The 2020 Corolla comes with android auto and apple car play as standard. 2019 models can have it retro fitted from May this year at a cost of £120

You talk about handling , and that feedback is poor from the steering , that's fine but i have driven this vehicle and the chassis is brilliant. They have stiffened the whole set up without sacrificing ride quality ( take note AMG). Its not a bad handling car and corners flat and composed , most people watching this will never appreciate or need the setup found on an Focus ST. Plus this Corolla is better looking , greener for the environment and more comfortable than a Focus.

53MPG on the 1.8 Hybrid is a lie Had one for a week and averaged 60MPG Smashing car drive one and you'll see what I mean

Done 600km on mine up until now. So far sitting on 66MPG ( 4.3l/100km). 350km national roads, 250km urban.

​@Southern Tuning Got about 5000km in my 1.8 now, mixed roads. Average of 50mpg ( 4.9l/ 100km), including a lot of idling in the winter ( to heat up the car, or let the kids sleep ). So far, I'm happy with it, overall. It does have a bunch of little issues that can be annoying: Cons: Auto high-beams do very poorly when cornering. So poorly that I would only use them on long stretches of straight road. Radar driving is only really useful for highway scenarios. The acceleration is too sudden and the distance settings too ... distant for any kind of urban/ traffic assist. The auto-braking and warning works, but again, only on a straight line. You can't tow anything with it. Most accessories are only available through the Toyota dealers, for now. And they suck at after service ( and price ). While I appreciate the ride and handling ( compared to the Auris ) the low ground clearance is ... annoying. ( a matter of getting used to it I guess ) I'd like to easily switch to petrol-only ( for heating up the car/ charging the battery for example ). You can do it, but it's hidden in a sub-menu of a sub-menu. Eco mode is downright dangerous for high-speed situations. The acceleration delay is massive. To be fair, the manual says to only use it sparingly. Pros: Lane assist works very well, even on really crappy roads. So does the traffic sign reading. I still find the overall consumption to be ok, given our harsh winters. Most frugal car I've owned (for mixed roads ). It consumes like an upper-towards-great diesel on the highway and a really good (tiny) petrol engine in urban situations. Long warranty. Very competitive pricing ( if you get the low or 1st step trim, nothing comes close to its price-specs combo ).

​@RandomShart Hi there. All my previous cars had some sort of screen and Nav unit. I almost never used them, although I paid for updates a couple of times. Saying that, the version I got is the *lowest* trim available here. It has no center display at all. Just a mid 2000s looking unit that slots into the same space and does basic bluetooth/ mp3/ radio stuff. That reminded me of a different issue though. If you get this trim, the car doesn't really have a decent place to hang a phone off of, except the windshield, I guess. If I were to choose again, I'd still have a serious debate about whether the extra 2.5k euro is worth the screen and the alloy wheels. As an addendum to the above: getting that gas mileage meant driving the thing in a particular way. ( think prius pulse and glide and such ). Having only owned manuals before, this wasn't that hard to get into. Maybe a week or two.

@RandomShart Another update. This past winter, we've used the Corolla in mostly short-distance city driving scenarios ( using the Discovery for long-distance ). Consumption went way up, as expected. Driving it on eco, you can expect 7L+/ 100km. A bit of a let-down, but not at all surprising. Physics is physics. Better than the Discovery in short-distance city driving during winter anyway ( closer to 18L / 100km ). This was a particularly mild winter though (the closest comparison is UK "winter" ) so I am expecting worse numbers when actual winter hits ( if ever ).

You should mentioned it has 15 years battery warranty and historically 4th gen Prius power train is bullet proof, very reliable.

i would have never guessed that u can pulled off pink! i prefer your point of view more btw. also i think when comparing prices, comparing a compact station to crossovers (hybrid niro for example) would be more accurate since both of them kinda share the same customer profile but i don't think anyone would find themselves asking if they should get a volvo v60 or a corolla.

I'm excited Toyota currently doing 0% Finance on new cars. So bought a 2.0L icon tech, and gettinh £2k part exchange on my 2006 astra. Really good deal. No deposit straight in with payments £400 per month. Going to save money on fuel do about 26 miles each way for work . Pretty much 30mph zones and motorway. Apparently it still uses some battery even in petrol mode.

yes he is a moron who doesn't understand chassis and suspension setups. The car handles brilliantly for every day driving , comfortable and composed , a perfect balance.

As someone who is "looking forward" to his first test in an automatic (MY21 version of the above) this weekend, I was watching to see what Mark was doing with his left foot. The reason for this is I've had so many different comments about breaking in an automatic it tends to get confusing.

Another good review with plenty of useful information. But as with Mark's reviews, I find myself obsessed with Dan's legs. In this week's HJ user questions, the old git with the hat really went over the top by suggesting those who do not use left-foot braking are intent on killing people. He then uses the same baseless and untested argument that left foot braking stops the car quicker - hence my obsession with HJ reviewers legs. Dan is driving the Hybrid version of the Corolla which comes with an auto box. Now from what I can see, his left foot appears planted on the floor and not hovering over the brake pedal, therefore it will take longer to lift up and brake rather than do what 99.9% of auto drivers do (as well as every driver of a manual box) and use their right-foot to brake. And that's very wrong according to HJ because the driver becomes confused when right-foot braking, mistakes the accelerator for the brake and rather than stop, speeds up and causes an accident. ( HJ's theory, not mine). So come on Dan + Mark, do you left-foot brake? Do you agree with that daft old bugger in the hat and accuse anyone who doesn't left-foot brake of wanting to kill people?

I have had one of these since the end of October, 2020. Filled it on purchase and once since and it’s now February, 2021, and that’s with 45 litre tank. It all works, feels safe on the road even with the snow and ice of late, while everything works. I am content with it. Put simply, yes. Diesel economy driving in the City is part of what I bought it for.

I feel everyone was a bit too harsh on Dan with first reviews cuz people just didnt understand what was this segment all about. Dan got more comfortable in front of camera and looks a part... keep up the good work. PS, if honest john was a band called Queen, Dan would play bass, Mark would definitely have a moustache 😅

15 YEARS Battery warranty in UK and Ireland is just amazing. Hybrid in Toyota are more reliable than even Toyota's non hybrid car or any diesel

I’d love to know about real mpg...my neighbour reckons her Auris does 60mpg around town but only 45mpg on the motorway, while my mini clubman diesel does 65mpg on the motorway but 45mpg around town so, as I don’t live in a town, I’m averaging 59mpg... is this corolla aimed at town drivers or can it work on fast roads?

I had an Auris Tourer and found that, on the motorway, the mpg was very speed sensitive. So, if mpg is important then keep the speed at around 60-65mph.

...and if mpg is really important, and you can manage with the range, then get an electric car. There are Leafs and BMW i3s out there that can be had for similar money or less.

​@@scoopermg8226 Depends what you are comparing to, really. Does *any* diesel beat it for city driving? No. Probably not A/ National roads either ( ~55MPH cruise ). Highway though is another story. A *good* diesel will seriously outperform this. The 1.8 gets Somewhere over 42mpg in highway driving ( at 80mph cruising ), fully loaded. Not particularly great. Do you do 80%+ highway driving? Are your trips over 200km return? Get a diesel. Less than 200km return? Do you have a plug where you park? Get a cheapo electric as a commute car. If you don't: Get a diesel. Do you do mostly city driving? Do you have a plug where you park? Get the cheapest electric. If you don't have a plug: Get this. I am willingly ignoring specialized cases ( aka 4x4s and vans ). Also, this does not mean *any* diesel will be better highway wise. Quite a few, do in-fact, consume more or equal to the corolla.

Not really. I own one for a couple of months now and in some cases I have no combustion engine at all for 5 minutes or so. Brilliant car, IMHO

The self charging happens by using potential energy and combustion and you can't plug it in. It's a simple way to differentiate it from plug-ins to avoid confusion when talking about them. What sort of moist croissant thinks that self charging ever implies to "amperage out of thin air"
