Unstable Ivy Damaged Gable End: Repairing With Lime Mortar

Күн бұрын

With time running out for lime mortar to be used outside, Dawn takes advantage of the gorgeous September sunshine and sets to work using lime mortar to stabilise the 200 year old stone building which has been badly damaged from Ivy.
Ben takes advantage of the lack of rain and cleans the off grid IBC rain water harvesting tanks and moves them slightly to make things tidy before all of the plumping and pumps get boxed in and insulated for the winter.
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

Hello Dawn & Ben. I am very happy to see them resuming that rhythm in the restoration work and in the day-to-day work. Very happy to feel, upon seeing and listening to you, that you are returning to life with your great motivations and hopes, with your personal determinations intact and returning, little by little, to the joy that characterizes you. Also, in the previous video, it was a pleasure to meet Mitch, we had a nice conversation in the comments, I hope you tell us about him and his progress from time to time. It was very nice to see you there helping him. Dawn amazed me today, and I'm not talking about her impeccable work with the stone walls; What a beautiful way to honor the family, in Ben's mother, who is so committed to your achievements, and to attend that course, in difficult times. Congratulations to both and the family. I'm going to start some work around the house this week, since my sister, my niece and my nephew are going to live here again in about 2 more months. Which makes me very happy. I hope you have a great week. A hug. Mario.

Good for you Dawn taking the course. You learned a lot of valuable skills & you made contacts. With an old house you’ll always need something and knowing the right people or even knowing someone who knows the right person can make all the difference. Very kind of Ben’s Mom too. I wonder where that gigantic stone on the wall came from. Imagine the effort it took to get that in place. Wow. Great to see you both. Take care ✌️💚

I have watched quite a few of these restorations and non of them work as hard as you two do. You got the most destroyed home and outbuildings and you don’t hesitate to do anything that needs done. You also had the most difficult land to work on. I also like that you both have the same sense of humour and laugh at the same things at the same time. I admire you both.❤

Its a nice size building, in fact it's a lovely property in general! I should also add and it has to be said that you have shown great wisdom in your approach to restoring this home not withstanding the fact that I understand that neither of you have any experience in the building trade, it shows that good character always rises to the challenge and it is indeed inspiring to others!

Welcome back guys and Ben jumps straight in. Hard hat is nice but what about toe protection and shin guards. Very impressed with that wall you repaired and the amount of Ivy yet to be removed. Very handy to have so many useful tools to help with things. Blue skies were very lucky to get working under before the big change that is coming. I bet the neighbours cannot believe in what you have achieved and looking so much better. Ben make Dawn a small ramp for getting the wheelbarrow out of the shed. OMG Spanking the wall with a purpose with the brush giving it a shape and looking good. I love to see Ben cleaning the outside tanks and making it look so easy and now looking so clean. Man of knowledge with all these ideas put into use. Very impressive video to watch.

You both are just amazing! Each week is testament to the expansion of your knowledge base and what you are accomplishing on your prop! It is wonderful to see the stone walls returning to their pristine state and the banishing of the ivy roots to the “scrap” heap! The tanks are looking clean and tidy and all of your effort will really improve the view from the lounge once you have an opportunity to sit there for more than five minutes…. Thank you so much for taking us along on your journey to make this piece of property truly a little piece of heaven on earth. Have a great week and look forward to seeing you both next Sunday.

Dawn, I still am going to keep suggesting that you get a mortar bag ( like a cone or large cake decorating bag) so you can squeeze a thinner mortar in between the stones and behind the stones. I really do think it would be easier and more solidify the walls! You do a great job and I know you know what you are doing , but just a suggestion. I never want you to finish now because I would miss watching you both and your wonderful home and grounds ! I can’t wait to see the next thing done but that just means it’s closer to being done😢🙋‍♀️

Wow Dawn, you really are starting to look like a professional. I’m glad there are still courses that teach this type of old construction. As you were stippling or hitting the mortar with the brush, I was thinking what a workout and a great way to release anger. LOL. Ben I appreciate your giving us good info on how to keep and use the ibc. I started looking into getting one or two to use for my veg garden after you talked about them last year. It’s still in the plans but for next season. I can’t believe it’s time again for you two to get things ready for winter again…boy how a year has flown by. See ya next week.
