His rhythm playing is ludicrously sick. He can go so deep into any bag in the universe of guitar playing - like any time and as well as anyone - hard to find it but if you hunt long enough I'd bet sure it is out there, him tapping like Eddie as well as Eddie. Well maybe not nut darn close or he wouldn't stop practicing till he was satisfied. Mind you all, I'm quite content never seeing SRV do this, but what like do we all think he didn't see that and go, let me take a weekend, or month, or whatever it requires to meet my standards, and master this in case for 20 seconds of one solo one night in my life it seems appropriate - yes, of course he did. His unreal tremolo picking (surf rock Dick Dale "Dirty Pool" sound) is a fine example, not a staple of Texas Blues (pre SRV at least)he mastered it as a kid (to the point they gigged together eventually) then seamlessly integrates it when needed and becomes part of HIS SOUND. Like he sought that out as his mission in life to have such range, it is his obsession with it out of love that is part of why he is such a stand out. He took a normal method and went 100X beyond what normal or even excellent players do. Most guitarists learn the same way - you try to play and learn your favorite songs and your style is what emerges from those efforts - what we thankfully get (and this vid is an awesome example of) are occasional times he dives full on into his arsenal like this - like Motown funk rhythm on par with the very best - god, so cool. Thanks for this!

SRV and Double Trouble (Chris and Tommy) were a trio that was perfect on its own, they didn't need and we the fans didn't want anyone else. And then Tommy invited a friend to add some horns to a song and by fate, he happened to bring Reese Wynans with him. Stevie may have been the leader, but these guys were every bit a band, Chris and Tommy as accomplished as Stevie and the perfect rhythm section. They allowed Stevie to soar by being with him wherever he went. The night of that recording session, the band realized that as great as they were, Reese was the missing piece they never knew they needed. By the next day, Reese was a member of the band and we were all the better for it.

He used 13 gauge strings for the longest time, and I think was still using them at this point. Bending strings that heavy (thick) is incredibly tough and requires some seriously thick callouses/strength. Stevie once played until the callous came off, then super glued it back onto his fingertip and continued right on playing. He was a once in *forever* talent. I hate helicopters.

What a lot of people don't recognize is that SRV used two versions of the nursery rhyme lyrics for the song... Mary had a little lamb it's fleece as white as snow & fleece black as coal... He switched them up for live performances... Guess indicating how he was feeling that particular perfomance??? That angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other... Knowing SRV's inspiration were African Americans [blues] and Jimmi Hendrix so I wouldn't read into it as anything racial... For clarification purposes... In fact I think the original nursery rhyme itself might have done both white & black versions... Technically speaking maybe where SRV took both versions...
