We don’t have a policy regarding teachers using our phones. I tell my students that I have a kid in college, one in hs, and a mother who had a stroke. I may have to answer a text, phone call, or answer an email from Admin.

I'm an adult who has been to college and knows how to pay attention to a powerpoint. PLEASE stop treating me like a child: I do not need 5 turn-and-talks and graphic organizers to remember how to reserve the library. Stop "modelling good lesson plans" and just respect my time!

I somewhat agree with both sides. I use the arguement of "you pay for it you can have it (unless the place has rules against it)". But high schoolers can have starbucks if they're paying for it since most have their own jobs and go to college half of the day.

I see this as an opportunity for modeling. Not everyone is a veteran teacher. Also there is a large problem in the system where people assume that teachers know the best practices. Just like teachers, admin is often times throwing a wide net to try and cover as many gaps as possible. It also sometimes is solely for accountability. You were at the PD. You received the information. This means sometime as a veteran teacher you have to sit through a PD you may not need just like our high achieving students. I always tell myself to try and find something new in the PD so that it feels my time was worth it. ☺️

@@caroljones9229 Reaching out a helping hand to new teachers and getting them extra training or even just showing up in their classroom to help would be more effective if you actually wanted to help the new teachers. Veteran teachers need admin to respect their time, and it's not treating veterans like professionals if they are forced to learn basic techniques every time they show up to an information meeting. It implies that admin think the veteran teachers are incompetent, which is demoralizing! The time saved by not wasting veteran teachers time could be used by the admin to actually HELP the new teachers.

I completely felt this episode. I also am not a morning person, but if I am not 10-15 minutes early to work, my anxiety cannot. I am a much better, more cheerful educator when I have at least a few minutes to set up every day. Also why I fall asleep earlier on the weekdays, but I'll take it over the constant anixety attacks I've had in recent times. Seeing the results of that last school year has helped me manage getting up earlier to be early to school. But that's what works for me, everyone needs something different, or has different situations. I also don't have children so that helps. Gabe, I had the SAME thought when I heard "do as I say, not as I do". It is BS. You learn from watching not from only words. Also, I did think of Captain America with you too, so that checks out. PLEASE do the overstimmulated one. It's SO true. I've never been so overstimmulated in my LIFE. And I worked in retail in college.

I go to an all-girls private high school in Australia, and we are not allowed to have our phones on us during the day. For grades 7-9, they have to sign it in and give it to the office, but in grades 10-12, we have to put it in our lockers, like we are not allowed to bring them in class

I am a school lunch lady. I have also worked elsewhere to get by. I can tell you that if you walk into work at anytime after the time you are scheduled to be there you are considered late. If you do not give notice that you will be late there is no excuse for being late. Personal experience is included in this.

Before mobile phones hit the classroom and caused so many problems for pupils and teachers alike, teachers depended on the office phone for the staff and students to call their parents. It wasn't always about needing a ride home. It was about misbehaving or a bad grade on an exam that the phone was used. No student wanted to use that phone to call home and have the teacher pick it up and talk to the parent in front of the student.

I follow my Irish grandma’s wisdom regarding gossip. If you hear something negative, “Take it with you to your grave. Let it die with you.” I also don’t allow kids to talk down another teacher, even if I agree with their assessment. If what they say is a well known fact, I instruct them how best to respond. Gossip is not it.

Circling back to don’t let students bad talk about your co-workers. Storytime: I’m sorry it’s so long. I will never forget it because I HATED one of our APs. Back in 2016, I was a senior in HS, an A/B student, never got in trouble, stayed pretty quiet, always got my work done, and overall trustworthy kid. One day I stayed after school with a teacher for extra help and when we finished I waited inside near the front for my mom to pick me up. Unfortunately, there were other kids also staying after except they were walking the halls, yelling, just acting a fool. The janitor had enough of them so she made everyone who was inside go stand outside to wait. I pulled her aside to talk with her to ask if I could please stay in the middle section (2 doors separating the outside from the inside) to wait because I had a UTI at the time and needed to use the restroom frequently; also I was very uncomfortable standing outside alone in the dark. She said it was fine, I thanked her, and she told me where to sit so I stayed there. Well around back those same disruptive kids got back inside and again walked the halls, yelling, etc. The janitor once again kicked them out only this time found the assistant principal, Ms. Sanderson to also back her up. As I was walking out of the restroom back to my corner the janitor said I was part of the problem because I was inside the building after she told everyone else to get out. I tried explaining to her I was coming out of the restroom and that we had already talked about this, but she was insistent that I was lying or she completely forgot about our entire conversation. Ms. Sanderson didn’t believe me at all, so she asked for me to give her my name to write me up for a punishment I didn’t even commit. Now here is where I will own up and take accountability, I refused to give her my name. I let the heat of the moment take over and pulled the “I’m 18 it’s after school hours and I’m just waiting on my mom to pick me up so legally I don’t need to tell you anything. I have the right to remain silent.” (Yes I know what 18 doesn’t have a car, but I also had seizures so I couldn’t drive also I shouldn’t have said that. ) To which Ms. Sanderson threatened to call the police to have me trespassed. Then she told me to call my mom to see how far out she was, so I tried to explain the situation to my mom, then Ms. Sanderson tried to interrupt me by speaking over me, tried yelling into my phone (I had it up to my ear) walking into my personal space and yelling into my face. I backed up multiple times, put my hand up in front of me, and asked her multiple times to back up. She never does just keeps coming forward onto me. It became a yelling battle between the two of us. I asked her to back up and she advanced trying to yell into my phone. Finally, I had enough and after her threatening to call the police I just started walking off. I walked off campus, a few miles down the road, called a friend to get me out of there, and I left. I let that entire situation consume me to the point that I “ran away” and didn’t tell anyone where I was for 3 days. After getting a clear head and a lot of convincing to go back to school, I still had to have a chat with the AP, I was still punished with 2 days of ISS, and when I returned to class, I had every single teacher ask me what happened because they were so shocked that I would ever get ISS. Told them the story and they all had a shocked look, except 1 teacher who was also my safety / favorite teacher who gave me “the look” of I believe you and I know she’s on a power trip, I’ve seen it too. Because she let me vent and she was able to relate to me we connected even more. I never bad-mouthed Ms. Sanderson except that 1 time explaining my story, and to this day I‘ve lost all respect for her. However, I do still text my favorite teacher and I still love her to this day.

My former administration had a rule that a written note from a parent was an excused tardy, no matter what the reason written on it. (Non-public school). This led to a series of excused tardies for a student due to “he overslept”. I told him one time that I really wished I could use that as excuse for myself because I did not always want to wake up when the alarm went off.
