The UK has much more railroading history than the US and beautiful motive power that set records for speed. Wide open spaces in the US required massive motive power for the long drags over Sherman Hill and the Wyoming high country... I hope I live long enough to see this old guy come blowing into our city again all dressed up in UP livery ready to assume public relations duties.Our city was once tracks end when the transcontinental road was built in the 1860s.You know that the US values you as a friend we can rely on no matter what. Regards to you and your countrymen.

As much of a thrill as it was to see the Big Boy rolling, it was painful to see it being towed. He needs to be hissing and bellowing steam. That "Beep, beep", from the diesel was sicking too. I long for the steam driven classic train whistle, coaxed to give some personality by the engineer. Then, there is the sacrilegious usage of 4014 on the yellow beeper pulling the old boy. Done griping now. Awaiting the wonderful day when the real 4014 will pull a load again. Thank you SteamUP, for covering these momentous efforts for us. And certainly thank you UP, for caring enough about your incredible history to bring this veteran back to life.

I will be going south to see the Big Boy operate for sure. You are So Lucky!

Okay people 4014 by far is the most beautiful locomotive by all means as far as I am concerned along with thousands and thousands of others. We patiently wait for her target arrival date 2019 for the 150th anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad. 1941 she was built, retired 1959, only because of more economical locomotives were being built. We all have a passion for trains and model railroads. N scale is quite suitable for me and a challenge because of it's size. If I were to mention how many Big boy's I own you might ask why? Hold on folks! soon the world "yes" the world will see what some have never seen. I have one question or should I say a huge request, Mr Ed Dickens can I wear your hat, trace back all your experiences, download your knowledge into my head, sit in 4014's seat, spill a bit of coffee in the cab? I wanna go for a ride, what a ride you've been on all your life. I truly think if this man by himself never showed up, this upcoming event would have never been thought of. Thanks UP and your entire staff and one great man.

+Michael Wood I've been following the news coming out of Cheyenne about 4014, and I understand that the restoration will take more time. Having retired from coal fired power generation, I understand the problems that result in using steam to generate power. I hope to be around when 'Big Boy' steams into Columbus under its own power. I showed 'Lasts of the Giants' to my American history students every year when we got into western expansion. I and many others appreciate the UPRR and all the volunteers who are participating in the restoration of this historic locomotive.

I am certain that the king of steam will trot all over his realm with pride and Nebraska is UPs home turf! Being a Nebraskan and loving railroading I make sure to check out 4023 in Omaha everytime I head that way. It just blows your mind just how big these large steamers are. I was fortunate to see 4014 at the fairgrounds before they pulled it on the live rail after they finished transferring it. I will say the steam team took GREAT care to make sure 4014 was ready for the move. UP and Nebraska grew up together. If you see a map of Nebraska many of the larger towns are along the UP (Omaha, Lincoln, Columbus, Grand Island, Kearney, Northe Platte, etc). Thats because these towns had backshops and other repair facilities for the steamers. I am sure once 4014 is finished they will send it along the Overland Route (UPs name for the Transcon Railroad that runs through our towns). I live near GI and its a sight to see them up close when they service them almost every time they run through which is quite often (I take the kids to see 844, and eventually 4014 and 3985 when they get finished). btw being a young adult and having watched 'Last of the Giants' I think its great that you show it to your students. Make sure to plan ahead a field trip for them when 4014 is scheduled to run through! Having them witness history that makes more then the local 5 o clock news is rare! Cheers

The closeup at 20:55 shows pretty well that the main drive shafts - the pieces that connect the drive bars to the cylinders - are missing. Shouldn't be a problem to build in new parts...
@ExoVyper6 жыл бұрын
Jürgen Kuhlmann pretty certain they’ve been removed prior to 4014’s towing as towing with the pistons still in the cylinders could lead to damage
@jurgenkuhlmann91946 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this info...well, from a mechanic's point of view, this makes sense! But anyway, the 4014 still is good shape, if one considers that the last 4000 series engines were finally put out of service sometime in the 1950s - with nearly all of the 25 engines of this type now scrapped, the 4014 seems to be the last on this planet, isn't it?
@ExoVyper6 жыл бұрын
Jürgen Kuhlmann i can’t really confirm is 4014 is one of the last as i’m afraid i only know about big boy, i know more about the UK’s engines than i do about american ones. From an outside view 4014 certainly seems to be in great shape for her age, the only things i would be worrying about is items like her boiler rivets or the boiler tubes from the prolonged ‘mothballing’ It’ll be a mountain of work for her to be put to work on the rails again but one i know not only me is dying to see :)
@jurgenkuhlmann91946 жыл бұрын
Hello again! Well, as far as I know, after having been towed to Cheyenne, WY by two Diesel type 4014 [sic!] Diesel engines, the 4014 is due to be running again sometime by next year. Just check some videos published by the chief engineer of the repair shop! As to the "mothballing" you mentioned; the first thing to start with during the overhaul of a steam engine is to replace the boiler, as it has to withstand high pressures, so there is no chance to run a veteran engine with the old boiler in! Cheers, Jürgen!
@NEAFarmKid40106 жыл бұрын
Jürgen Kuhlmann Actually there are eight surviving Big Boys. The 4004 resides in Cheyenne, WY, the 4005 in Denver, CO, the 4006 in St. Louis, MO, the 4012 in Scranton, PA, the 4014 which is being rebuilt, the 4017 in Green Bay, WI, the 4018 Frisco, TX, and the 4023 in Omaha, NE. There are two Challengers left, the 3985 which is in for a rebuild, and the 3977 in Codys Park, NE. There are 4 FEF locomotives, the 814 (FEF-1) in Council Bluffs, IA, the 833 (FEF-2) in Ogden, UT, the 838 (FEF-3) in Cheyenne (being cannibalized for parts, but if it keeps the 844 running I'm fine with it to an extent), and of course the magnificent 844, the only mainline steamer in the U.S. to have never been retired by a class I railroad.

SteamUP According to the 'Trains' Extra Special issue dedicated to the Big Boys, in one article they said with the firebox damage 3985 suffered due to the failed draft improvement experiment, they've decided to focus on fixing up 4014 first, and so repair work on 3985 has been put on the back burner. It'll be quite awhile as a result before we see 3985 pulling a load again.

Actually, some of the work started in California, just to get the wheels to safely roll a thousand miles on the rails after sitting for over a half a century. Setting UP lubrication lines checking brakes disconnecting some parts and probably much more that I would not understand. In Cheyenne it could be like a frame UP restoration they wont really know till they take it apart and really see.

The 4014 is being rebuilt in Cheyenne, WY. It is planned to be running again next year. This will be the only 4000 series engine in service, so I am already saving money to see this Giant!
