This story hits too close to home for me literally. I'm from new orleans and I ended up becoming friends with that woman's ex roommate a couple years after. None of them in the house had any idea this was going on obviously and he was freaked out asf when he noticed seemingly random police surveillance and then finally the house got swatted. Its very shameful to do this kind of thing to the dead. Anyone who practices voodoo knows you respect the dead and this kind of violation is beyond disgraceful & asking to be haunted by malevolent spirits.

I for one think it’s WILD that she claimed to be indigenous/POC to try and rationalize what she’s doing (No indigenous or voodoo practice would EVER include the use of human bones without the person’s consent). But she couldn’t even spell the word “indigenous” and then it turns out she’s white. I hope this person eventually found some kind of treatment or help for whatever they clearly had going on.

@@InsertUsernameHere-co1uv Me too!! She kept saying "indigenous," but it wasn't specific. I kept asking myself, "What exactly community are you referring to?" There are thousands of indigenous religions, and many of them don't involve the use of human bones. So, I feel it's inadequate to generalize like that. Just say what religions you practice. But, of course, she is white, knows little to nothing about this, and was just trying to clean her name. I was so mad!!

@@0livE3S exactly!! Like there are indigenous ppl from 6/7 of the continents on this earth, the way she just assumes that 1) American Indigenous people are somehow the only indigenous people and that 2) All American Indigenous practices are the same and would be totally fine with her using random unconsenting people's bones is... quite wild to me

With regards to the concrete question: these kind of above ground graves often belong to poor or impoverished families who do not have the funds to fully entomb them. This woman was stealing the bones of poor people who are quite possibly black due to our nation's history of marginalizing the African American community and keeping them in poverty via systemic racism. I cannot speak to the viability of laying concrete over the graves, but even if such a thing were a viable solution, there might not be funding to do so.
@lisahoshowsky4251
@lisahoshowsky4251 8 ай бұрын
Probably not the funds to do it. Most modern below ground graves also have concrete crypts, it’s rarely raw soil unless it’s a natural burial which is just becoming legal. It’s why people can be exhumed years later in crime investigations and their caskets are still in one piece and in relatively good shape, it wasn’t surrounded by soil there’s a concrete grave liner and concrete cap under the soil.
@heyitskaydee9199
@heyitskaydee9199 8 ай бұрын
Funeral director here. You can’t cover the whole graveyard in concrete because the ground will shift and move under it, especially in a place like New Orleans because of the “bowl” effect which causes more water in the ground. Any flooding of the ground will cause shifting under the concrete and make the concrete crack or break.

So I'm Brazilian and over here there are some ancient indigenous cemeteries where people were buried right in the earth. Yes there are literally human bones scattered around them. They're usually in the middle of the woods. Animals dig them up and you do have to like, step over someone's tibia when visiting these places. Also a lot of people perform spells in them but I don't think anyone takes the bones because it's REALLY bad juju. You can usually just find offerings and such.

Same here. The idea of using human bones or other body parts in religious practice (or to make art) is a little out there but I think still above board as long as they’ve been given with (informed!) consent (I say informed bc there was another recent scandal of someone using old medically donated bones to make art pieces; those people consented to their bones being used for SCIENCE, right, not for art, so I think it was still questionable for the artist to use them. Do we have to start telling people who donate their bodies “hey, just so you know, we might sell your bones eventually and they could end up on some instagram dollmaker’s account covered in rhinestones”? Bc that’s. wild)

THIS. This was always the sticking point for me. They never said where or what culture the practices belonged to, and in fact a couple actual Indigenous practictioners who used bones came out and said "thats not how ANY of this works, you don't fcking steal random strangers remains". So i highkey think they were either faking culture, or maybe had the ancestry but were very far removed and did not do any actual research into it at all.

I live in New Orleans! Some graves are covered with concrete instead of a whole crypt, but like OP said so people can't even afford that. Dying is expensive.

I feel like practicing indigenous magic and then selling that indigenous magic (even giving the ability to practice it since she didn’t profit off it) to non indigenous folk might negate the whole argument of you can’t call me out because it’s indigenous.

If you covered the ground in concrete there’s no where for the water to drain and you just created a swimming pool full of dead bodies

Strange Aeons made an extremely in-depth video on the hivliving scandal you mentioned (and lots and lots of other legends-- her channel is essentially dedicated to deep dives into tumblr history). While I like the direction your channel is taking and I think you should pursue what you want to talk about, you should be aware there's a popular channel that already covered many tumblr stories in excruciating detail with receipts and even interviews with the tumblr users involved.

I had to pass on watching that video because I was good friends with hivliving IRL before she was exposed for her secret & very deranged internet life. Took 2 years of therapy before I was able to talk about it without getting angry 😭😭

@@jazzycat8917 I thought that for a long time but eventually Ursula (the one who uncovered this mess and helped make the video exposing it) sent me receipts showing hivliving had made that alter ego before we even met. It’s just an extremely weird coincidence that gave me the ick!! hivliving did claim to be half lebanese in real life (I’m 100% lebanese) and when me and mutual friends compared stories we realized that she (going off pronouns she used IRL) couldn’t get her lineage straight. She did ingratiate herself in BIPOC communities which is how I imagine she was able to pull off her scheme for as long as she did
Ouch.. 🤕
