To the person who asked about painting loose but accurate, Richard Schmid has a great quote in Alla Prima about this very thing. I think people confuse painting loose with painting fast. I recall reading an account of someone who was watching Sargent paint. He essentially exclaimed “His brush hung in the air, poised, for what seemed like an eternity.” Meaning he was very deliberate and careful about each and every stroke he laid down and consequently didn’t fuss with it. He took the time to be thoughtfully accurate and as a result it gave an appearance of looseness.

i am a gouache artist ( also watercolorist), and actually find that so many of your tips and advice apply to gouache as well .. especially using a " light hand" when working .. with oils it's so that colors don't get muddied up .. with gouache it's so as to not reactivate the previous layer ( unless it's an effect you're going for).. thanks as always, chelsea.. love your hair , by the way !! Norakag , here 👍👍
