I'm picking up my Rottweiler puppy next Sunday. I need a puppy to become a PTSD service dog as my last Rottweiler was. With him I also did obedience and nose work, and just for fun with my second dog being an Australian Cattle Dog, we did also what we call Treibball in German. Treibball is usually for shepherd dog breeds, and as the Rottweiler also used to herd and drive cattle, and my ACD did Treibball as well, I figured it was a good sport for my Rottweiler as well. So now I need a new puppy to train for being my PTSD service dog later on and I again wanted a male because of my former experiences with dogs. I not only had Rottweilers, but also was a breeder of American Bulldogs in Germany. From watching videos of the Rottweiler puppies literally from day 1 to week 9, I picked one of the male puppies, and finally went to see him personally yesterday. And again it was exactly this puppy, which I had picked from the videos, that was convincing. He is good at making contact with me even without me trying to get the puppies' interest by making noises or movements to get their attention. When playing with his siblings, he engaged pretty good, didn't care if they took something and reacted by getting himself something else to play with. Similar to me when I was a kid. LOL When a dried rabbit ear another sibling was playing with fell between two raised boards, he was the only one trying to get to it and worked concentrated by himself to get it. As soon as he had it, he was leaping with joy and showed off the rabbit ear to the others. The other puppies tried to steal it and he was good at running away with it until he lost interest and let them have it. He wasn't resource guarding it, just presenting it like a trophy for a while. Later he also climbed a metal fence to get to the other side, which he achieved by working concentrated on his goal. The fence was a little higher than my knee. I was watching the interactions closely for a few hours. My puppy showed multiple times that he was a chilled little chap, who liked to figure things out and work concentrated on achieving his current goal. I don't really care for bite drive, I care more for motivation to work and staying focused on solving a problem. My puppy also reacted submissive when turned on the back, let me check his teeth, ears, tail and testicles without any negative reactions. He was easily motivated by any kind of object I showed him. And he reacted with interest when I did or showed something that was new to him. For example, I dropped my keys into a small metal bucket. He first startled due to the sudden noise, but then investigated thoroughly with interest and cautious but conscious care, while one of the others stayed away completely, and three of the others jumped on the object blindly without any cautiousness. So my puppy definitely is more of a thinker before acting or reacting, which is what I want. When the puppies were given food, some of them jumped directly into the bowl and even growled at their siblings, but my puppy only ran to the food bowl, then looked around to spot a place his siblings had missed, and then went there immediately to eat. When two of his siblings tried to push him away and tried to bite in his tale, he didn't engage in a fight, but simply placed his paws so he would be steadfast. He only growled at the sibling biting his tail and then went on with eating. So he obviously is not a dog, that fights without real cause, but stands his ground. What a tough and intelligent little guy, I thought. The breeder wanted to sleep a night before making a decision and called me today to tell me that I could have this puppy. So now I'm getting ready to welcome my new baby and therefore I'm watching Nate's puppy videos like this one here, which again convinced me that I made the right choice. I can't wait to start my baby boy's training. Since my last service dog died on April 29th only about half a year ago, I haven't had a true reason to go on with my life. A dog means so much more to me than to average people, because he is my companion, my comrade, my partner, my friend, and most importantly, he is my contact to sanity, health, and life itself. When I work or train with my dog every day, I am not attached to gruesome thoughts spiraling in my mind. I lost the rest of my life together with a part of my heart when my service dog LODUR died. 😥😢😭 I still love him so much, but I'm now ready to move on since I had a dream of Lodur placing a Rottweiler puppy in my lap. ❤️‍🩹

I really appreciate this video. Not many out there show how to pick a puppy from a litter (which most of this video tackles). It feels though as the last 2 minutes is what tackles on essentials of picking any puppy VS a puppy from a litter. Thanks for the content! And I appreciate your training approach.

@@NateSchoemer Hello Nate will it be too much to ask if you could do a puppy training series? Like from 8 weeks old to 6 months and utilities the 4 quadrant of operant conditioning in teaching the puppy crate training, potty training, house braking, leash walking , obedience training, tug of War, fetch and so on and so forth. Could not go out of your way to do a series like maccan dog training and Zak George puppy traing but with your style please. That will make life easy for a novice like me.

This is absolutely awesome information for ANYbody who will be picking a puppy at any time in the future. I already shared it with my FB network and encouraged them to share also - this is the kind of information which could help almost all people and puppies get off to a much healthier start together.

I have a 3 year old gsd Czech/ east working line gd genetic from gd breeder I got him with 10 weeks and the dog has been as I wanted, excellent nerves, clear head, excellent hunt, amazing protection work, hight prey and defense drive. I have struggled with the focus and engagement outside since the beginning I think this dog was independent as a puppy I couldn’t see his brothers the dog was from another state.
