Luckily Americas enemies are incompetent enough that the strategy will probably work.

Army Ranger 1988-2001 I’m still a fan of the woodland camo pattern. It worked fine in the desert, it just needed to get a little dusty or wear a faded set. It worked great at night. It worked well in the jungle. It even worked well in snow as long as you stayed near trees and vegetation. I hunt with woodland camo even today.

The Germans had the answer in WWll. They took a good camo pattern like oakleaf, and made two versions of reversible tunics/trousers. one was spring/summer, the other was fall/winter. Reversibles aren't perfect and tend to be a little heavy, but very effective and versatile. In the US's case, you would have to add desert/desert vegetation, made with a lighter, moisture wicking material.

Lt. Col. O'Neill did develop the first digital camo for use on vehicle in the 70s, but it was the Canadians who developed the digital camo patterns that are used on uniforms. They started fielding digital helmet covers in 1995, and entire uniforms in 1999. The Marine Corps liked what they saw, licensed it, and changed it to fit the semi-arid environments that they fight in. That's why the Marine woodland pattern has more tans and browns, whereas the previous CADPAT looks like relish with greens and black.

I was working with the first Stryker brigade testbed in Iraq. Everybody knew the ACU was terrible, from the design to the camo to the horrible pockets to the idiotic velcro that melted in the laundry and got gummed up with sand and dust. And yes, the crotch of the pants ripped open regularly and rather easily. Big Army knew all this, and went forward with the project anyways. Why? Because the Uniform Board members need their kickback money every few years. Anybody else remember the slight change in the shade of the green dress jacket back in the 1990's? You had to check the tag to see if you had the correct version.

@@traillesstravelled7901 lol. That doesn't sound like something I want to ask about anyway XD I'm just saying that you'll only find it in specific circumstances where black is functional and it is by far the exception, not the rule. Black for example is not a great choice in a desert any other place where the contrast will be striking. Sure, animals have been adept at hiding, but this does not apply across the board. Not all colors are actually meant to blend in. Yes, black bears are black, but take them out of a deep shaded area in the distance and put them in an open lit grassy area and see how well they blend. When people say "black isn't found in nature" it is a bit misleading. What we interpret as and call black does exist, but nothing is ever "black". It's usually dark shade of a specific color. Other than that, it's not saying that these dark colors can't be found being used in nature so much as it is saying that you won't find an all black forest or an all black desert. The heavy contrast will more times than not attract the eye, rather than trick it. A good use of dark colors would be to create depth and help break up shapes/outlines but all black just creates stark contrast. As for zebras, it's a very different approach. They aren't trying to hide or blend with grass so much as they are trying to become obscure when seen in a group from a distance. It's where they got the idea for dazzle paint on ships. It's a decent idea when you're only trying to confuse, not great if your goal is to go unnoticed.
@traillesstravelled7901
@traillesstravelled7901 4 жыл бұрын
@@billmelater6470 Yeah totally. Animals use dark colors, and I don't think the idea of one pattern to rule them all is the way to go. You gave the example of a black bear in a grassy field, witch fully illustrates that the appropriate pattern for that terrain, throw some Vietnam old school jungle on the bear and harder to see,perfect no, but now when he makes the tree line and sits still 👍. I just think that it's been over thought a little to much from the brain drain. And other than covert stuff, untill we all get Predator invisible, gonna be seen, especially if there's movement. Most animals,us included, see movement o.k., so just wish they'd stop trying to be overly clever , just put there head down put in some practical research and come up appropriate cammo for situation. Maybe dirty dishes, nobody in my house ever sees those, or full trash, maybe in cold climate behind the milk. 🤦

Finland did this with the old M62 uniform, one side green/brown summer camo, other side white snow camo. The same concept is still in use with the finnish M05 helmet cover, which you can turn inside out to switch between summer or winter camo. I'd imagine the reason for why it's not done anymore with the actual uniforms, is that you'd have to make the uniforms very loose to wear (more loose than they already are by design) for you to be able to fit _an entire winter jacket_ under what is essentially your summer uniform, so it's just more practical to have snow camo as an additional layer, which can then also be specifically designed for use in winter and snow without compromises to the design. So it's likely just due to the vast difference between summer and winter. That being said I don't see why the US indeed couldn't apply this very concept for a "universal" uniform if it's all about desert vs forest, which do not require dramatic differences in gear.

Honest answer: The military chose UCP largely in an effort to field a camoflouge pattern that would excell at breaking up Infra Red. The hope was that this would make us safer from next generation battlefield threats. As is often the case, the brass saw this as a huge advantage...but the men immediately understood that the Army had managed to screw up the impossible...thier cammo. In the end we all agreed that the best place to hide in UCP/ACUs was in formation. And no, it wasn't funny.

Actually the US Army didn't modify/"steal" multicam, they already owned the original scorpion pattern which they contracted Crye to make for them back in 2003, where it was used in those camouflage trials you mentioned, and yes, overall, the "desert brush" pattern beat it. Scorpion W2 (aka OCP), is as far as we know identical in pattern to the original scorpion, whith the only difference probably being slight updates to the color pallete. Otherwise a great video! You didn't exactly take a completely neutral stance on the issue, but we all know how if you even mention how UCP isn't that terrible you will get crucified by a bunch of keyboard warriors Part 1 of Hyperstealth's "U.S. Army Camouflage Improvement Explained" has some great info on this. I would highly suggest anyone interested in camouflage to read all of the parts, 1-6.

Thanks for the feedback I wasn't aware of that! I'll make sure to amend that fact about Cyre and multicam next time I do a video on camouflage. Personally when I wore the UCP in Iraq I never was upset with it. None of us really complained about it because once you covered it in enough dirty it actually worked fine. Also another big point is whenever we rolled outside the wire everyone and their cousin knew we were coming. Stealth wasn't a huge factor for 4 strykers and 40 troops doing a staggered column march down the road.

The first time I saw ACU's I thought they were wearing pajamas. Has anyone considered using a breathable, smock/poncho with reversible camo patterns? A layered version that could be worn over load carrying equipment, that instead of a continuous garment, would have separate panels that would hang open at the bottom and sides so that gear and uniform pockets could be freely accessed. There would also be a vertical slit below the crotch so the legs would not be restricted. It would also do a better job of breaking up the Soldier's outline. There would then be no need to have camo patterned uniforms. Soldiers could look like Soldiers again in starched and ironed olive drab utilities.

IMO (uneducated at that) I'd say that the biggest problem is the "universal" part. Take the pattern and put more green in it for vegetation, brown for desert, and grey for urban it would probably work way better. My 2 cents. The tricky part is getting the greens right, the human visual spectrum is especially tuned for greens. For me in the current version the green is what I notice. It pops out in the desert/ urban environments and is too faded for vegetation.

I was a US Army Signal Corps noncom in the late 1970's. I never figured out why the US Army could never get the basics of common military equipment right. Nor even close to being correct. Don't get me started on the M-16. As my first briefing (standing in ranks) by the Drill Instructor. Was one hour in how the M-16 was going to malfunction in battle. And the M-16 was our primary tool used to keep us alive. Not a good briefing from a DI just back from Vietnam. Because the basic solution of camouflage was to issue a set of uniforms designed to blend into the area in which the soldier is assigned. The Woodland BDU worked reasonably well in Europe and Asia. Only a set of functional desert camo was needed to complete a set. Yet the prime selection category seems to design a battle uniform to make the soldier stand-out in all terrains. So as the officers can keep track of where their soldiers are deployed. While claiming it was designed to hide from equipment the enemy never had. Such as night-vision equipment issued to each enemy soldier.

This wasn't a technological failure. The US Army was well aware that UCP is mediocre in many environments. But while environment specific camo was much better in its environment it often was much worse than UCP in other environments. The original intent was to use UCP as part of a complete logistical system where gray dominant UCP was the default because it was considered to be the least bad choice for operationg in all possible situations. This was to prevent going into battle with a completely wrong camo for the environment which would make you stick out. This happened during Desert Storm, where some went to the desert in woodland camo gear. A universal camo was meant to solve this problem by sending them with still the wrong camo, but less wrong. Then the key point was to then follow up with environment specific uniforms and gear as soon as possible. But, somebody at the budget level decided that the critical step two environment specific gear cost too much and this step one stuff was supposed to be "universal" so why bother? It was a fundamental failure to understand the concept as a system to solve a logistical problem and was then ruined by budget cuts and inertia, shoving just half the system out. UCP would still be a good choice for certain users and environments, such as people primarily in urban areas, on ships, on airfields, in offices, and in docks. Areas where gray dominant works well.

I did not serve in the military, but I have done various wargaming scenarios where you are typically much closer and can truly learn what works and doesn't work as far as camo goes. Compared to the old US Woodland camo, UCP is actually a major step up. With UCP, if you're kneeling down and have a bush in front of you, you won't look the slightest bit out of place. Everyone will just think you're a rock, and you can observe without being seen. With Woodland camo, though, all they're going to see is a big black blob because the average color is too dark and it eats light. Its reflectivity is substantially lower than the natural environment. UCP actually works well if employed correctly; I have literally had people miss me from less than 50 feet away. However, I have yet to see a single scenario where Woodland camo actually works in daytime. Now, if we're talking the old Russian Flora camo, that's another story. That's altogether a much better-designed pattern. UCP had its haters, and I understand why. Multicam and Scorpion OCP are a bit more effective. The takeaway lesson here, though, is you have to know how to actually employ your camo. No camo will disguise a person who's standing in the open. You need partial concealment and you need to position yourself correctly so as to change your outline.
@WardenWolf
@WardenWolf 3 жыл бұрын
@Douglas Pantera I mean, at 500 yards distance, camo can potentially work when you're in the open, but it has to be a very exact match for the terrain. The key thing about camo is that the average color needs to be something that COULD be in the environment. The eye notices contrast first. Woodland is worthless because its average color is basically on par with charcoal; it'd have to be a VERY wet forest for it to be functional, and even then I'd rather be wearing UCP simply because its reflectivity is closer to nature. Even if you match the shade with Woodland, because the reflectivity is off it will only match at a particular time of day; its less-advanced dyes simply don't work well. Meanwhile, UCP, Multicam and Scorpion maintain a light reflectivity that is fairly close to nature at any given time of day, although all three work best when they're a bit dusty. Clean camo is ineffective camo.

At my last duty station, Cuba, the woodland, when you had the lightweight version (and, as a grunt, I dont think anyone EVER wore the heavyweight version outside of Basic), it faded well, and blended extremely well in that environment, which was a brown, rocky, scrub brush, arid environment. I was actually very surprised. New BDUs stuck out like a sore thumb. But, a couple months of washing, sweating, sun baking, and they blended in perfectly. The old woodland pattern was perhaps the best pattern we have had. I recently heard it now referred to as "American Partisan" camo, lol
