When I prayed if the Book of Mormon is true and the Church is true, I did get a answer from the Lord. After that I promised to keep the Word of Wisdom. The next day I went to my work where they all smoke. The Lord made smelling smoke awful. I had been smoking for the past 4 years about 40 sigarettes by day, rolled by me. Used a pack of tobacco per day. I was addictet. But the Lord made it so awful for me to even smell smoke, I never touched a sigarette again in my life. The Lord really blessed me then and there.

@@addalittlelight remember the old adage, "that which we resist, persists." Often, paradoxically, the harder someone tries to wage war against something, the more difficult it becomes to eliminate. Instead, it can be helpful to work on the acceptance and integration at an appropriate level that is consistent with a healthy relationship. Of course, this takes time and patience. Sounds like you are making progress but I would suggest that sometimes the "addiction" model actually creates its own set of problems.

@@drjerryduggar I appreciate your concern. It was much worse before I accepted I was addicted and started going through the addiction recovery program. Recently I read somewhere the thought that WE don't bless the food, the Lord does. We thank him for it and ask him to bless it. Maybe the common saying of "Will you bless the food?" is another cultural thing we can rid ourselves of. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to ask, "Will you give thanks for this food?" I had started to do that and I feel the shift has been beneficial.

Recovering addict. I have seen the my life dominated by my addictions... and then see myself miraculously changing, after searching my heart for the pride that thought I can handle this on my own. To surrender the fearful clutching of false hopes, selfish ideas, covetous desires, and contentious ambitions. If there is any person who is the source of the wisdom, the knowledge, the power, the patience, and ultimate grace required to overcome addictions, it is the petitioning for the power of the Father in Heaven by not my merit or any other man or god's, by by the name of Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone. There is hope. There's always enough time to try again. There's always enough reason to start right now. The tiny pathetic willingness that can be tried right now is always enough in his hands, cause he surely knows how to make it grow into a saving, powerful desire.

My 2cents on Nebraska corn. We heated our 2 story farm home with (dent or feed) corn in Palmyra, Nebraska. It cost $135/year on average (mostly for ground oyster shells to keep the starches from clinging to the firebox). It felt so good to heat our home with a very small portion of the 15 acres of corn harvested every other year. We had a trek there with handcarts that members of the stake. Best time of our lives! If I had to guess, the order of use probably looks something like this: Animal feed Alcohol (ethanol) Corn syrup by the trainload Cornmeal (breakfast cereal, cornbread, hush puppies, pizza crust, etc.) Export is huge, so think of that corn serving the world. When I was a teenager I thought the word of wisdom put me in a box and confined me, told me what I could and couldn’t do! By the time I graduated college I was addicted to chewing tobacco and realized that I had been deceived. Satan gave me the illusion of being free to do whatever I wanted, all the while he was sneaking a ball and chain around my Ankle. Being dependent on tobacco, alcohol, drugs or anything negative is a form of hell! After I quit tobacco I realized the word of wisdom doesn’t confine us but frees us from Satans chains of slavery.

I believe that we are kept from having a perfect knowledge of things because the exercise of faith is very powerful. When we exercise faith, we create evidence that we are truly disciples in our hearts. We are acting out of trust in God whom we have been told is loving. We don’t know for sure but still we act on his commandments. This evidence helps our confidence wax strong in His presence.

Yes Jared!... You hit the nail right on the head when you stated that there are people out there that dreaded learning the Doctrine and Covenants I was one of those people. I thought that they were just rules and regulations that were designed to inhibit my wants. Instead I have learned many lessons but perhaps the most important one is that Heavenly Father provides for us a pathway to traverse and as we continue we have the 'Privilege' of 'Learning'. Oh what a wonderful gift for the Lord to bestow upon us. The gift of learning provides us with the understanding just how much God really loves us. He provides us with gifts that we may not even understand yet but administers them through His chosen voice---a Prophet. Thank you Brother Halverson, my friend, for all that you do.

Comment from the back of the class here... my cat has discovered you. He decided he needed to be in the middle of your lesson and jumped onto my desk and settled down on my notebook. Getting it out from under him, he turned so he was face to face with my iPad, you. He sat there fascinated, and my mind wandered a bit. You were talking about how wonderful it is to hear the gospel in your own language, how God speaks all languages, and I’m watching Crash stare intently at you, then I wonder if animals were taught anything before this life, were they taught a “gospel “? Or they just are? Mind wandering here, then he smacked the iPad with his paw. Apparently your hand gestures are what had his attention. So much for my cat feeling the spirit. On the other hand, I’m loving your lessons! Can’t take enough notes, thank goodness I can hit paws (ha). Many years ago I took a class. As we discussed this section and Emma's involvement the teacher said she (Emma) was pregnant. Not only that, but the floor was not tight and the spittle would drip down to the lower living quarters. I have not researched to see if she was actually pregnant, but having given birth to nine children, I can easily imagine the nausea and absolute disgust she experienced with the necessity of this nasty cleaning chore. I am sure she was grateful for this revelation as am I. From an economic standpoint we save a huge bundle of money by obedience to this principle. Not only that, but in reading Return From Tomorrow written by a nonmember (George G. Ritchie, MD and psychiatrist), it is obvious that not only our physical bodies become addicted, but our spirits do also!

Regarding "adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest:" Obviously, many people are able to drink alcohol or use other substances in moderation without any apparent detriment, however, a significant percentage are, in varying degrees, vulnerable to becoming addicted or otherwise harmed. We typically don't know ahead of time who has a predisposition for addiction or harm, and usually find out only after there's a problem. So, the Lord adapted his counsel to protect even "the weakest of all saints," by commanding us ALL to abstain. If all were wise enough to obey that command, no one--not even the weakest--would ever become addicted or harmed. That, I believe, is why it's "adapted to the capacity of the weak"--not because it's so easy to obey--which, for some, it clearly is not.

Thanks so much I got the link! It’ll be fascinating to see what they were saying in 1950 before all the landmark studies like the China study, the epic study and the women’s nurses study about the linked to disease and animal proteins. Did you catch the little bit of song and dance over verse 15? It seems like he didn’t want to admit that the Lord was referring once again to eating his animals sparingly, and instead try to make It’s about in the winter time. I was laughing out loud at that point. But obviously the footnote refers back to the animals.

@@timwrightfamily740 I'd like to share what I've found: During the Kirtland Camp march George A. He said fish was much healthier for us to eat than meat, and the use of fish in warm weather was not prohibited in the Word of Wisdom. We drove to within 3 miles of Belleville and camped in a patch of wild grape vines. It rained considerable." George A. Smith, “My Journal,” The Instructor 81, no. 5 (May 1946): 323.

I'm a rational and I used to think that people who wouldn't accept the teachings of the Church were just stupid, lazy, or dishonest. I realized later that learning spiritually is a different skill or ability. I have both a mental and spiritual testimony.

When I read Les Misérables, I couldn't stop thinking that Bishop Myriel would get along so well with the prophet.

89:15 (and "these" hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess of hunger) seems to be referring back to the previous phrases in verse 14 immediately before it (not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth), reiterating what was said in 12-13. Our Lovely Deseret hymn written by Eliza R Snow seems to show it was understood what was meant: Drink no liquor, and they eat But a very little meat. Love watching...

Sorry to sound ignorant but I’m unfamiliar with what you’re saying. Could you elaborate more please. I’m new and trying to understand better the wow. Thank you in advance I just looked up the hymn you mentioned and I think I get it. Thank you

I would like to bring up one point, that in relation of quitting alcohol/drugs. Not everything should be stopped cold turkey (15:04). Alcohol, for instance, quit all the sudden can actually lead to death. I'm going to snag the scriptures here to back me up, but we ought not run (or quit) faster than we have strength. Anyway, just want everyone to be safe :)

Such a major promise to be protected from conspiring men. Big pharma is something that people often dont realize how much money and control they have over peoples health. I am so grateful for the word of wisdom, it truly is inspired from God. It has changed my health and my families health. I highly recommend the book called, Just what is the Word of Wisdom by Dr Christopher. Incredible insight!

Thank you so much for another very well done presentation. Just one other thought. The Lord mentions barley as a drink for a purpose. I no longer take any asthma medicines - I drink a glass of barley water each day.

Jared, 89:15, do you think the "only to be used in times of famine" could be referring to the "beasts of the fields and fowls of the air", thus reaffirming verse 13?
@ramonahudson57103 жыл бұрын
In Doctrine and Covenants 89:12-15, I noticed some things differently. In verse 12 it refers to beasts and fowls "should not be used , only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine." However, in verse 14, it refers to beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals. The differences of beasts vs beasts of the field, and fowls vs fowls of heaven stood out to me. So, when verse 15 referred to "these," I focused on the animals and not the grain and concluded that there are different beasts and fowls that should only be used "in times of famine and excess of hunger." For example, we have plenty of cows and pigs (beasts) and chicken (fowls) to eat, so don't kill other animals, like wild animals, unnecessarily for food; except in times of famine and excess of hunger. What do you think?

That was a very insightful and different way of looking at the scriptures. Now mind you I’m no one looking at scriptures, but there seems to be a difference. And the difference seems to be domesticated versus wild, possibly. Thank you

I was kinda hoping for some more historical info on when it went from hot drinks to specifically coffee and tea. My mom was challenging me on this very thing this week.

The hot drinks at the time that revelation was given were fermented tea and coffee. Lots of wisdom with the tannic acid in fermented tea and coffee's depletion of B vitamins and upsetting of carbohydrate metabolism. Sorry that I can't can't give you the studies on those as I lost them with some damage in a move a long time ago, but the same information should still be out there.

when it comes to tea, there needs to be clarification. what about chamomile or lemon-ginger tea? this question always gets asked during a gospel doctrine lesson. what about de-caf drinks? if one sticks to the hot drinks explanation, wouldn't hot chocolate be included?

I’m pretty sure the prophet has cleared this up. It means black tea and green tea. Herbal tea is fine. Use your common sense to know what is good for you! Enjoy!

Herbal tea is technically an “herbal infusion,” it has to have a tea leaf in it to be tea, like green or black tea. It’s just easier to say herbal tea. Because of sugar and additives, hot chocolate from the store probably isn’t great for you anyway but I don’t think it’s included.

Brother Halverson, you spoke of not doubting. My question is how can you display a faith of no doubt when the words “if it is the Lord’s will” are always there upon receiving or needing a personal blessing?
