USB-C opens up options to shed weight, improve cable management, even improve variation in "switching." Specifically in terms of saving weight, all devices could conceivably run off of one battery. Potentially a quickly swappable battery mounted in a more optimal position than at the muzzle. This would allow all your emitters to be just the "heads" to be positioned wherever you want. Also opens up options for alternating between different devices with fewer switches, introducing strobe functioning, and smart wireless functionality to adjust/toggle output of things like IR illuminators in conjunction with night vision. Most of this stuff COULD be done without USB-C, but a standard plug that has the ability to conduct plenty power and transfer data is just the right way to do the things.
@jackjohnson291
@jackjohnson291 4 ай бұрын
If that happens, and I’m sure it eventually will, I’m all ears. A battery pack mounted in a more neutral position that runs all devices, maybe even optics… that’d just be too awesome. But if it goes down, that’d be real bad news.

Mixed feelings on this - USB-C opens up a LOT of options, I like the direction that they're going here; but it also isn't exactly an ultra durable, sealed connector standard though. Should be great of your range toys, home def gun, whatever, but I wonder about actual hard use, how USB-C will hold up in a more abusive environment. I'm not sold right now, I need to see how this plays out first. But I am cautiously optimistic...

@zadotterazo690 I guess that's pretty cool. But I have to what, dock my carbine to charge the light? As an option? Cool. As a requirement, it's different. Not necessarily bad, just different. As for the cable thing, what do you mean. 18350/18650/21500 batteries are pretty easy to get and so are chargers for them. And they are cheaper than this set up. I do like the concept of a 3 piece, build your own style, switch set up though. 1. Possibly programmable Switches. 2. USB cable of whatever length/orientation you want. 3. End cap that takes usb c. This is the kind of info they should have been discussing...

I can see the benefit, but aside from flickering, my biggest gripe about tapeswitches and the like is they ALWAYS break. I’ve literally broken every single one in existence. If it’s not the switch itself, it’s the cable or where it connects to the switch or light. This can address the cable issue, but I’d seriously like to see one wrapped in kevlar and using a thick azz solid copper cable inner. Someone please over engineer a cable and switch that’s basically bulletproof. Only then will I go back to messing with them.

What conductors did they use in the connector to route the switching. Is it compliant mechanically and electrically to the spec (potentially 5v +V/-GND connected). I'm curious, but can't really poke too much into it. Tell Hop I said hi.
@triggermovies
@triggermovies 4 ай бұрын
She said you can plug your iphone and it won't damage it, so I assume it's electrically compliant with the USB spec. My guess is that the actual power switching is done inside the tail cap, and the button/cable only carries a signal. If that's the case, it means no power loss in the conductor (good news for high power heads). I hope Hop can get his hand on this soon, I'm curious as well !

For years i've thought it would be an interesting idea to have a power source(s) mounted further back on the rifle or in the stock. You could shift weight back and have much more compact lights and lasers up front. It could actually just be the light or laser head with a tailcap that has wired connection and button/switch. Even the power source (Battery) could be quick change... The future is here. Magpul Magbat anyone?

I can see the benefits, but I’d actually like to see a beefier, not smaller, cable. It’s always the weakest link in switch systems, in my experience. I’ve practically given up on messing with them. If they don’t have a backup tailcap or something (like these do have), I won’t even bother. Idk, maybe these will actually be the thing to change my mind on switches in general, but I’m not hopeful.

@@donkeydefenseSame for me, if you mean where the wire enters the plug, but it’s usually not until the tiny wire itself (inside the insulation) starts to chafe and fray before inconsistent input and failure starts. The plugs themselves usually seem to hold up fine. I always have the same issue with my phone cables. The wire weakens where it bends back and forth, right where it connects into the plug. Now that I think about it, a solid wire probably would weaken faster and eventually just snap, so a heavier braided cable would probably be best. Idk, I’m not an electrical engineer, just someone tired of hoping and wishing for a light switch that won’t blow out. I rarely have an extension cord plug break on me. Surely some company can step up and bring similar durability to both weapon light switches and phone cables alike. If it’s ever to be done, it’ll probably be addressed by the larger demand, and since virtually everyone uses phone chargers, and since these are now utilizing USB-C type connectors, perhaps that brings us one step closer?

@@Dave-0In so many ways about the industry as a whole, yes. It’s often hard to wade through all the BS to find the good stuff. If it’s what I might consider a big spend, I’ll wait until I can touch it or see someone who I trust put it through the wringer first. Just a simple demo or product placement isn’t going to tell the consumer much. It’s enough to garner intrigue, but that shouldn’t be read as a full endorsement. If someone is willing to endorse a product they haven’t fully tested, then I’d start to question both the product and the person endorsing it. All of this isn’t anything new though. It was even worse before the days of the internet, where practically every gun magazine publication was full of nothing but paid advertisements and endorsements. You can really start to see why all the old timers got so set in their ways and adopted the “if it ain’t broke…” mindset. I’m partially there myself in some ways, but I still like to see what all is out there for the fun of it. All that said, there are two main areas to keep an eye on, since the technology is rapidly improving every year, and that’s lights and optics. It seems even the manufacturers themselves can’t keep up (I’m looking at you, Surefire).
