Andrew Yang is the funniest presidential candidate in our lifetime, great candidate for a Jefferies podcast! The Freedom Dividend is more necessary now than ever. Milton Friedman the economist often cited by free market inclined thinkers himself said that if we didn't create a system like UBI it would lead to wealth concentration, and that therefore a UBI would be necessary. There's already another comment here calling UBI "communist", but that couldn't be further from the truth. Right wing capitalist economist Milton Friedman supported a UBI and thought it was necessary. So you can stop trying to label UBI and instead consider the intended goals and effects: making a healthier, happier, and smarter population who have more leverage and are harder to exploit. Pulling the economic boot off the throat of the American people is not communist, it is the bare minimum that any decent human being should do if they believe in the dignity of the individual. That sounds American to me. Do you have a friend, family member, or neighbor that UBI would help? What would happen if we tried doing that across the country for a year? Why not try UBI and see if it actually comes with negative side effects, since the positive benefits are immediately obvious?

Yeah Right wing capitalist Milton Friedman supported a UBI so does todays tech Ceo's. I wonder may if they may benefit from it somehow? Sometimes something that works for a few does not work for many. If me and a few people stand up at a football game we can see what's going on more clearly but that doesn't work if everyone at the game stands up. Giving a few people some money compared to giving hundreds of millions of people is a whole different game. There are consequences.
@samus598
@samus598 3 жыл бұрын
@@henrygustav7948 Oh wow, that's amazing! You're saying we found a policy SUPPORTED BY CORPORATIONS that would GREATLY REDUCE INCOME INEQUALITY and improve the health and wellbeing of the American populace? Wow, that's great, we should probably push for UBI before any other progressive change, given the fact that it is the MOST WIDELY SUPPORTED and LIKELY TO PASS in America. You're a great thinker Gustav, that's a very good point. Your football game analogy is laughable my dude, not even close to a cogent point. It isn't analogous in the slightest, but I think you know that. You just seem to want progressives to only push for policies that will never pass, which leads me to believe you don't really care about income inequality or the health and wellbeing of Americans. Would UBI increase income inequality or reduce it? The answer is obviously that it would reduce it. Which makes it a good policy. You can say there are better policies that would do more, but I would ask you to name a single one that has even a chance in hell of garnering the kind of support UBI has right now in a timeframe that is reflective of the urgency. "Oh let's just do nothing and let income inequality continue to increase because someday there might be a socialist revolution and if we give poor people money it might not happen" is a morally dubious position at best. I mean, yeah economists support it because it is an economically sound idea, it reduces income inequality and increases the dynamic capability of the market. There is such a thing as mutually beneficial, and since the benefit to the population receiving UBI is undebatable AT WORST you could say UBI is mutually beneficial, which means corporations who support it are either doing it out of the goodness of their hearts or more likely think they will benefit from it. I don't care. Reducing income inequality is essential and building trust in government is the only way you will ever awaken a class conscious revolution in this country, how are you going to get there when you can't even pass a single one of your proposals? Your commitment to fighting against a popular progressive policy is frightening tbh.

@@henrygustav7948 Universal Basic Income by definition goes to everyone (universal) there are many who have realized the system can not maintain the way it has going I’m more of a socialist and absolutely despise capitalism but I think UBI as well as just about every policy Andrew Yang has proposed is a logical step forward which holds the potential to create a cultural change..One which gives every single person a little bit of value and dignity

And that all of them felt the same way but no spoke up fearing retribution. The child is Yang and the townsfolk are the American people. All that’s left now is a conversation amongst the townsfolk with the emperor absent.

Ubi is already present in Alaska 53:30
@Matthew-ve7uv
@Matthew-ve7uv 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, because in Alaska that money didn't replace other social programmes, which is what Yang's policy was calling for. He's a little slimy in how he never mentions that. Larry Wilmore asked him directly about this recently and Yang completely slid over the fact that his policy was to end all other social welfare -- which was the concern Larry explicitly asked him about. Very duplicitous
@henrygustav7948
@henrygustav7948 3 жыл бұрын
by definition that is not a ubi smh...
@RealActualNews
@RealActualNews 3 жыл бұрын
@@Matthew-ve7uv From Yang’s website: Would it stack with Social Security or Veteran’s Disability benefits? Those who served our country and are facing a disability as a result will continue to receive their benefits on top of the $1,000 per month. Social Security retirement benefits stack with UBI. Since it is a benefit that people pay into throughout their lives, that money is properly viewed as belonging to them, and they shouldn’t need to choose. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is based on earned work credits. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a means-tested program. You can collect both SSDI and $1,000 a month. Most people who are legally disabled receive both SSDI and SSI. Under the universal basic income, those who are legally disabled would have a choice between collecting SSDI and the $1,000, or collecting SSDI and SSI, whichever is more generous. Even some people who receive more than $1,000 a month in SSI would choose to take the Freedom Dividend because it has no preconditions. Basic income removes these requirements and guarantees an income, regardless of other factors.
@NeonMoon87
@NeonMoon87 3 жыл бұрын
@@RealActualNews i know way too many disabled people not recieving what they properly deserve from SSDI. They would all prefer Yang's UBI. Remember, the $1,000/mo isn't a permanent number, it's supposed to rise with time as the system implements it more and better and to keep up with COL.

I wish they had discussed how to pay for ubi, because that's the biggest question people generally have. Anyone wondering, look up the "Value Added Tax (VAT)" as well as other redistribution of certain parts of the tax budget (*cough*MIC*cough*) that would allow for not only the ubi but the expansion of other essential programs that have been all but gutted. I hope to see Yang continue in politics, and the wave created by ubi break, hopefully sooner rather than later. *steps off soapbox*

The institute for economic research in Germany is in to a UBI pilot that goes on for 3 years starting this november. Not supportet by politicians of the incumbant parties tho. Germany already has a strong social safety net including universal healthcare, which is the oldest in the world btw introduced 1883 by Bismarck. And to those thinking that universal healthcare makes healtcare bad, i tell you its not. Its very affortable and fair. You never need to worry that you go bankrupt by illness or an accident. And the services are strong too. The way it works is, that you pay a fixed percentage of your income which is the half of the bill, and your employer pays the same which is the other half. And there is an upper limit, so that someone with very good income does not pay too much. And when you make a certain income you can opt out an chose a private option. Another thing is, that the gov evaluate each year what the costs will be for the coming year and set off how much the insurance companies can charge. It sounds complicated, but its not and nobody has to suffer because of the lack of money. And the regulation by the gov makes sure that the insurances are not making money off peoples suffer. And i heard quite some feedbacks from americans who experienced our system, even some just moved for treatment over here because its more affortable even for foreigners. Under the line there are some inconveniences like regulation for subsciptions, but over all it was seen as very positve and advanced. I personally can not imagine living wothout such a system. I would have died young and poor because a heavy accident when i was 19. In america they propably would have just amputated my crushed leg and send me back to the streets where i had no chnce to develope. Today i'm computer science expert and greatfull for all the support i got out of the system we have. I never think of it as a burden to pay my bills for insurance because i know it saved my live and i'm happy when it safes others too. And it does every day.

But having a guest on, then having them sit by idly while the hosts have a discussion amongst themselves doesn't really make much sense. I'm a big fan of Jim's, but if this is how this podcast works I don't know that I'll be able to tune in much. Also, I was super excited about seeing this, because I'm all in on Andrew Yang. Easiest way to prevent gambling and spending money on illegal stuff is to tie it to a debit card w/ a small fee for cash withdrawals (and the fee just goes back into the program to help pay for other people's UBI payments). You can't currently use a debit card for gambling nor is it a good idea to use one to pay for crimes. And anyone who wants to take out cash to do so will at least not technically be putting 100% of their funds into "bad stuff." And if they ever go to a financial planner or ask a family member for help, the first question will be "why are you taking out so much for cash?" PS Side benefit is if the card program is managed by a major card network like Visa or MasterCard, then you can have those companies generate anonymous reports on general spending trends for the population without ever revealing transaction histories of any individual people.

Nope...that socialism and communism. UBI as a capitalism could only work with no rules.
@ByWhatDesign

@independentCog And I'm fine with that. But if the cash withdrawal fee is, say, 10%, then to spend $100 on your addiction you will see that $111.12 has been pulled out of your account, and the other UBI participants will have the $11.12 in the shared pool. Do whatever you want with the money, but if you pull it out as cash where we can't generate useful information from it, then that's the price. And it's fair.

@independentCog OK but what I'm saying is that the reporting will be much easier for spending trends for a UBI pilot populations if transactions are sent over the card network. And there's still the option for cash. You're basically saying "but we can get survey data and use Neilson ratings to see which shows people say they like!" and I'm saying "yeah or we can just have Netflix and Amazon and Google tell us the shows they actually watch the most and the direct ratings they give the shows." Think about it. What's more accurate: what your friend says they spend their money on or their credit card statement? I'm just advocating for a way to have more purchased items show up on a statement (and therefore also show up on financial data aggregator sites like Mint or Personal Capital). You would also get the side benefit of connecting the virtual or physical cards to pay for items via Apple/Google/Samsung Pay, as well as Venmo and Cash App. Do you not see the benefits of working with an existing payments infrastructure? I think you're misconstruing what I'm saying because you think I want to control what people spend their money on. To the contrary, I want people to spend their money however they wish, but to just be able to have the *data* to PROVE TO ALL THE DOUBTERS how awesome UBI is. I am a proponent of UBI. But something that has come up in studies is that a nontrivial amount of UBI funds are extracted as cash that and the program cannot identify where the cash went (for instance in the Stockton UBI pilot it was double-digit percentage). And that will always be the case. But if you can reduce that inclination to go to cash, you get more data, and, even if someone spends their money on "bad"/"stupid" things for months or even years, it's still ok. Because you have the data. When the person is ready to budget better, they can at least go back (e.g. w/ Mint, or even just going over their previous card statements) and try to be better.

@independentCog exactly. That's what aggravates me when people talk about why they're against Ubi. It really doesn't matter what people spend their money on. Also, people that say "well why should they get paid to stay home and do nothing while I work?". You know what, if someone can live on $1,000 a month and not need to work, good for them! Why does everybody HAVE to work? If people can support themselves, they should be able to have at it. Maybe they'll spend more time volunteering? Or maybe they'll start their own form of business. Plus, people leaving the workforce just opens up more jobs for other people. Personally, I think the majority of people will continue to work their job, just be able to have a higher quality of life with that extra money. I know that I would not change my work habits, I would just put that money in the bank and use it to help save for down payment on a home. That would definitely accelerate my savings, and would put me in the position of being a homeowner a lot sooner. Which once I hit that point, I will contribute to the economy more, as I buy supplies for Home Improvements and pay more taxes, etc. And as far as what people spend it on, even if they spend it on nothing but eating out or Air Jordans, it's still money that's going back into the economy in the form of supporting businesses and the resulting tax revenue. It's really a win-win for everybody. People just get so wrapped up in thinking that they know what's better for everyone else, or that they're smarter or more deserving. It boggles my mind that people that would receive this are against it, if for no other reason that they don't want people that they deem undeserving to have it.

For those interested: You digitally give AI employee entities an identity and a social security number. Then you run the company software on a performance based payment system that generates their revenue (in a digital currency like Iota). Then you Tax that revenue as income to add to the UBI payment reserves as a compensation for the missing labour the citizens might have done. Pretty sure Yang is familiar with these possibilities but they didn't dive into it so I thought I'd share. This is being developed already.

I guess it is a type of socialism when you're using the wide definition of socialism. But Basic Income is also a policy that would strengthen the market instead of weakening it, and make market crashes less severe.
