Apparently, we actually spent billions of dollars on focus groups and military research at the Pentagon in order to determine the UCP camouflage was a good idea.

There are four features of the ACU that soldiers actually asked for: 1. Shoulder pockets, since after Somalia we were wearing body armor constantly and couldn't really use chest pockets. 2. The mandarin collar, since body armor often rubs against the neck. 3. The sun hat (or "boonie") as the standard headgear, because at the time the Army had gotten rid of patrol caps and was making soldiers wear either the beret, or a helmet. Boonies are actually practical hats for a field environment, so they wear originally issued with ACUs, until a bunch of sergeants major got fed up with soldiers pointing out that AR 670-1 actually allowed them to be comfortable, and got it changed. 4. Velcro fasteners ON THE TORSO ONLY. Those of us who were wearing heavy Ranger Body Armor all day every day asked for that (and some of us modified BDU coats that way) because the buttons on the BDU coat could cause blisters (same reason that we started fastening our dogtags to a belt loop instead of wearing them around our necks). We didn't want Velcro everywhere, just on the parts of the uniform that would be under a heavy plate and couldn't be accessed in the field anyway.

I still don’t get why people on a ship don’t all wear orange, it’s not like naval combat is a bunch of guys shooting at the people on a ship anyways, and mechanics and flight deck personnel wear camo with orange reflective vests over it. What about a uniform where the jacket is orange but can be turned inside out to be a standard land based camo in case of having to go ashore. EVEN IF an antipersonnel attack was committed in a sea vessel for some reason, it would almost certainly rely entirely on IR over anything standard camo would even protect against.

“This is a real thing that we made!” I doubled over laughing so hard I literally almost passed out. So accurate. The Navy rolled out cammies for us shortly after I joined, and just swapped the color pallet to blue so we’d blend in if we fell overboard. XD

Funny thing is that UCP is a really good pattern, its just that the colors are wrong for almost anywhere the Army goes on a regular basis. More than a few youtubers have bought UCP from surplus stores and made videos on dying them. Turns out that UCP with some apple green Rit dye makes a great tropic and semi-tropic pattern. Or take the UCPs, throw them in with some brown Rit dye or even Walnut hull dye and you get this mottled brown that works fantastic in both arid conditions and autumn forests. Leave it in longer for darker brown and that autumn pattern in the woods. Let it soak for less time and the result blends the odd color choices together and brings out the tan colors for desert stuff. If you're wanting some camo for a fall deer hunt in the woods of the east coast or the northern states, grab a nice set of UCP gear, 2lbs of walnut hulls and a big stock pot you can stuff it all in. Put some water in the pot and put it on the heat. Throw in your walnut hulls and let them soak while the water comes up to a boil. Add the rest of your water and bring it up to a boil and mix extremely well. Once you think you've mixed enough, mix some more. Add a few big glugs of white vinegar; the acid helps set the dye. then dunk your camo gear in and let it cook on a low boil/fast simmer for about an hour and then remove to get the light tan color. For the darker brown shades, cook it for 2 hours and then kill the heat. The longer you let the camo sit in the soup, the darker it will get. But if you don't feel like burning a bunch of money on Realtree just so you can get deer blood and mud all over it, dying cheap milsurp clothing is awesome. This also works on ABU if you USAF vets still have any of that kicking around, and it's faded to the point of being useless. Dye it brown and then wonder why they didn't issue that color when you were in Iraq. I want to find a set of US Navy NWU-1 "Blueberries" and see what I can do with that. Maybe bleach first to lighten in, then some green dye and see what kind of woodland color pattern I can come up with. Or bleach it and try brown and see if it becomes a passable desert camo. At the worst, I've wasted a few buck on ugly camo that didn't work anyway unless your goal was to be harder to see should you fall off the boat.

I think the ACU-UCP Digital CAMO, was meant for URBAN-COMBAT, if you notice the UCP-CAMO, works well on pavements/ light building’s & construction sites, pretty much not meant for woodland or desert as much. I still dig it as an Urban- CAMO, I tested it that way and it worked well to me…🤘🏼😎

Funny we tested it urban and it was the best, in arid desert it was far more effective then Scorpion and in tree canopy it was very effective, it failed in low green brush areas, also like to add it looked weird up close but at 400m and beyond it actually was highly effective. Under PVS 14 it was one of the top performers. It seemed to really stick out with dark back grounds and sun in front of it, behind it, it blended ok. Over all conclusion was its ideal for modern urban/NV so so in desert, not good in low woodland

I assume the beret patch in the middle of the forehead was intentionally done to create humor. At least my Marines realized that we'd need at least two color patterns. Perhaps it's because we loved crayons so much we felt just one color wasn't enough?
