I just found you while watching a trucker video. Growing up in Algiers, the Westbank incorporated part of New Orleans I was surrounded by three, separate Rail Road tracks. I heard the train noises all hours of the night and loved it.

I really like this crossing for some reason. Probably because of how it's got a neat mix of old and new, with newer 12x24 inch lights with LEDs, an e-bell, and newer WCH gate mechanisms. However, the old cantilevers from the CNW still remain!

The gates were pretty new when I shot this. They replaced a pair of pedestals. I'm not too sure when the mechanical bell was changed out. I like this crossing as well and chose it because of the old cantilevers. There are very few of them left around here.

The pedestals were probably a pair of old Griswold EM gate mechanisms, if I had to guess.

For sure. The Kenosha Sub was double tracked until 1989 so most of the crossings were gated and a lot of them were Griswolds.

I love these bells. I love your videos too. There is one thing I like about crossings like this. I like it when the gates go all the way down and the bells are still ringing. Good luck on making more videos. This is an excellent one :)

As a kid growing up in the 50's, I can remember a little shack which a man would lower the gates at that same location. Don't remember when they went to the auto gate. Then they had 2 sets of track and was run by C & NW. The 400's passager trains would haul ass down them rails ! Be nice to see some footage at that same location with the vintage rail units ...

It's a bit of an uncommon sight on this line but you do see the occasional manifest. They use the connection near Lake Forest, IL to get between the Milwaukee and Kenosha subs. The majority of the traffic still uses the Milwaukee though. Despite handling the heavy coal trains for Oak Creek, the Kenosha sub still has stick rail for the most part between Kenosha and St. Francis.

Thanks. I use a Canon Vixia HF-200 camera with a Canon DM-100 external mic attached to it. The fade in / out is a recording option on the camera.

Brenton, I worked for 20 years as a parks gardener and probably spent many hundreds of hours during those years cleaning up the graffiti left by gangs and vandals. So I have a BIG HATRED for this vandalism and the millions it cost nationwide to clean up. And I wonder how much the railroads pay for this, too, as the graffiti on trains over the years has gotten MUCH worse! The taggers call themselves "artists" but they are vandals and criminals! Really enjoyed the town scenery and thanks!

Nice video! Finally one from my side of town! Can't really tell from the video but Milwaukee Ave is near the top of a grade. I've seen a southbound struggle after one of its engines shut down. Took them 3 tries, backing up and hitting it hard before they finally made it over, with the local trailing closely behind. I wondered why they didn't have the local help by pushing on the back. Wish I would have gotten a video of that.

The Farm lead is pretty much used by just the rock job and the local, unfortunately. Union Pacfic laid down welded rail on it several years back but it's still 10 mph. Track warrants are only used north of Kenosha. That part of the Old Line went dark when it was single tracked between there and St. Francis in the late 80's / very early 90's.

If I owned a railroad this is what I'd do instead of replacing the entire signal. Just replace the bells/lights ONLY when needed like this crossing and give it a few coats of that chrome/silver paint and make them look new again!

Thanks. It's damn near impossible (for me, at least) to catch something on the Kenosha Sub besides coal, locals and the rock job. I have to drive clear across town to get to the tracks. I heard this guy get a warrant from Kenosha to St. Francis and hopped in the car, taking a chance that it might be a manifest freight. It just happened to work out perfectly. Too bad you didn't have to a camera to catch that southbounder struggling!

This may be your LONGEST train video yet! And while I HATE train graffiti since it IS vandalism, the car with the "Frankenstein" character was the most "artistic" that I have seen of ANY of your train videos. And all those engines for this very slow train was also interesting. Thanks for sharing!

I thought so. Either that or they used the connection line in Kenosha since it claimed a track warrant from Kenosha to St. Francis. Winnetka seldom sees any freights.

Thems my old stompn' grounds. The old South Milwaukee train depot is just to the left of the video being shot. My Grandfather left for WWII from that train depot. I Had a paper route about 3/4 mile west of these tracks. Pretty sure I see you filming trains these days on my way home on Oakwood in Oak Creek.

They're pretty old so there aren't too many of them left around anymore. I've seen that type of bell placement before too but again, it's not too common.

Not many manifests use this line anymore since CNW got the boot. Would this sight happen to be a good sign? Who knows where this train started, and if it traveled through Glencoe, Winnetka, and the other North Shore towns before hitting South Milwaukee.

You're right. It's now my longest video. He was moving pretty slow towards the end there though. :) I have the same feelings about the graffiti as you. Some of it is very artistic, but it is indeed vandalism. I hope you enjoyed the town scenery like you do the country settings!

Brenton81 my main reason for hating General Signal is because since the rebuild in Las Vegas, the bells are like nothing but GS type 2 e bells. I like Safetran’s e bells but I never did care so much for GS. I like the type 1 bell. Nipton Road a type 1 but I never got to record it. My main problem with this crossing is the cantilevers are fancy but the modern e bells and the old fashioned cantilevers just don’t really go together.

It isn't as busy as it was in the C&NW days but the local does go through and the occasional freight makes an appearance now and then, when they can't run on the Milwaukee Sub. The quarry train comes up from Racine once in a while too. There was a long mixed freight like the one in this video that passed through yesterday afternoon.
