My oldest son returned from his mission, married in the temple, has two children and decided, in March, that they were 'taking a step back from the Church.' He had some wild days before getting his life together at 22(?) to be worthy to serve a mission. He was So Strong! He's been on both sides. Why step away? Last Dec., he 'came across' some Church history that disturbed him. He says he searched all of the Gospel Library for answers and prayed, but "the answers he was receiving bothered him." His words were he feels he was betrayed. He sent me a Lengthy list of questions. He asked if I'd look into them and if they caused me concern. With a background as a historian, counselor, reporter, and copywriter, he said he knew I could probably dig deeper than he. I Dug In! Started at question 1, went through Gospel Library & each source. Conference talks, interviews, podcasts, talks given at universities/devotionals/MTC/etc...I spent Hours that, after doing the same for Each of his questions took a couple of months (I'm retired). During my research, he kept prodding me for My answers on His questions. I shared what I'd found thus far, and that nothing caused me concern, discomfort or doubt, that it didn't affect my testimony. That, in fact, it had strengthened it and focused me on the very center of the gospel...Christ. He slashed each source and point. He countered w/ what he'd found. Seeing where this was going, I asked about his sources. Then, about the source of their (or that) source(s). He tried valiantly to defend his new position. After that couple of months, he said he 'determined' I was "no longer a reliable source of information." I said we both had opinions and that, while I was sad they were stepping back, I loved them very much. We'd just talk about all the other things we do and love. Then, he abruptly quit calling. No texts, messages, no photos of my GRANDS, no family time on Discord or Facetime. I tried calling. Nothing. Both of my sons and their family live in Utah - 1200+ miles from me. I learned he'd talked to his brother about his questions, too. He told his brother he wasn't having anything to do w/ me until I apologized and he thought it was a sincere apology. ??? I'm not sure what I was 'supposed' to apologize for. However, I think that's when it truly hit me how he felt about me (& his brother) not getting the 'answers'...a.k.a. 'enlightenment' he got - and was certain we would. So, he didn't really want my research and answers. He wanted me to support his findings. This is Way Too Long, but you give me hope he'll remember who he is!

A night and a day having passed before anyone knew to report my brother's only daughter missing, and after searches by rescue efforts with dogs and drones and helicopters and after my sister and I searched the lower foothills with a vehicle what we could access in the dark and the rain, I had occasion to bear witness that God is the God of miracles and if those miracles do not look the way our prayers imagined they ought to, those with eyes and ears blessed with the visions of eternity, can rest assured that miracles are in the works by an all-knowing and wise loving Father in Heaven. And after the lifeless body of my darling 19 yr old niece was found this past Sunday on the mountain near her home and retrieved, I can still witness, and even more confidently, that same testimony. Our Laird ancestors survived the countless ordeals of the Willey handcart company. Our direct ancestor was an infant in arms. I DO know from whence cometh true strength. If I did not, I would not remain on this planet 53:00 .

What a beautiful and apt discerption of the Plan of Salvation worked out by our Loving Heavenly Father. We will have wondrous joy in this life as well as almost indescribable pain, and through it all, He walks with us, He is there for us; hearing all our prayers, and answering every one of those prayers even if the answers are not what we want to hear. He knows best for us and those we love and lose because He has “Eternal Knowledge” He sees with “Eternal eyes” Taking a loved one away from us is heartbreaking, yet He allows it to occur because He knows we will become even stronger and endure as we realize that He loves that person even more than we do, and because He loves us so much He has blessed us with the knowledge that He has that loved one in His arms and they will be safe and loved till we are reunited with them again.

When people have expressed their concern about the belief about wanting to become gods, i respond by saying " you as a parent would want for your child to become everything they could become. Hmm? To me your understanding is a very human one. That not in and of itself bad, and I do understand what you’re saying at least from the human standpoint! Good parents want to give good things to their children, heck Jesus said there are even bad or evil, parents who want good for their kids, or want to give them good things. But that’s a human response isn’t it. I guess my question would be why do you want to be God? I mean. Facts are fact right? You and I and every other soul that has ever drawn the breath of life are fallen right? Scripture says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Seems to me, and I would admit that this is a human thought as well. But I want to go to the kingdom! But I do not want to be a god! And I don’t think that any human will ever be a god. Personally. I think that is such a mystery to humanity at this point that none can perceive as such a thing. Entering the kingdom doesn’t make one a God! It makes one a child! May I ask you! Are children gods? Or can they become gods! It all have sinned, and need the blood of Jesus to cover them in order to enter the kingdom, and if Jesus is in Fact the only begotten son in whom thee was no sin. Then it stands to reason that there would be only one God and one name whereby humanity may be saved! And that name of Jesus Christ! I personally suspect that none who go to heaven aka the kingdom of God will have a desire or even a thought to be a god! That’s likely what the at least partial intent of the princes throwing their crowns at the feet of Christ and shouting Hosanna to the Lord Jesus Christ for he is our redeemer and God. (paraphrased) So in closing I guess my response to do parents not want the best for their children? Of course! No doubt! The better question might be what makes you think when you’re standing in the presence and glory of God that you would even desire such a title? My own spirit as the Holy Spirit speaks to me, I get this incredible spirit response in my being that says, trust me Phillip. When you get to the kingdom you will be both overwhelmed by the glory so much that eyes has not seen or ear heard what the lord has prepared for you. And from that human standpoint when I hear the spirit speak to me in such a way. I must ask! Why would I want to be a god, if this fact and truth is in fact the gospel found in scripture. Rest assured that when we get to heaven we will still be learning! And who knows! Science today says energy doesn’t stop it goes on some way and some how. What I know from the spirit is time in eternity is no more. And people or their spirits which enter the kingdom will be learning forevermore! Because no matter where they go into eternity! When they get there they will see and understand that God, THE ONE GOD, THE LIVING GOD, THE CREATOR GOD, even Jesus Christ The Lord, has already been there! Joseph Smith Jr once said that the greatest calling a person could have in this earth is to be a “member” of the church. Not a priesthood, apostle, prophet, teacher , priest, no! A Member. Jesus said that because he has come, he has given humanity the ability to become sons and daughters of God The Father! My dad and momma were incredible people! Not perfect but incredible! And they wanted the best for their children. So not only did they see to it physical needs, but our spiritual needs. My mommas family were the 1st to hear the message of the Book of Mormon back in the 1870s and my great grandmother was instrumental in bringing to date some 300 or more souls to the Lord via the children she bore. Albeit I was raised in the RLDS group that stayed in and around the Naavoo and independence area. Who had not accepted the leadership aspirations of Brigham Young. I digress. I feel within my spirit that being a son or daughter of God is a far greater title that of being a “god”. Will that thought even be important to us when we stand in his presence! In my spirit I can see crowns flying off heads when Jesus walks in the proverbial great hall, and begin to land at his feet! For he is in fact God enough for me, and I need no other god, nor is my desire to be a god! To hear him say “enter in my son, in whom I am well pleased” brings and incredible feeling of sufficiency to me! Blessings to All. Remember! The Book of Mormon is a power testimony of Truth and brings incredible clairify to the one who is searching with sincerity of heart! Praise be the mighty name of Jesus.

@@pjones1403 Thank you for sharing your insights... I really appreciate your willingness to add them here. I would like to continue this conversation with you if you are willing. My question for you, to start the conversation, is what is your understanding of the meaning of the term 'Eternal Progression'?
@LokimusPokomaliАй бұрын
I was going to pass this comment by... but it just keeps coming back to mind... Yes, that is one relatively minor point of LDS doctrine... but also one that we know almost nothing (beyond speculation) about... Does it come up very often for you? Is it just that they have heard it elsewhere and have asked their 'member friend' about it? It seems that there are so many more important truths that would help bring understanding and even conversion (or reconversion) more effectively. Sharing about the Savior's grace and His role in our salvation, or the role of prophets on earth again, or the restoration of the Gospel... proving contraries, the stages of Faith... so many topics that can build faith and 'publish peace'. Does your response tend to continue the conversation to more sharing of Gospel principles... or does the conversation just end abruptly?

One of the connections I had never made before was the connection between the confounding of the languages and the faith that enables us to rend the veil of unbelief and "see" God. Love the concept of learning about God through trials and recognizing we don't have the power. Reminds me of Step 1 in the AA 12 Steps, "We admitted we were powerless over Alcohol...(add in anything here: Life, Resentment, Anger, Fear, Kids going astray, Politics, etc. etc. etc.) and our lives had become unmanageable." Next Step: "Came to believe in a Power greater than ourselves who could restore us to Sanity." Third, "Made a decision to turn our will and lives over to the care of God..." Do you see the Gospel at work in these steps? "I can't. He can. I will follow Him." And this is only the first 3, all of them create a tactical/practical plan use the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

For years I struggled with Ether 3:15 where the Lord stated that "never have I showed myself unto man". This seems to contradict D & C 107:54 where the Lord appeared to Adam and his righteous posterity LONG BEFORE He appeared to the brother of Jared! The Spirt finally (it took a while) whispered to me that the Lord did NOT intend to show himself unto the brother of Jared, but it was his faith that allowed him to see the Lord first! The whole time Ether 3:15 actually answered my struggle "for never has man believed in me as thou hast"

When I was 14 years old, my best friend told me that she didn’t believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and was not going to go to church anymore. I told her that I did believe. However, I realized that I only believed superficially. I started to wonder about people around me, who believed in other churches in the same way that I believed mine was true. I took this question to my Mom. I asked her “how do we know that our church is true, when our next-door neighbors believe the Methodist Church is true, and the people across the street believe the Catholic Church is true.“ My wise Mother showed me in Money 10.:3-5, I could go to God himself and ask if the book of Mormon was true. I guess I’d never really listened to this when I’d heard it hundreds of other times, but I listened this time and decided to put it to the test. That day, I began reading the book of Mormon one page each night. I did it backwards. I would read my page, and then I would kneel down and say “Heavenly Father, my mom says that you can let me know through a feeling that the book of Mormon is true . Will you please let me have that feeling to know that it’s true?’ I did this every night for three months. Keep in mind I had never read the book of Mormon before, even though I was VERY active in the church. As time went by, I remember consciously realizing that my prayer had changed. It changed to, “Heavenly Father, I believe that the book of Mormon is true, but I still haven’t gotten that feeling to know that it’s true. Can you help me have a feeling to know that it’s true?” I really did believe it, but I wanted to know from Him. Well, at the end of those three months, one night I was actually having a sleepover with my cousin and my sister, and we were laying in the family room sleeping in sleeping bags. As we were going to sleep, I remembered that I hadn’t read and prayed. I didn’t tell the others what I was doing, but I ran into my room, read my page, and prayed. Then I went back into the family room and fell to sleep. In the middle of the night, I was awaken by a thick feeling that consumed my whole body. It was a feeling of pure love, safety, and joy!! As I laid there, I realized why I was having that feeling, and I said out loud “so is the book of Mormon true?”Then that pure feeling of love, pierced my WHOLE body even stronger. I laid there feeling as if the Savior was literally by my side. I basked in that wonderful feeling for about a half an hour. And I knew. With no doubt, that the Book of Mormon was true. That the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints is God’s church upon the Earth today. I knew from God himself that Moroni’s promise works! That testimony has grown ever stronger as I continue to to study the Book of Mormon at 51 years old! I bare this testimony to whomever wishes to read it in the name of Jesus Christ amen.❤

You never fail to give me new understanding. Thank you for the insight of Moroni and Ether being parallel to Mormon and the Book of Mormon except on is for Isreal and the other is for the Gentiles. I love this type of stuff and never had any idea of it before. I recognized that the Jaredite record is the Nephites 2nd civilization’s witness like the Book of Mormon is ours I saw that the book of ethers placement is inconsistent with the rest of the book. because Mormon entered everything else where he found it in the plates on Nephi. But this record he just promised he’d include it later. My theory is he was going to keep the 2 civilizations records separated but it with Moroni’s doing it and adding so much into it (which is great and I’m glad he did) and the adding the book of Moroni afterwards it isn’t as clear cut. I had the question while studying the Book of Mormon why I couldn’t have knowledge I sought. Now I know Im not given the knowledge because the Lord loves me. After alot of asking and study my conclusion is I wasn’t ready to live what that knowledge required. While walking by faith if I mess up I’m still under the umbrella of the atonement so I stay relatively dry. But if I have the perfect knowledge then I have no protection. You mentioned something Ive wondered about for a long time. Did Mormon or Moroni retranslate the book of ether or did he use the King Benjamin translation? Can you give me a reference that clarifies it. Again thanks for everything

If you go to the story of Noah and hit on the word window it says it was mistranslated and means stones. Noah used glowing stones to see in the ark. What God was saying here is you haven’t studied your scriptures enough, go study them. Or in other words I already answered this question for you. Go search it out. God says not to trust in the arm of flesh but in him. Why would he answer 2 questions and not the third, cause he already answered the third. The story of Noah would have been in the scriptures Mahonri, the brother of Jared, had. God wanted him to search through the scriptures for answers. Just like he asks us to do today.

I always thought that the reason why Jared and the brother of Jared, and all their friends and family, had to gather seed of every kind as well as flocks, male and female etc., was because they would be making their sea journey during the great “Flood” of Noah’s day. Now, brother Halverson, you have stated that the flood of Noah’s time had already happened, so why did Jared’s group need to gather seed of every kind and animals of their flocks by 2 x 2 male and female?? They could not grow anything on their ships that were tight like a dish for there wouldn’t be enough sunlight or soil to nurture plant life.

Ether 3:15 says, "And never have I showed myself unto man whom I have created, for never has man believed in me as thou hast". Was the brother of Jared greater in faith than Adam, Enoch, and Noah?
@michellewright9915Ай бұрын
Adam saw Heavenly Father and Christ but not as a mortal man. Adam wasn’t a mortal man in the Garden of Eden. But then Enoch wasn’t mortal either when taken up he was translated. Perhaps it means no mortal man. Or maybe it was that Mahonri saw Christ in his flesh and blood form and maybe Adam only saw him in Spirit form. It says that Mahonri saw that he would take on flesh and blood, at the time he only had a spirit, he hadn’t been born yet. So maybe it is that Enoch was the first to see him with a form of flesh and blood.

In this episode, the brother of Jared is never named, but Joseph Smith learned his name when Joseph was asked to name a baby in 1834. His name is Mohonri Moriancumer. I was a little surprised that no one seemed to know that. As I understood, the reformed Egyptian made it easier for Moroni to write "brother of Jared" rather than writing his name phonetically.

But where's the EXTENDED version? I always listen to the EXTENDED version! 😀 ❤

Lastly, I always thought the records of Ether had been buried by Mormon but were unearthed by Moroni at the command of God. I don't know if that is true, but it is another possibility for Moroni saying he would need to rebury the plates.

It is interesting to think about how he was chastised for not praying… but I wonder if certain kinds of prayers can also be considered as ceasing to call upon God… for he said to Joseph Smith that though the people of the different religions “prayed” to him their hearts were far from him. Do we cease to call on God or really talk with him today and just give standard prayers and hurry on our way…

I like the part where it says I know you can do this. He knew because God already had done it for Noah. He literally knew God could do it because God already had. Sort of like Joseph Smith. A few years after the first vision he goes back in prayer. It says he knew God would answer with divine manifestation because he already had. Here you have the same thing. Mahonri knew God could do it because he already had.

At 1:02:56 it says that the brother of Jared was the first person to see Jesus as a Spirit, with flesh and bones ,but not blood . What about Adam and Eve just before being turned away into the world being told to leave. Jesus was a Spirit then also next to Heavenly Father. They saw Jesus not by a perfect faith, but by instruction to leave as we learn in the Temple. Could you please explain this more please. By the way I love you and what you do! Thank you Brother Wardlow in Pocatello Idaho

Hole at the top and one at the bottom. If the hole at the top is for air to come in and that is topside, what is the purpose of the hole at the bottom? I can only think it was a hatch to the bilge. On a ship the bilgewater, is the water that collects in the lowest part of a vessel. Bilge pumps would then pump out the water from the bilge back into the sea. If so, the Lord must have shown them how to build pumps to handle the water. Just a thought.

Please please tell me where you were able to get that portrait of Jesus in the background. I know it’s from The Chosen, but where did you get it from?

I want to know , why the story of Jarred did not mention the names of his brothers? Did they have the names?
@michellewright9915Ай бұрын
Joseph Smith revealed the name of the brother of Jared. He was walking down the road, Joseph Smith, and was asked by a couple to bless and name their baby. He names the baby Mahonri Moriancumer. Joseph tells them that was the name of the brother of Jared.

Joseph Smith is a Hebrew in a Gentile nation. Most of us are. I know people adopted in. Their patriarchal blessings actually say adopted in. I can’t speak for anyone else but I am not adopted in. My best friend is. Most of us are European descent and most don’t get patriarchal blessings that say adopted in. Knowing people’s who blessing actually says you are adopted in to such and such tribe. My whole family are literal descendants.

On another note, I just learned from an Egyptologist that the Mesopotamian diet was mainly birds and fish, so I think I've gotten a better idea of why the Jaredites would gather birds and fish even though we might not for ourselves. I still don't know why the bees? Hmmm...

What was the brothers name??
@trishcrowe5474Ай бұрын
Mohonri Moriancumer. It’s never mentioned in the Book of Mormon. During a baby blessing, Joseph Smith named him that and said it’s the name of the Brother of Jared.

Jared, please explain about Moses. Seeing God face-to-face wasn't that before Jared. The brother of Jared or didn't Moses see God face-to-face?
@ButchWallace-u9wАй бұрын
I have never understood the idea that the brother of Jared was surprised to see the Lord in the appearance of a man. Didn't they have the creation story, which indicates that man was created in the image of God? What else did he expect the Lord to look like? I haven't listened yet - does Brother Halverson talk about this at all?
@danmeehan7220Ай бұрын
One important note Bro Halverson! We dont know that the urim and thummim from Mahonri Moriancumer came with the record. In fact i believe we have aome evidence that Ether seperated them and may even have given them to Coriantumr. Because when the record is found we know King Mosiah is already a seer, and theres the whole King Benjamin/King Mosiah mixup that happens in the early manuacript. I think that comes in part from not realiIng that Mosiah 1 got the seerstones from the people of Zarahemla.
@mharris6200Ай бұрын
Is there more than on uirim and thumim? I'm pretty sure there's more than one seerstone.

Why do we say "even Jesus Christ"? Is grammatically incorrect and it says to me oh yeah and him too. I know it started with Gordon b Hinckley and I don't know why we continue that, anybody know why??

The Founding Fathers established a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC; NOT A DEMOCRACY. Democracy is majority rule. In a democracy, your rights are at the whim of the mobile. If the majority decides to take your property because they decide you have too much, they can take your property. In a Constitutional Republic, it doesn't matter if every last person thinks you own too much.
@ArlaMo8Ай бұрын
Democracy is a concept in which citizens give the government sovereignty. Unlike a monarchy, where sovereignty is granted by noble birth, in a democracy, power comes from the people. A republic is a structure of government, which the USA has. We actually meet the criteria of a few kinds of republic: constitutional, presidential, and federal. Constitutional republics, by their very nature, are democratic. They get their power from the people and require citizen participation. We are a constitutional republic that has democracy. We are not a direct democracy where all citizens vote for everything, but a representative democracy, where citizens vote for representatives who make decisions on their behalf.
