I am of the opinion that there is a ±2 year span around the "official" boundary of the generations, and anyone born in that window could easily fall into "the generation before" or "the generation after" the one they're supposed to be. Like, if you're born in 1964 but all of your friends were younger than you and you think more like people born in the late-1960s/early-1970s, you're not a Baby-Boomer, you're Gen-X. Conversely, if you're born in 1965, are the youngest child, and have older siblings and hung out with them and their friends, you're outlook could very well be more that of the Baby-Boom Generation, even though you're _technically supposed to be_ Gen-X.

I was just talking to my partner about this. How I feel my parents didn't really want kids but had to because it was expected. I was told a lot that I was not planned, not loved, and all the physical, verbal, and subsequent mental abuse that goes with that shit. I decided to get sterilized because I didn't want to deal with possibly messing up an innocent life with the baggage I carry. Needless to say, I don't speak to my parents any longer because they chose to exclude me from their lives once I broke free from their neurotic hold.

The baby shaking thing is different. They still give very strict advice about putting baby down in a safe place and take a break because shaking them happens when parents are totally sleep deprived and overwhelmed, not necessarily because they’re abusive psychos or something. As others have said, that "have you hugged your kids today" PSA came out in either '75 or '76. There was also another one in the 60's, "it's 10pm, do you know where your children are?" Depending on where they were, and whether or not the streetlights were on yet, they did not. When my mom was a child, her curfew was the streetlights. As long as she was home by the time they came on, she wasn't late.

I mean to be fair I'm early gen Z (born 2001) and it was the same for me as a kid. I'd go out to play with the neighborhood kids and our curfew would be when the streetlights came on. When i went to job corps in Maine in the 2010s, the homophobic governor came to do commencement at the graduation. Every queer student graduating that year refused to shake his hand, and the same-sex couples kissed crossing the stage. When i graduated the following year, it was after Colin Kaepernick was fired for his protests at games. So a large number of us took a knee or otherwise refused to interact in anyway with the national anthem. I hope the spirit of rebellion is still carrying on

The answer to "when did this become a thing" is around the 1800-1900s but mostly solidified around the time right before ww1 and later reinforced after ww2 (at least the modern version, it's an on and off thing throughout history). It's a product of nationalism and the "ideal people", the white picket fence thing is the same thing. It was an ideal that was reinforced by propaganda during a period of unpresedented tragedy and extremes to be able to mold the population into easily defined categories. Where there's categories there's "us" and "them" which makes discrimination easier for everyone to spot and tell on so that the population could be "cleansed" into the ideal of the state. Basically it's bs.

Kentucky native here and that PSA was just one of the weird shit we seen here in the early 80’s. Since my mom had 4 kids and was a single parent I lived on my nes. I loved Tetris. I have beat that game many times. I remember the first time I showed everyone there was an eleventh level because it doesn’t show up on the select menu. Aahh the good ol days 😂

You have to be registered to vote. they check your citizenship, address, and other qualifications... you also have to be registered with the right political party to vote in many US primaries, and you can't be a felon. So in a way, yes, you do need to register and pass an evaluation to vote... it's much more than you have to do to buy a gun via private sale in many states. source: in Arizona my friend bought an AR15 from a guy they met online in a Starbucks parking lot. 100 percent legal there and in much of the American southwest/south. literally harder to register to vote.

In my last state if you didn't register with your party of preference in addition to registering to vote you simply didn't get to participate in primaries. When I moved to my current state it took hours of research to figure out what I needed to do to make sure I was able to vote in every way I possibly could. There's a lot more to obtaining the right to vote in American public elections than your initial registration, and the extra work is complicated and requires extensive knowledge of our political systems, parties, etc., often much more than the average 18-year-old eligible voter has encountered. If the system is forcing you to possess extracurricular knowledge as a precursor to qualifying to vote, you're having to pass a test to earn what should be a right.

As for what that unhinged lady at the hairdresser was trying to do, I guarantee she was trying to provoke the guy into laying a hand on her / faking that he was so that she could get him in actual legal trouble for assault and possibly call the cops, spin a bunch of bullshit and get him arrested for daring to upset her somehow. Sadly this is a common enough tactic unhinged enough Karens do. I've heard it's done a lot to black people/anyone slightly dark bc of course but I'm sure it happens to men in general too.
