This video is exactly what i’m looking for. I’ve worked with my company for 6 years and became office manager recently. I’m 25 and of course this is all new to me but, i’m willing to learn. This is exactly what I needed, thank you!!

Totally agree with getting the balance of hands on vs hands off. That's hard. No-one likes a micromanager, but we still need to give people autonomy. I set the expectations at the start at the year and let everyone know exactly what I'm looking for. Then it's over to them to deliver it. People like the trust and responsibility, but depending on the person, may need some additional help. Keep coming with the great advice Mike. New manager assistance is a big one.

Ya. I always find it works for me to set the standard up front. Then there is minimal confusion about expectations

That last point is super important. And so many companies don't provide any training for people graduating from SME to manager.

Great insights! I think Small Business can put employees and managers in situations that are uniquely challenging. For new staff responsibilities can be either more diverse / less clear compared to other jobs with large companies. I find that there's an "intimidation factor". New employees see how much their employers need and sort of get chased off. It's a unique problem that comes with the exposure of being an early business.

About hiring the wrong person... what would you recommend when there is a massive labor shortage across the country and your company has half the employees needed to operate
@LeadershipwithMike3 жыл бұрын
What are you offering that makes people want to get out of bed and work for you? If it’s entry level pay, long days and hard work… it doesn’t sound too enticing lol You don’t necessarily need to pay a boat load of money… but you do need to create a workplace that people want to go to. A restaurant chain I worked at long ago is having 0 issues getting people to work.. this is because they’ve been a great employer for ever so people want to work there. This is how the labor shortage will be won!

Very solid advice Mike. More people need to hear your tips. Your tip about hiring the wrong person especially resonated with me. Had an employee once that we definitely should not have hired and kept him for too long where it would have been too expensive to get rid of him. Guess you've got to make mistakes to learn from them....

Dear Mike: I am a soon to be college graduate. Do you have any suggestions on how I could land a management position without real experience? I know experience is the best form of knowledge, but there has to be something. Thanks, Jed
