You make it sound more nefarious than I think it is. I used to work for one... traveling around, doing tech stuff and whatever else. They weren't scheming about all that... but all those things were a by-product of how they live and how they construct a societal shell around themselves... they have their own bubbles... they travel from rich place to rich place on their private jet or yacht... they do not want to see poverty or any of the damage they have caused... and they are surrounded by sycophants who enable this bullshit... beyond that, they have something deeply wrong with them where billions of dollars somehow isn't enough. So, they lobby for all the tax money to be used on the systems that benefit them... they get the investments moved into their areas... then I think a lot of their underlings are more the ones who do the social engineering. There's a whole industry of people who cater to these rich assholes and I see much of the blame with them... though, I'm sure you're right to a degree... there must be some who are just evil schemers, but I don't think it's the majority.

I don't jump on the social media bandwagon these days but I have had a Facebook account for a long time and I keep it at this point because for some extended family and long-time acquaintances its the only line of communication I have with them. But I immediately deleted the app from my phone after watching this video. I may end up just getting rid of Facebook entirely, and I may have to just accept that there are certain people I will never speak to again because of that.

Yeah, I'm just done with social media. Done with humans in social environments. No in-person get togethers, no online get togethers. It's just not worth it. Meta, X, Bluesky, etc, they can all just fail as well. I'm tired.

Like I literally do not care about all the data collection. I have no issue with them collecting all that and using it. I DO however HATE all forms of advertising. Even your sponsored bit is hard to get through. So the incessant increase on advertising importance just kills it all for me. Year 2000 was great! Only geeks (me included) were on internet, forums were all about games, star trek, music (and porn of course :). Politicians at that time didn't know how to open email, let alone understand the deeper concepts of Internet. We could upload/download anything, even if it was over dialup. Then over the years, other people came to the party. And their friends. And their weird uncles. Then came Zuck, which brought all aunties and all distant family to the internet. Then Twitter came. This is when politicians saw it as a way to bypass media and shout directly at consumers. All the sudden internet was no longer the place to connect and share, but place to shout, harass, call each other idiots and posting death threats. Then regulators started seeing that people spend more time on the internet reading posts and watching youtube than reading magazines and watching tv, so they started to regulate internet and basically start sucking the life of what internet used to be. At around 2010 I said to myself - enjoy the free internet while it still is free. I used to be liberal, you know - no borders, share everything, peace and love, now i'm much more defensive, realizing that we have to get the pitchforks and defend our internet, or "they" are going to take it away from us. Bit by bit.

I'll NEVER forget how years ago, my Facebook account got locked out for the LAMEST *bullshit* reason: I was improperly representing an organization... that no one could name! All of the appeals were a complete waste of time and it was FASTER to make ANOTHER Facebook account! Eventually, I got fed up with Facebook and joined Twitter back when co-founder Jack Dorsey was still the CEO, which has since turned into a humongous shit show when a certain overvalued narcissistic egomaniac became its new owner! I don't need to uninstall Threads because I NEVER started on it! I don't trust another Zuckerberg related app/site and that was before finding out all of the bad news shown in this video that I can't say I'm surprised about!

I really wish more people would get on to Mastodon and stuff like that. Having forms of social media that is run by the community instead of billionaires is so much better. People will not have to worry about all their data being stolen, while at the same time having a more personal community to bond with. Plus, while the big dogs refuse to stamp out hateful content on their platforms due to it generating way more engagement, most people really don't want to deal with that garbage, and if they were more in charge would put a stop to it. I think having social media IS a fun thing and it should be enjoyable to use, but there's no excuse for massive companies to take all of our data. If these platforms were more about community driven content, I think for the most part that kind of stuff would be removed. You'll have those corners where hatred thrives, but it wouldn't be the mainstream like it is now. I GENUINELY hope those sorts of open platforms catch on as time goes on. I think that would bea much better future for social media in general than what we have now.

Discord is the only social media im on. Basicly irc with voice chat there are servers and channels for everything any niche you can find your people for all your interests. You can use it a lot like a forum but its diffrent forums are better for finding information, discord is better for finding brains

Discord isn't encrypted or able to indexed for search engines. I forsee a lot of very valuable info and resources being totally lost when these discord echochambers implode due to petty drama and cliques. The modding scene for various games is plagued with this problem.
