The F14 from Maverick is an actual plane from the San Diego Air and Space Museum. It had no engines so needed to be towed for the scenes. The canopy actually didn't open so they had to temporarily re-install the hydraulics to make it functional. So that "canopy bounce" is legit.

Man, I love, and never realized, how much Tom Cruise did to honor the guys who got to do what the first movie advertised, the actual people who chose to enter the US Navy after seeing Top Gun. You have to remember that he didn't have much to do with the first movie as he was starting out his acting career. With this movie, where he did have influence, he honored the people that have a true connection with the first movie.

I was an ejection seat mechanic for the A-6E Intruder when Top Gun came out. We laughed because when you see them flying behind their head was a Brass disc on the seat. We called it a Starwheel it connects to the Top Latch Mechanism that holds the seat to the telescope rod that is bolted to the jet. That Starwheel is only used for removing the seat from the jet. The seat would slide right out if you tried to fly with it on.

The Tomcat in flight was CGI, The Tomcat on the ground was a kitted out Display of Buno 159631 c/n17, They re-engaged the Hydraulics for the canopy and the flight control surfaces, at a fraction of their normal speed, the scenes were filmed slow and sped up in post. Buno 159631 has since been returned to San Diego Aerospace museum. The Take off roll was a truck towing the display unit, then just sped it up and added visual fx in post. The same F-14 Cockpit cutout they used for Top Gun was used for the F-14 Cockpit Scenes in Top Gun Maverick.

When TG Maverick was release I wanted to dislike it as the original Top Gun is one of my all time favorite movies, but when it opened with the same music sequence as the original I was more receptive. Then the inter-ties/nods to the original movie were awesome. The finale to this fantastic movie was seeing a Tomcat fly again, I know it was CGI, but it still made the movie special and brought the movie full circle. It was great when the two officers at the end gave maverick the fist pump and the nod, they understood why mav was a valuable asset to the navy. I also like that the final mission flying scenes were filmed in Washington State, the crew was housed and the jets based out of NAS Whidbey Island and the scenes were shot in the North Cascades. Awesome!!!

Cyclone at that moment.. GOT what ICE saw in Maverick.. up to that point he didn't... I think he also knew/realized who was "the best pilot" at that moment as well... Also loved Cyclone's expression.. as Mav "Buzzed the tower" at mach 1 one more time before landing on deck... LOL!!

I helped build Bird Number One as an instrumentation engineer on the original F-14. I didn't realize at the time that it was a special assignment But apparently, my history with the University of California provided management with some scientific chops, in addition to the unique instrumentation that this particular bird entailed. My professor and physics lab partner became the founders of Qualcomm. The thing that amazed me, was the experienced assembler technicians getting down on the ground and taking sledgehammers to shape various titanium flanges and components into a configuration that would fit. Later units would get more refined specifications, but this first bird was hand-built. 🛫 .

Right I agree, the movie did not have “catchphrase worthy” script at all, and unfortunately I think that was on purpose, since the Navy doesn’t like Top Gun movie phrases, it’s a really mellow script, nothing to meme or joke around with at all, totally on purpose

Us Air Force guys referred to the "Huffer" as a -60. Turbine powered cart that supplies compressor air and electrical power for engine start. I used that many times at Tinker AFB, when I was with the 552 EMS with AWACS, and at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan with the 376 FMS on old ass KC-135A Tankers. Fun Fact: I did a refuel on a C-141 that was dropping off 500 lb General Purpose Bombs in Saudi Arabia, during Desert Shield/Storm. I asked the crew chief how could I get to the flight deck. He said just walk across the 500 lb bombs lining the cargo compartment. He said they had no fuses in them so, yeah. So I walk across these bombs, get to the flight deck, and have a nice conversation about flight hours on there jet. He said they had 38,000 hours on that jet!!!!!! I told him most of our Tankers were right at 17,000 hours, and we flew the dog shit out of those. Fun Times.

What would the US Navy have done with that F-14 once Maverick got it on the deck? Would they have pushed it off into the ocean or would they have put it below deck in the hangar? Would they have sent it to the Smithsonian? If Maverick wanted to keep it as a war trophy would they have let him keep it because technically it was NOT US Navy property any more since it was sold to Iran. And parts from it if stolen could not be used to "upgrade" Iranian F-14's. And it was already "demilitarized" empty of all armaments except for the empty 20 mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon that could have its barrels plug welded. And since Maverick was a Captain, does rank have that much privilege? If so could he have requisitioned a replacement front gear and a replacement for the damaged engine from the "bone yard"? Because I was so hoping that at the end of that movie it was going to be parked right next to Mavericks P-51 Mustang..........
