Drunk flying, if it doesn't kill you, will result in a permanent loss of your pilots license. Pilot's lic are easy to lose, at least in the States and other developed nations. Just this year a KZbinr faced an engine malfunction and crashed an aircraft. The FAA found out finded him and took his license. He was lucky to not get prison time as well.

So a few real world touch stones. Depending on the age of a structure like a tunnel, school, government building like a post office or courthouse it's service tunnels and basements might be nuclear attack shelters. They were made in the 50's and 60's with reinforced concrete. Now to save you some grief. The US has a number of different branches of the military. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force. They have good natured rivalries with each other. The reason they don't like to be miss identified. Will Smith's character is in the US Marine Corps. Actual Marines are pretty touchy about being miss labeled. ( I know a few of them) A friend of mine used to sleeper hold people unconscious when they would say she wasn't a US Marine. She was an aircraft mechanic on the same jet Will Smith's character flew. An F/A 18 super hornet.

I saw this in the theater in '96 when I was 6 years old! I still can remember how absolutely mind blowing and terrifying the cities destruction scenes were. This film looks so much more epic and (special effects / miniature work) looks completely seamless on the big screen. I'm so glad this film still holds up exquisitely to this day! The special effects are definitely still as effective as ever, and the score is great too! My favorite parts of the score are when Mr. President: Bill Pullman, recites one of the most inspiring speeches ever. Another favorite flair of the score I love is when the pilot father: 'Russell Casse' is trying to fire the last missile and the firing system malfunctions, just pulls me right to the edge of my seat! This film had/ still has it all and is what going to the movies is all about. Just pure, suspend your disbelief, thrilling entertainment. 😊

Indepedence Day is pure 90's campfest. It's a lot of fun. Though I have to add that the biggest plot hole, how Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum characters were able to infect with a virus an alien spaceship with just a Mac (which was laughed at even at the time), there is a deleted scene which shows Goldblum working on the spaceship that crashed in Area 51 and understanding that the code they used was the same than the message he intercepted on a satellite at the beginning of the film and since all alien ships were somehow connected, that's how it worked. It doesn't explain everything, but hey, the movie has not been made to quench our intellectual curiosity, it was made to be a crowd pleaser and it certainly was. The virus device was used in the past, nowhere else than in the 1898 novel The War of the Worlds where aliens, after beating the crap out of humanity and killing millions, are defeated by a virus that their immune system can't fight. But Independence Day is just an all around a blast to watch.

I admit I laughed out loud at the "uploading virus" scene 😆

I think there was supposed to have been a scene that helped explain it. That a lot of our modern inventions and computers were made from reverse enginering the alien craft so that it's basically built on their technology hence the reason an earth computer could link up to the alien one.

The 90's were a great decade for disaster movies such as Dante"s Peak, Volcano, Armageddon, Daylight, Titanic and off course Independence Day which was the summer movie in 1996 and even now it's still a great summer movie but it can be enjoyed in any time of year even during the Christmas season. Also if you like disaster movies then you may want to check out if you haven't already seen them The Day The Earth Stood Still, War Of The Worlds (Both the old one and the one with Tom Cruise are good), The Day after in 1983, The Day after Tomorrow, 2012, The Poseidon Adventure (The original with Gene Hackman I thought was the best in the 70's) and The Towering Inferno with Paul Newman and Steve Mcqueen also in the 70's. There's no hurry because I know that's a lot of them so take your time. Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids and I hope you feel better.

Ah memories. My wife loved this movie. I love to make fun of it. Cigarette smoking man is Harvey Fierstein. He's probably better known as a playwright and screenwriter, but he's definitely fun when he shows up to act. He's in Mrs. Doubtfire if you like Robin Williams movies.

I would also suggest Death To Smoochy (also with Robin Williams, directed by Danny DeVito), and Dr Jekyll And Ms Hyde for some more of Harvey on screen.

9:28 "I would be _freaking out_ even if there _was_ a 4-point-something earthquake." Yeah. It would probably unsettle me a bit, too. I've actually never _been_ in an earthquake. These folks, though, live in Irvine, California. It's very close to the San Andreas Fault. Lower-magnitude earthquakes are so common, there, that buildings are typically built to withstand them. They're a regular part of life.
@ShreeNation

My state in India is earthquake prone too. A 4 magnitude definitely warrants getting up, 5 makes me want to go outside and a 6 mag makes me want to pray to God.

I saw this in the theater when it first came out with a friend of mine, who came from Russia; he almost fell out of his seat when he heard the two pilots speaking in Russian! In a clever bit of anticipation-building, I remember that the toy store nearby had a bunch of Independence Day-themed toys for sale for several weeks before the film came out, so everybody my age was dying to see the film when it finally started playing.

2:18 "That does not look... earthly." Yeah. And it's so curious that they approached us by passing our _moon._ I mean, next time you're outdoors and the Moon is in the sky, consider just how _little_ of the sky it takes up. It is, in fact, _so_ far away that you can close one eye, extend your thumb to arm's length, and _block_ it, _completely_ from the _other_ eye. So why did they feel the need to sneak _up_ on us? Were they afraid that, if we saw them coming, we would run _away?_

14:27 "I really don't think they flew _90 billion light years_ to come down here and start a fight." I mean, in all honesty, it _would_ be extraordinarily improbable. Whatever resources they would be able to plunder from Earth would have to have been used up many times _over_ just _coming_ here. It would be like driving across five counties just to drop in on a local _restaurant_ that also has a branch in the city you're _from._ A time-wasting exercise in _fruitlessness._

I am only part way through your reaction (have Part 2 queued in Watch Later), but if you ultimately enjoyed Independence Day and would enjoy watching a completely accidental and thoroughly coincidental parody of it that was released earlier in 1996, check out Mars Attacks! (that exclamation point should give you Airplane! feels) directed by Tim Burton and featuring probably one of the most decorated casts in cinematic history. Or perhaps you have seen Mars Attacks! already. But just in case...

The 2004 Presidential Election, in the US, was between incumbent George W. Bush and John Kerry. Dubya won. In the wake of it, though, a single-seat civilian aircraft violated the White House's airspace. He came within _three miles_ of it and the President and Vice President were evacuated. At the time, Jay Leno was still host of _The Tonight Show._ He brought up this incident on his show and joked, "Wow. _Three miles._ John _Kerry_ didn't come that close." But, anyhow, am I _really_ supposed to believe that a _huge_ vessel from an intelligence you have _yet_ to make contact with, would warrant _different_ treatment?
