's compatible with fraudulent economics, and fraudulent psychology. It's compatible with local governments denying all rights to the homeless, for example. American Liberalism is 100% compatible with slavery. It's a defunct ideology that's been repeatedly refuted, and effectively made unconstitutional with the civil war amendments. You want to know what the actual issue is? Your rights aren't worth anything unless you're willing to hold public officials accountable for denying them. They're also not worth anything if public officials have granted themselves the right to ignore anyone without an attorney. Liberal rights are not a new thing. Start talking about holding public officials accountable, and you'll make those rights accessible to the people that actually need them. Don't look for political wisdom from American Liberals and Libertarians. They're routinely in violation of their own laws, and without rule of law, you don't have any protecting against rights abuses whatsoever.

There is no limit to free speech. One can choose not to listen but one cannot prevent the speaker from speaking.
@ywtcc
@ywtcc 15 күн бұрын
You can ignore, but you can't choose not to listen. Ears don't work like that. Also, ignorance has its limits. Ignore cries for help, or claims of fraud, and you can get yourself thrown in jail for that. Speech around business contracts, consensual romantic relationships, matters of the court and legislature, are all highly regulated. I agree there should be a forum where speech is truly free - but that same forum is a place where speech can't be taken seriously. There's a give and take here. Do you want to be taken seriously? Then you need to accept accountability for abusing speech. Rights come in conflict with each other, and speech is often the right that's the most civilized right to curtail.

Glenn helped me to see the inconsistencies of many conservatives and right wing influencers as regards defending the rights to free speech and association. Glenn has also been consistent in fighting the neocons and warmongers in the US and the world at large. We need more peace and less wars in this world and Glenn has been on the right side of history. greenwald is my favourite journalist, i think, perhaps after taibbi. but the casual "a study has now proved that 99% of these protesters were perfectly non-violent" is asinine. there is "a study" to show anything one wants to show -- including, lately, that cowe farming is supposedly carbon-positive, funded, as one might expect, by boviculture conglomerates. i am on the UT campus, which certainly did not see anything close to the worst of these protests, and i personally witnessed two obvious assaults in one single heated afternoon. free speech is fine, even when people are saying asinine things. but hysterically emotional mobs are awful, and *obviously* they invite violence, even from those who would in any other context never dream of perpetrating it. let's not rely on ideologically weighted "studies" to hagiograph stupid kids doing stupid things, even when we want to defend in principle their right to do them.

I agree with Glenn on most things but not the idea that government should break up monopolies. The long history of regulatory capture by corporations should provide ample evidence for this. The monopolies that do need to be broken are the central banks, especially the Federal Reserve Bank of the US (the Fed) which prints money at the behest of the government, creating the not-so-hidden regressive tax of inflation that most harms the working class and anyone trying to save for the future.

Exactly. And do we want China's tech giants, with their government's control, become the global gatekeepers of information with an AI promoting their authoritarian social credit system. Smaller is not necessarily better.

We do NOT have a free market and government regs are what allow these monopolies to happen, so the government has a responsibility to break up those monopolies which would never have occurred without government interference in the first place.
@TheHappyNAPster
@TheHappyNAPster 15 күн бұрын
@@ohsweetmystery I know we don't have a free market, but saying the government has the responsibility to fix the problem it created and actually expecting that to happen is a bit fanciful. Corporations are recognized in the US as "legal persons" by the govt. Perhaps that needs to be changed so that the human beings who run said corporations can actually be held responsible for their actions, rather than granting blanket immunity as was done with pharmaceutical companies.

He touches on an important concept. “Counter protests” should not be allowed against protests that are permitted. Cities and law enforcement need to understand this. OTOH, protests on private property without permission, or without permits should get no such protection. In fact, those protestors might be culpable much like robbers are culpable for damages they did not intentionally create during their robberies.

Hey that "visibly jewish guy" was trying to get an anti semitic reaction for his camera crew, and if you watch the other footage you can see the police telling him that he can't walk against the flow of the crowd, he failed to get his anti semitic click bait and the best he could do was get the police who were just trying to prevent trouble to say something inept

Yeah, sure, the shooter _could_ be mentally ill, but that could also mean he would be an easy patsy for some government to manipulate into assassinating the PM of Slovakia. Also, one of Slovakia's former PM security detail came out to say that it was odd that none of the security that was around the PM at the time tried to either stop the gunman or protect the PM. They just let the guy get off five rounds before tackling him? So that gives credence to people making their presumption that this was a targeted hit by someone other than just this lone gunman, and where have we heard _that_ phrase uttered before: "lone gunman?" 🤔 I've always understood how Glenn speaks about free speech versus violence. And I have since I was about 8 years old, too. And I'm 55 now. I had _really smart_ teachers in grade school. It's only when I arrived at grades 7 through 12 that I realized _those_ "teachers" were merely grooming us to be more like those kids moving down the conveyor belt and into the meat grinder in the movie classic, _Pink Floyd: The Wall._ Just fodder for some corporate monstrosity.

I think Glenn wasn't familiar with the "you are openly Jewish" thing, which was clearly a case where the guy was trying to cause trouble (criss-crossing the demonstration with thugs) and what the officer should have said was "openly Zionist". As it so happens, many Jews on the Palestinian demonstration.
