"Joe" is American slang for coffee. It could be a shortened version of "jamoke" (a word combination of java + mocha), a reference to the common man's drink, a reference to the G. Washington Coffee Refining Company that provided coffee to American GIs in WWI "cup of George" which became "cup of Geo (or Joe)," or maybe a reference to US Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels who abolished alcohol on naval vessels and made coffee the strongest drink to be served at sea.

The reason the hobo on the roof asks the boy if he believes in ghosts is because the hobo *is* a ghost. There’s actually a deleted scene that confirms this. Basically, the engineer and the fireman asks the boy if the conductor brought him into the engine. The boy says the “the King” brought him there (the hobo calls himself the King of the North Pole) the engineer and fireman are actually unnerved by this, they then explain why. On Christmas Eve of 1933, a hobo named King snuck onto the roof of the Polar Express, but when it started to approach the tunnel that we see in the film, he tried to jump off but was too slow, and was killed when he struck the entrance to the tunnel. His ghost has been haunting the roof of the Polar Express ever since. The girl suggests that the hobo took on a role similar to a Guardian Angel, and that the reason he helped the boy on the roof was because he didn’t want him to suffer a similar fate, which explains his later appearances on the frozen lake and at the North Pole.

Eighteen years ago, in second grade, my school made it a tradition to show this movie to the students every year around December. And though I have graduated high school and haven’t attended that school for 14 years, I always make time to see the Polar Express to remind me of the innocent times of my life and helps me believe in the Christmas spirit. Also, some people call their cup of coffee a cup of joe.

Someone pointed out to me that the girl also has her doubts about Santa, it's just shown super subtly to where it flies under the radar. How? By the "Are you sure?" thing. Sure, she SAYS she believes in everything, but there's still a little voice in the back of her head saying, "Are you sure?" That's why she freezes up whenever someone says that. What if she was wrong this whole time? What if all this is meaningless? So when they're at the North Pole, and she finally says, "Absolutely!", that was the film's way of telling us she now finally truly believes it's all real. That's why she didn't initially hear the bells.

Ah, one of my favorite Christmas movies! Definitely brings back childhood memories! Funny story about this film, actually.... I was 7 when this movie came out, and my parents took me and my little brother to see it while it was still in theaters. We went and saw it, and it was all fun and games until we got to the scene where the caboose detached from the rest of the train, and those three kids were trapped inside. Then the caboose started racing downhill, uncontrolled, and I FREAKED out because I was scared that something bad was gonna happen to those kids. In fact, I literally ran out of the theater -- and my poor little brother, who also started freaking out, ran after me! Our parents followed us and gave us a minute to calm down, but we were too scared to go back inside the theater. So we just walked around the mall for a bit and bought the book version of The Polar Express to take home. I kinda "redeemed" myself when I got to see the full movie on DVD later on... and because I learned there was a happy ending, I DIDN'T run out of the room! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Herplesheimer's is a real toy store from where the author of the book grew up. They paid homage to that by making the store show up in the movie. In fact, asside from the concept of "a train that takes you to the north pole", everything in this movie is based on a real thing. Obviously "Know-It-All Kid" already talked about the locomotive. And the character's movements looked so realistic because the movie was using motion capture, one of the earliest films to do so if I'm not mistaken. Also, "Joe" sis just another name for coffee. You know "a cup of Joe"

One thing I've caught about this movie over the years: When they're walking around the north pole, they hear the elves talking about the last present having candy cane paper and a green number 7 bow. You're supposed to think that it's Billy's present, but eventually, you notice so is Hero boy's present. Leaves you to wonder: did Santa know he was going to lose the bell?

This was my favorite book growing up. I was surprised to see they made it into a movie and was curious how close to the book they’d keep it. It was cool how Tom Hanks played so many roles in this. This was the first movie to be completely motion capture and holds the Guinness record for it. If you watch closely while the train engineers are trying to get the pin they snuck in a shot of the flux capacitor from “back to the future”( which the director of this film also did those movies). Another callback to “back to the future” is when Santa takes off and flies off into the night his sleigh disappears like the deloreon did. Our local train museum every Christmas does a Polar express train ride where they do the hot chocolate, dancers, the hobo and Santa comes aboard to give everyone a bell. It was funny one year my mom got one that didn’t have the striker inside so it didn’t ring. We all had a good laugh at it. It’s such a great time. One year a family was aboard with a foreign exchange student who had never scene the movie and just recently read the book. The look in her eyes as she experienced it all made the ride that much better. The kid stayed in the back car cause he was shy and you see when his ticket is fully punched what he was supposed to learn on the ride. Yes a cup of Joe is a cup of coffee. One idea of why it’s called that is cause the head of the navy back in 1914 outlawed any kind of alcohol on naval vessels so the strongest thing they could have was coffee and disgruntled soldiers started calling it a cup of Joe.

Herpolsheimer's was a department store in Grand Rapids, Michigan which closed in the 1980s. Many cities across the United States once had their own major department store in their downtown. Where I live, Springfield, Missouri, it was Heer's Department Store, which closed in 1994. These places were known for their Christmas window displays full of that years toys, as well as moving mannequins and other such magnificent displays. Magical places to see at Christmas time. The poor kid in the lounge car is an interesting juxtaposition. In the old days 1st class passengers were the only ones to use the lounge car. This kid being poor gets the best seat on the train (as an aside, the hobo is my favorite character is the ghost hobo). Living in the United States, this past summer I got to take my first trip by train (I'm 40) from St. Louis, Missouri to Baltimore, Maryland. I absolutely love trains, and this trip was truly a wonderful adventure for me! I love the line the conductor says: “The thing about trains... it doesn't matter where they're going. What matters is deciding to get on.”
