Samsung Gear 360 Camera Won't Charge - Fixed!!!

I was super annoyed once I received my Samsung Gear 360 Camera, the free gift for preordering the Note 8, and found that I couldn't get it to turn on. After trying most of the steps that I found on Samsung's community forums related to this topic (us.community.samsung.com/t5/G..., none of which worked for me, I decided to try something new.
This is what I did to finally get it to charge:
1) Using the USB Type C cable it came
2) Insert 32 GB Micro SD Card (Samsung brand, not sure if that matters though)
3) Based on other suggestions, I lightly slammed the Gear 360 down on it's base on my wooden desk
4) Plugged it into the low voltage port on the Power Brick
- It actually matters which side you have it plugged into the Gear 360.
- The first time it I plugged it into the low voltage USB port on my power bank it did nothing
- I unplugged the USB Type C Cable from my Gear 360, then replugged it in the opposite way
- Right after I plugged it in the opposite way (there are only two possible ways to plug it into your Gear 360), I noticed the lights turn on on my power bank for like 3 seconds, then go off...
- I knew I was onto something since the power bank momentarily recognized something was plugged into it, but it did not hold a charge
- Left the USB Type C cabled plugged into the Gear 360 in the direction that caused the power brick to momentarily activate
5) Go to your Note 8 box and find the USB to USB Type C dongle. It's a little nub looking thing that you can plug any USB cable into on one end (female) that has a USB Type C male end on the other.
6) Leaving the cable that the Gear 360 plugged into the camera, I connected the dongle to the USB side of the cable
7) I have a USB Type C port on my desktop PC computer so I plugged the Type C Dongle into the open USB Type C port on my computer and afte like 2 seconds I heard a ding and saw that red light above the power button turn on!
- It also worked when I plugged the USB C dongle into my Note 8, so if you don't have a laptop or desktop with a USB C input, try plugging it into your phone.

Thank you!!! This made the difference. I plugged the adapter to a USB A/C cord - nothing. Turned the C part 180 degrees in the camera, pressed the record button, and on it came. Cheers!

I'm glad I came across this. I hadn't used my Gear 360 for a while, and couldn't get it to charge or do anything. I thought it was gone for good, but pluging it directly into a USB C port to charge (my Note 9) worked. Now I can plug it into a regular USB adapter in the wall, or power bank etc to charge.

Thanks for sharing the experience! In my case, I used the dongle and tried to connect to the notebook. Did not work. So, I used a power bank that had a built-in USB-C cable. It worked. The dongle was not needed. I disconnected and used the same cable as before, this time connected to a common power adapter, and started to charge. This occurred after a long time without use. But after this procedure the Gear 360 seems to have "woken up" again.

WOW this guide seriously saved my bacon seriously. My Gear 360 was completely drained for 5 months because I was busy with internship. I tried to charge it for minutes but it won't show up. Guess I found another use for that adapter that came with my S9+. Tip: If it still doesn't turn on, try pressing the power button again, it might turn on.

This video has saved mine too. I’ve put a micro usb to usb c dongle in my camera and connected a micro usb to usb a cable to a usb a wall charger. And that worked. Didn’t use my camera for about 1,5 year! In the mean time Samsung has discontinued the editing software. For anyone reading this, if you have a windows pc I believe you could use the Garmin virb software to edit the video. And Mac users I believe can use Final Cut Pro to edit it. iMovie won’t work. I think in the near future I will post a 360 video made by this camera when driving a velomobile. But only if I really could edit the video in Final Cut Pro. Wish you all the best and thanks for this video. I bet it saved many cameras from being wasted.

Thanks for a great video. I didn't have a USB-C port on any of my computers, but did find a Thunderbolt port on my 2017 iMac. I had a short cable plugged into the Thunderbolt port with a USB connection on the other end. (I have no idea where the cable came from, but it must have been included in the iMac box.) I used that cable and managed to charge the Samsung Camera model SMR-R210 by plugging it into the USB end of the short cable.

I tried everything everyone else did and nothing seemed to work. I then tried this. I had to also add in the USB type C to USB mini connector for some reason... But it only started charging once I plugged into my Note 8. Now it charges fine from the same wall wart that it wouldn't work with any cable or combo of cables and directions etc... I can't explain it but I know a lot of USB engineers so I am going to get to the bottom of it! In the mean time... THANK YOU!!! I was about to pitch the thing! How and why you tired all this is beyond me but the fact that it now all works ( and no you don't have to slam it on the table), is awesome!

Worked for me as well, using a standard USB Type A female to USB Type C male adapter. After seeing your video, I thought that the key was breaking the USB-C communication since I was using a USB Type C to USB Type C cable. So I tried the USB Type A to USB Type C cable, but to no avail. It didn't work until I added the USB Type A to USB Type C adapter as in your video. It makes no sense what-so-ever, but it works. This guide half helped me, using the adapter worked, but when plugged in to my note 9 I had to hold down the power and record button for around 5 seconds, then the charger light came on, thanks for the help!

I tried connecting to my Note 8, but it didn't work. It doesn't work with USB ports of PCs and laptops either. Tried with low amp powerbanks, and it didn't work. Only thing left to test was a PC with a Type-C port. Unfortunately, I don't have a PC that has this port. Completely hopeless as of now ... :(

I hooked my gear 360 into a power bank and held the power button down for 20 seconds. Boom, the 360 sprang back to life! Thanks!!! Not sure banging it on the table helps. I did hit it wothy palm a couple times. This video really helped!

Honestly dude thank you thank you like quality I don't care backgrounds I don't care you just gave me so much valuable information because I just spent the last hour trying to figure out how the hell to charge my damn new VR 360. I just got this on eBay for $60, meanwhile 6 years later here in the future I'm about to get an s24 and that's a whole shit show to get to work in general. Thankfully there are plenty of apps that can do all the rendering for me on the go and when I'm ready to upload hopefully it'll work like a DJI. A million trillion thank yous

I received one as a gift also with my Note8 (wonderful phone in its day!) and I used it semi-faithfully as my 'silent partner' while I was on my fall and early-winter surf fishing trips. Fast forward four years, three months and it wouldn't charge. Showed no signs of life when I went to charge it very recently. I tried a number of USB-C charging cables I have here to no avail. That experience was about one week ago. Today is May 7, 2022. I found this video and I grabbed my Gear 360 Camera and tried a generic-type USB-C charging and data cable I don't believe I'd used before and voilà, on comes the little red charging light. We have a pulse. The connection worked when I rotated the connecting head 180°. Second time was, apparently, the charm. It's not fully charged as yet but it's satisfying that the red light came on. Perplexing as h*ll. I'd become so accustomed to this device charging and then doing what I wanted it to do that I never gave any thought to it one day becoming inert. So there I am as of this moment. I'm looking at the Gear 360 Camera and hoping that it takes a full-charge and does what I then need it to do on an upcoming road trip in just under three weeks. *I got a green light indicating a fully-charged Gear 360 Camera and now I'm using it to see how the battery holds up after recording a few 360° videos.

Thanks for the suggestion. Plugged in the dongle into the Power Brick and the red charging light turned on and the battery charging indicator was displayed on the 360 camera. Removed the dongle and plugged the camera into a USB port on my laptop and the camera power light turned RED! Yeah! Thanks again! Save me the cost of buying a new battery which would take a couple of days to be delivered and I need the camera tomorrow for real estate marketing. Good job. PS. My Samsung 360 camera is the older model - looks like a large golf ball. And I discovered that the stitching program does not work with the Galaxy S21 series phones. I have a Galaxy 9 and that works, but will upgrade to a used Note 9 as I can control the camera with the Stylus.

Just an fyi, if the battery on the Samsung 360 first gen camera is too low, it will not show a charge indicator light upon first plugging in. It may take about 10-15 minutes before the light will show.

I had this problem. I tried the included "white" cable with the USB "A to C" adapter and it still didn't work. I was able to use my USB "A to Micro" cable with adapters on BOTH ends and it worked connecting to my laptop. I left the Gear 360 connected to my laptop for a couple of hours while the LED was red, indicating a charge, but I didn't dare try turning it on. After a few hours charging I was able to turn it on and connect it to a regular "Wall Wart" and it's been charging since. To clarify, the included white USB "A to C" cable appears to be a CHARGE ONLY cable. My USB "A to Micro" is a verified CHARGE/DATA cable (I can use the cable to access the data on my Galaxy S8 with my laptop using the "Micro to C" adapter). I'm guessing the "Wall Wart" adapters won't provide a charge unless the device has a small amount of charge to indicate the device is actually present

Mine also would not start charging. I used the note 8 charging cord and it still did not work. Plugged the original charging cord back into the 360 and it started to charge after 5-minutes waiting.

So if the Gear 360 "Overheats" it will shutdown and not operate until it gets a chance to cool. Therefore, another thing to try is to simply unplug it, let it cool for 15 mins or so, and then try again. I suspect that if the problem IS an overheated camera, even the USB adapter trick won't work. I got to this page searching (while waiting for my camera to cool), and "was" going to give this a try, however by the time I got back to the camera, it was already cool and therefore started charging with my regular charger.

Just encountered the same issue! Bought it in May’17, now cannot power on. I don’t have a Samsung adapter since I’m iPhone user, so i decide to reset by pressing 3 buttons at the same time and plug into wall charger. Nothing happens, so I switch to using power brick, Macbook, then into 1A then finally 2.4A brick to charge..nothing happen. After a min or so, and finally this sucker lit up...sheesh! Wondering it will explode on me!

I don't have a usb type c charger on computer or anything but, did try a few phone chargers and finally on a Huawei I got an orange blink and currently charging... (its a plug to usb and normally uses their usb lead to a different connection but, simply replaced the lead with the camera lead of usb to type C) Hoping once charged it will then work via normal usb charging port and not need this charger every time... Will update later with results...

It's pretty similar to the "moisture detected in the usb port" that dogs Samsung devices & the only way I've found to get rid of the moisture warnings is to plug it into a pc/laptop

That is good to remember. I can't recall which Samsung phone I was using where I repeatedly saw that 'moisture detected' alert. It was puzzling to say the least. Thank you for reminding us of that possibility.

Mine... Used a high power charger, removed the MicroSD card, then held the power button down for 3 seconds or so... the charge light came on, and its been working fine since then!

worked here using a MacBookPro USB-C charger, its really strange because if I use a direct USB-C to USB-C cable connected to ACDC Apple, it won't charge, but using a USB-C to USB, and then USB to USB-C converter (as described in the video) it works!

I have this same problem. What I did was plug the usb-c cord on to the gear 360 while the charger is hooked to the power source then press and hold both the power and the record buttons at the same time for 15 seconds or until the LED indicator blinks red. After that, unplug the usb-c cord from the gear 360 and plug it again after 1-2 seconds and it will start charging.
