I have been in exterior cleaning for over 30yrs, jokers like this have always made it an uphill struggle to win work. Fortunately after all this time I seem to have plenty to keep me busy, but it still makes me angry to see stories like this. Crack on and keep raising the profile of our industry, its good work.

1) I'm glad she called the police. A similar scam happened to my sister. I had asked the city to prune our street trees and they hired a contractor that then hired another contractor. An employee of the second company came onto the lawn, hacked off about a third of a tree, and asked my sister for $400. When I complained to the city, they were unable to tell me which company was involved. It was very frustrating. 2) It's too bad the neighbor didn't also hire you at the same time.

2 - I imagine this happens loads. The neighbours might be off for work or on holiday or whatever. They might not have known at all until they returned to see the other half of the roof all brand spanking clean. I would say it's up to the customer whether or not to inform the neighbours to see if they want to join in. And even then, maybe they didn't want to. My neighbours actually had their whole roof replaced some time ago. I wish they had told me about it, because I might have liked to join them. But at some point I returned from work and they were already half-finished. No point in joining in anymore at that point.

As a prevoously approved contractor for London Borough Councils, I applaud your professionalism and the way you look after your kit. Kudos to you sir. Only one thing I would probably have done and that would have been to do the small roof last for fear of detritus falling onto it after having just cleaned it. But that is a small thing and no doubt you checked it afterwards anyway. I loved how you cleaned up after yourself. All my guys had cleaning kit onboard, and never left a site occupied or unoccupied anything other than clean enough to eat your dinner off. Great video and great work.

I had the council tell me that all the roofs and gutters in my area were being pressure washed. Around a month later, the pressure washer guys turn up. They go out back after asking to look at the job, said they’d go grab their ladders, got back in their van and drove off…….The council paid them for the job 🤦🏻 Then I had a guy from the council call to ask how the job went…….I was like, “well they were here and they did look at the job….But I’m still waiting on them coming back with their ladders.” 😂🤣🤦🏻 Dudes got paid for the 40 houses in my area and all they did was tell people they were just gonna grab ladders, then took off. 😆😂🤣

Councils are just filled with incompetent people. They have had experience with people doing this exact shit (claiming government funds for work not completed or substandard) for decades. Just look at the green energy initiatives like insulation, rendering and double glazing. It's happening with solar installations right now too. If they haven't built protection into their system of processes then in my eyes they're not looking after our money and from my time working for DWP it is imperative that government servants work with fiscal responsibility. Highlights the state of this country.
@joinedupjon
@joinedupjon 6 ай бұрын
I find it a bit terrifying when the idea of getting unemployed people to do loft insulation is raised... Sure lots of unemployed people are decent and honest, but you know no effort by the people who end up running the scheme will be put into sorting the sheep from the goats so the government will be putting characters out of trainspotting into the homes of tenants and the elderley.

I did something similar when cleaning my solar panels. I could only work for 10 minutes at a time before having to take a break and swap my arms around. You do get a surprising amount of thrust out of the nozzle which helps. You've just got to make sure you are prepared for the thrust to disappear when you turn the pressure washer off or the end will slam into the roof.
@lwilton
@lwilton Жыл бұрын
@@heleneroberge2934 As someone older than you, I suspect that you might well be able to do this if you had the right tools and are in reasonably good shape. I could do it at your age. I'm male, but I don't really think that would make all that much difference. The trick here is that he isn't holding up the whole weight of that pole. The water jet at the end is lifting it up, and he can move it back and forth just by tilting the stick slightly. You would probably still be holding around 10 pounds (or 4 kilos) in your arms for a while though.

It is a scam they are running. Well, maybe not these specially who cleaned up the patch, but many others. They clean your roof and then force you to pay for the work done. Some companies still knock on your door because they know some people forget stuff, even if there is a sign. So instead of waiting for that person to remember that they needed the roof cleaned and contact a random person, they hope to get the job. @@deepmystic6739 I mean, you can draw a dick figure with a pressure washer on someone's roof, and technically claim you are only cleaning too. But if law takes intent into question and differentiates between the dic figure and the perfect square patch, then wouldn't you be able to just go to someone's house, paint a small patch of the wall to show how good the colour looks, and try to make them pay you to paint the rest of the house? Would intent taken into account then? Would that not be defacing? And if it is, what's the difference between painting a small patch and 'cleaning' a small patch? How about sand blasting a small section of the wall to 'clean' the dirty paint then? All of these actions altered the appearance of the structure, and ultimately needs money to be 'fixed'. Idk if law takes such technicalities into question, but if it does, kinda ridiculous tbh. At the end of the day some form of damage has been done, which requires fixing, whether you call it 'cleaning' or not should be irrelevant. But yea, i know that sometimes law can have such grey area loopholes, no idea if this is really one of those tho.

Hi, looks absolutely mint now 👌 I’ve seen so many comments on other videos stating that roof tiles shouldn’t be pressure washed as it damages the surface & blows cement out from the ridges etc…. Can you give your opinion on this if you’ve got time? Is it a case of some tiles are ok whilst others aren’t? I’m genuinely confused as to what’s right or wrong. Thanks

I'm surprised that the other person on the other side didn't come out and ask you how much you charged (Unless they were at work or something). What a change! In Arizona where I live you often see clay tile roofs, but as it doesn't rain or snow much were I live is doesn't normally get like this.

A major reason I would not like living in a town house set up. The smart thing is for homeowners to cooperate and get the whole roof done in one shot by the same company/person.

I've unfortunately had a similar issue with my garden over the past couple of years. Just because it has been overgrown for a while, seemed to give certain people looking for work the "balls" to just come onto my property and attempt to start work without permission and without a contract drawn up and signed. They think if they do a little bit the owner will just give in and let them do the rest. Problem is there _are_ enough home owners - especially the elderly - that would give in to that pressure and let them continue. And then be stuck with a huge bill when these unscrupulous people invariably end up massively overcharging for their shoddy work. Unfortunately for them, I'm neither elderly nor a pushover so I'm always able to tell them to stop and refuse them further access or future work on my property. And then I get actually decent folk like yourself to do the work, and it's always a better result at an actual decent price done by a true professional

In the US we would establish an attachment point at the ridge and use harnesses and ropes to stand on the roof and spray it down from the top. It's a lot of work because you have to remove tiles to set boards horizontally to use as foot holds, every 4 foot (a little over a meter) then remove tiles for the set point, then re-place (that's re... place, hopefully not replace) them and clean those tiles. Some contractors may use your system, but I've never seen those power washer extentions that long before in the US... but I was never part of a true for a dedicated exterior washing service, rather I was part of a crew for a demolition and remodeling crew that offered exterior washing has one of our services, so there's that too, but we did power wash two tile roofs while I was there (two years)... and probably about 20 shingled roofs.

I tucker poled a big 5 story office park building in a long day... It was with one of the old aluminum ones, not the newer carbon fiber ones and the top floor needed a 12 ft addon extension. And I thought that job was brutal... Working a 30 ft pole over a roof on a scaffold would be so much more brutal... nice work.

Back in the 1960s/70s/80s a friend of mine was a very successful chimney sweep, down in Kent, but even then there were cowboy sweeps who not only broke health and safety, by not doing any, amazing they didn't break their necks, but damaged a lot of pots by scrabbling around on roofs, interfering with flashings etc. He often saved customers £££ by spotting damage when out and about. I bet you were good at Tetris, eh?

You are good. You are thorough. I know here in the states, most communities require permits to solicit. And most solicitors won’t get one. So the first question we ask is do you have a permit to solicit? Then inevitably people will post their pics in the neighbors part of Ring network. Shuts that stuff down fast. I feel for your customer. I’m elderly and live alone and I hate strangers coming to the door.
