The drive sprockets are pressed on. It will take maybe a 30 ton special hydraulic press to remove and install them. There is a bellows type seal behind the sprocket as well. You will have to do process 4 times to transfer the sprockets . Lots of hard work. I would just cut the sprockets off your donor machine, like they were cut from the machine you are rebuilding. It is a common way of replacing the track sprockets. Find a common location to measure on the donor machine before you cut the sprockets off that you can use to set the side position on the new machine. Tack the sprockets in several locations checking run out. Then weld with 7018 Low Hydrogen welding rods. Alternate your welds as you would tighten a car rim. They don't have to be perfect just close. The more time you take in setting them the easier it will be on yourself. Did this on our D4D a few years back when we installed new sprocket rims with new rails. Warm your track link and freeze your track pin and be quick about it when you drive your track pin back in to connect rails.

Start soaking the tracks in old motor oil, and work them loose. I would change the springs now if any are broken (way easier than when it is together. Just take the spring and associated bolt and nut to Cat dealer to put them together for like 90 bucks. Springs are way too dangerous to try to do without proper equipment.

The chains are really not stuck too bad. They turned when we had them on the other machine. As long as we can get them on the machine, they'll free up when we drive it. We don't want to soak in oil because we're worried that will give us a grinding paste once dirt gets in it that will wear the undercarriage faster. We do plan on parking it in the creek for a couple days once it's together to help make sure all the links free up all the way.

While you have the track frames off. Flip them over and bust the roller bolts loose. Check them and reintall with thick thick grease. Schaffer 237 or 238 i forget the number. That will save you days of work in the future if you ever need to chang the rollers. You are going to need to get creative when pulling the sprockets. Since the sprocket is cut off. You may need 6 semicircular plates to pinch the spokes inside and out to use the 3 leg puller so you dont bend the spokes causing them to snap. Or have two semicrcular plates cut. And use square plates to pinch against the puller side of the spoke. Did you see western tractor on youtube weld new sprockets on several D4D fumigation versions.

yeah I've seen western tractor. He's got some good info on repairing this old iron

Well you had the tracks under it.all you had to do was pull the tracks over the sprocket and top roller pull it over the idler and put a bolt or piece of pipe in track joints to keep them together and push the tractor off trailer this would have worked even though one sprocket was just spockes
@John_Graff11 ай бұрын
We couldn't get the tracks to bend enough to actually hook the ends together
@Russ484411 ай бұрын
@@John_Graff pouring a mixture of diesel fuel and drain oil in the joints as the track is spread out and hitting the ends of the track pins usually can loosen track links

I have never seen such sketchy and dangerous stuff in my life. If that cable had snapped it would have decapitated the guy under that dozer WTF.

♪♫♩ Shake Hands With Danger ♪♫♩. But seriously, we were nowhere near that cable's working load limit.

How in the hell did you guys find pretty much exactly what you needed in such a short amount of time...another D4D with no tracks on it? I can hardly find any older dozers for sale around me, let alone something so specific.
@John_Graff11 ай бұрын
Seems like it took less time than it really did because some of the footage is a little old but we just got lucky I guess
