The Gen 2 videos are always the most surprising ones to me. Sometimes they're expectedly difficult like the Pichu video, but other times Pokemon I would expect to really struggle or be impossible end up being weirdly good like Togepi and Unown.
@darthparallax520711 ай бұрын
Togepi being good makes sense because it's like Magikarp: You get Gyarados and Gyarados is good, And like Eevee and the Fossils: usually when the game makes it easier to get a Pokémon that Pokémon gets the advantage of often being an early acquire that gets to level up a ton as just the beginning of benefits in addition to being available for any thing related to opportunities at earlier points in runs and they're often designed to fill holes in a team at the time you acquire them. Eevee is your 2nd Starter Pokémon type bouquet to guarantee a balance of typing on defense and Celadon Dept. has TMs and Items to round it out on offense. 50% shot of a good Fossil at Mt. Moon (Omastar works better than Kabutops) So with Gyarados Omastar a Starter and an Eevee just given to you for free in runs you get a lot of versatility even before legendaries. Togepi is exactly analogous to Magikarp in that it's very rewarding to invest time in and exists specifically to teach the fundamental game mechanics of level up and evolving with an example of a weak Mon that improves with growth a lot instead of starting out swinging hard like a Ghost or Psychic type. The final payoff for this in RBY is that Dratini is really not a great Pokémon but you know from understanding the game mechanics that the rare little dragon from a Safari Pond should turn into something really good. And it does. Sudowoodo Snorlax and Red Gyarados are more free encounters too. I think it ends up being the case that Kabuto is low key the worst Pokémon distributed like this but it proves the rule that received Pokémon are almost always good. Also I think Whitney was designed to be a hint that Togepi should be given Rollout in a loosely anime inspired run. (3 Johto starters + Togepi + Pikachu + something good)
@hi-i-am-atan11 ай бұрын
@@darthparallax5207 togetic is not anywhere near as much of a payoff as gyarados, and is also wholly irrelevant because ricky's talking about the *_togepi_* run, not some theoretical togetic run starting with togepi i'm honestly not even sure if you're in the right universe right now. this is the universe where the starter trio is grass-fire-water and psychic and ghost types don't tend to be accessible until you've already started to establish a team. and even then, the first psychic types we tend to see in a game are shit like abra and ralts, which demonstrate the magikarp principle _infinitely_ better than togepi does. like, abra can't even attack until it evolves. there are many ways to describe teleport, but "starting out swinging hard" is not one that comes to mind

New Head Canon, Blue beat the Elite 4 and Champion Lance, bumping the lowest ranked Elite 4 off the team, knocking the other three down a rank, and knocking Lance from Champion to Elite 4 just in time for Red to face Lorelei... And Creepypasta... Agatha didn't retire or die during the timeskip between RGBY and gSC... She used her mastery over Ghosts to possess a younger body and took over her victim's Identity... At least one of Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur will resist just about any other type you would want to use, and Snorlax will ruin your day regardless. Maybe a physical type like rock to bypass Snorlax's SpDef? We still have the problem of no STAB though, which feels bad.

@@CptGallantit might have taken a few more tries, but certainly would happen.

Jrose i love putting on your videos for background listening. this might sound bad, but i even like to put them on when i want to take a nap. BUT! you're not boring! you just make nice chill videos that i know i'll enjoy either by watching the ride or by taking a little nap, lol

You should try a Delibird run 😂 present is such an awful move.

I think Ice type Hidden Power would have been pretty good too for the sheer amount of types you hit. Then again you'd probably have to shoot for max power because you're not getting STAB..

considering Unown is in the little animation that plays if you stay idle on the title screen for too long with Suicune, you'd think they'd be more, important

Unown was always one of my favorite pokemon ever since I saw the 3rd movie back in the early 2000's. Im happy to see you doing a challenge using it!

Rock is technically the best offensive hidden power, at least in a vacuum, as nothing is immune to it and it has the least types that resist it VS the ones that are weak to it

Really think dragon would have been the best type. Only loses to 6th gym, then goes neutral or supereffective against everything else including supereffective against Lance!

I did a run where I just caught 3 Unknowns at the Ruins and rolled with it... just 3 Unknowns for the rest of the game... it was super fun figuring out their typing based on performace in battles...

Prediction before watching fully... HP psychic is going to come back to bite you in the E4 and rival fights. You're going to be forced to use struggle against sneasle, which may be doable. But Karen leads with Umbreon and that's just going to wall you, plus vileplume has moonlight to heal. along with the plethora of Dark type attacks on her team to hit you super effectively. Probably should have went with something like HP Dragon. Neutral hits throughout the game and super effective hits for Lance and Clair

Got pretty close but managed to win in the end at lv 97. Still would be interested to see how dragon would go.

I'm pretty sure you called Karen Agatha on purpose there. And yeah the Dark-type immunity was unfortunate, but tbh I'm not sure you'd have been able to beat Red without STAB, seeing as you were already at lv97 Either way, happy holidays!

I really hope you see this. That Crystal Legacy Edition you showed. My Ariados steamrolled the Elite 4. It got Psychic at 32 I think. You talked about doing a run in the game and I'd vote for Ariados.

24:17 thing is, even as early as Gen II you can equip a Shuckle with a berry and after enough steps in the over world the Shuckle will turn it into a rare candy.

Hey Jrose, love your content, watch your videos all the time. FYI, you should get a pop filter for your microphone, and also (if you have an EQ you use) lower the bass frequencies (everything below about 80 Hz). Your "p" sounds hit the mic really hard and it's obvious in this video, especially in the first couple minutes. Keep putting out awesome stuff!

With HP Dragon you have only 1 resistence and no immunities in this gen, I believe this is the best HP for that run

As an Gen 2 and Unown enthusiast, I gotta say this video is a work of art. My most precious Unown are the shiny I and V, and the X with the best DVs for Hidden Power Psychic, which I fully trained to Lv 100 and gave 3 PP Ups and the Twisted Spoon.

This one seems to be running even faster than usual, like the text and walking animation. Not the playthrough, the playthrough seems to be long enough for how comparatively easy it sounds to be playing out. 😄👍

I've been saying, Unown is an underrated pick. I've used it myself, albeit not in a solo run. Hold out for a good Hidden Power, choose its battles carefully, it gets stuff _done!_
@CertavusGrey545011 ай бұрын
Bit unfortunate that only Unown(currently) got hidden power. Was neat that they were brought back for BDSP, even if it was ONLY for BDSP. Thought I suppose you could argue that terra somewhat fills that role(least temporarily for one mon).
@jbz478811 ай бұрын
They did have them in legends Arceus and hidden power was made pretty decent in that game (Iirc it was always a super effective type on whatever it targeted)

ANOTHER impossible run? You've been spoiling us! Love the vids!
@verymelonman1211 ай бұрын
You really should have gone with an Ice or Rock type Hidden Power instead for super effective and neutral coverage against most of the bosses. Psychic STAB isn't valuable when it causes you to resort to Struggle against Karen.

I had no idea it was possible to beat the whole game including Red with only one Unown! You did it with 1 Unown, and you beat Red at level 97! That STAB on Hidden Power Psychic made the difference for sure! Congratulations!
@BioniclesaurKing4t211 ай бұрын
Here's a somewhat cruel challenge run idea: Unown with Hidden Power Ghost. All those Normal Types in the early game, nearly every trainer, even grinding against most wild Pokémon to prepare for the trainers, all with relying only on Struggle with so little HP to spare and no Rare Candies to speak of. And then after the opening brutal slog, it'll suddenly become trivial until those random no-name trainers who decided to still use a weak Normal type randomly in the middle of their team that your entire strategy now has to bow down to.
