Sad to see 2248 make a return, only to be plagued by another problem... I swear that fireman's side cylinder is becoming her "Achilles' Heel". But, I believe that the cylinder head can be fixed... just make a new one and if that one breaks, make multiples, so they can be on hand, just in case!

So the two main causes of this is either Puffy isn't being drained with the cylinder drain cocks whenever she is left sitting for a bit or she is priming. Either way it can be cured with pressure release valves on the cylinder heads or in the newer steam era cocks produced in later years which do both. Sometimes called automatic cylinder cocks. They got lucky if the cylinder casting wasn't cracked as well. Heads are fairly easy to have custom made. Cylinders are harder but CAN be done. Just look at all the rebuilt and new built steam locomotives in the UK!

First time when April 2021 I hear a record whistle from Puffy #2248 least got to ride the Diesel engine.

Well breaking a cylinder head sure is a lot better that breaking the whole cylinder casting.

The color of GVRR #2248 was similar to the colorful Disneyland steam locomotives.

You can't see much with the jacketing on, obviously, but it looks like they may have just busted the front cylinder head. Not fun, but a far easier fix than the rear, or if the wrist pin worked its way out again and ravaged the entire cylinder casting (like the last time). In an ideal world, your easier-to-replace parts are designed to fail before the more difficult do, but these beasts do tend to have minds of their own.

Was there something wrong with Puffy at the end of the video?
@TexasTrainProductions8 жыл бұрын
Yes, something happened causing the main piston to go too far and bust through the cylinder head.
@bmptrainz79804 жыл бұрын
@@TexasTrainProductions I'm pretty sure water got into the cylinder and since water doesn't compress, that's what blew out the cylinder head. You'd have a lot more damage to either a) the cylinder head, since a piston busting through wouldn't just "crack" it, or b) the rest of your running gear because if the cylinder head is *that* strong to just crack if the piston traveled too far then you'll have a whole mess of problems on the other end when the running gear turns into spaghetti...

I agree. The GVRR is a shame really, they ruined poor 2248 and they’re just going downhill from there. Truly sad. I will be taking a trip down south this summer to railfan their diesels

@@blackbirdgaming8147 awesome! Maybe they’ll still be running. They’re still making some money off of their trains from what I’ve seen. Hope you enjoy Texas!

@@RedRiverRailfan Thank you! I think I definitely will enjoy Texas. Totally by accident, my new house in Flower Mound has a view of BNSF tracks, and it’s not hard to get within a safe distance from the track. I just might turn into the crazy neighborhood guy that sets up a beach chair to watch trains on my days off haha.
