Ever wondered about the inserts on a digital mixer, ever seen someone else using de-essers, dynamic EQ or 1176 compressors and wondered how you connect them on your mix?
Insert points are one of the most powerful features of a mixer but are often ignored or underused. There’s nothing particularly complex or scary about them and there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be using them on your mixes.

On an analog mixer ProFx12v3+, Whats the point of inserts if there are already built in fx send? As well as aux effects loop? Wont the aux be used purely as another output monitor?

Great question. On analogue mixers I used inserts exclusively for dynamics, so gates and compressors.

Nice explanations! I would like to setup home karaoke. Karaoke plays from KZbin TV, connect to the mixer. I have a 8 channel mixer. I would like to use 2 mics on ch1 & ch2 Inserts. On these channels only I would like to use reverb effects and compressor-not affecting the whole mixer. How is the best way to setup.

Thanks. Connect the into a channel 3+4 on the mixer. Connect mics to channels 1 and 2. Connect compressor to insert points on channels 1 and 2. Connect reverb processor to aux out 1. Connect return from reverb to channels 5 and 6. Use send to aux 1 on channels 1 and 2 to add reverb. Turn on insert to engage compressor.

what's your opinion of outboard crossover like a driverack vs the matrix output crossover filters ???

I would go for an outboard crossover, it's more likely to have more control in terms of filter shapes etc. Any modern processor is also pretty likely to have preset files with crossover and other settings recommended by the manufacturer. I've used on board EQ before to demonstrate it and it will work but it's mostly to prove a point.

@@OffshoreAudio the matrix outs certainly have the exact filters my speakers call for that I use in my outboard. but that said ??? I don't want to agree with you because I don't want to buy any more gear or carry it because that means I need a new rack space

I mean it's diminishing returns right? If you have a setup that works then that's great. You're sending appropriate frequency content to each speaker. My answer was based on what is better objectively but a drive rack is unlikely to make or break an event.

Hey! Not sure I understand what you mean? I show the connections at around 08:45 to 10:00 in this video. Is it sending to effects using a bus that you're interested in as opposed to insert points? because I can make a video covering that in detail if you'd like.
