+Aaron Woolley To be honest I never paid much attention to the Eagles, a country rock band with nice vocals... and then Felder joined the band and I remember this cut on the radio and this Don's solo jumped out of the radio speakers... nuff said!! What I find impressive now is to listen to all the tasteful background parts he's playing, all these nice little parts worked out that literally define many of the Eagles hits.

I have seen the Eagles as the original four, with Don and without. All configurations sound great. When I listen to the Eagles presently, they have the vocal sound we all love. When you see Don Felder, its the guitar tones and style that is the trademark sound of a lot of Eagles songs. I met DF in Morristown after his show. He came out on stage and talked and signed autographs. Band politics aside, both sides have positives as far as entertainment value goes. The biggest difference is that a ticket to an Eagles show with cost you a small fortune, but you can see Don and meet him for a very reasonable price. I dont understand why people bash one side or the other. If you like the Eagles, go see them. If you like Don Felder, go see him. Being a guitar play, I prefer the way Don plays the songs and he has a smaller band that sounds great.

I love how Felder worked his way up from Roadie to guitar tuner for Steuart Smith shows a lot of ambition. And Steuart recommended Felder as a temporary replacement after Steuart wrote Gotel California, Those Shoes and Heavy Metal then left the group in the late 70's. Felder has always held the reputation as "The Best Roadie turned Fill In" the Eagles ever let play backup with them. I love his Rhythm guitar parts.

+TYX91101 Actually Don Felder was not with the earlier albums but the later ones. Don was not around with the first two and had very little presence with the 3rd album helping as a studio guitarist with a few recordings. It wasn't until the 4th album where he started making significant guitar contributions when the Eagles went from a country rock sound to a more rock sound until they broke up after the Long Run. It was actually Joe Walsh that catapulted them into full rock status.

It seems as if you can't say one nice thing about Don Felder without one of Frey and Henley's groupies slamming him. For Christ Sakes, He's a Great Musician. Credit where credit is due. Enough of all the belly aching and defending those two for being assholes. And for anybody who sees the eagles on their current tour ( I have seen it many times) Its scripted down to the lame high fives from two people who hate each other and even the stage banter is the same at every show. People react most to Walsh who steals the show with his honest brilliance. Henley and Frey are both incredible, but lack a certain honor when it comes to money. Both Walsh and TBS are salaried sidemen who the fans love but don't share in the profits. They get a paycheck. Its all very Vegas. They play the hits, go through the motions and everyone leaves happy. NO Felder is NOT in the Eagles anymore. and its our loss. But allow him to at least play and sing well and enjoy what he has to offer. Personally, I cringe everytime I hear Steuart Smith play one of Felders solo's. The pinch harmonics have no place in the eagles sound. But that is my problem. I am sure he's a great guy and happy to be playing with legends. Lets all get over it and enjoy the music

dirkworld I think you make some decent points. I actually feel sorry for Smith in that he has been touring with the Eagles for over a decade, but cannot be called part of the band.I also feel sorry for poor Joe who must now slow down so Smith can try to match him. This is not to say Smith "sucks" as some try to do with Felder's voice. Instead it is just pointing out that Smith is no Felder, and Walsh is not challenged like he was when he was part of the great guitar duo that were pushing each other to new heights. I agree with you regarding watching Smith and wishing it was Felder instead. BTW - I head Walsh do an interview deriding the Eagles for using protools which I fully agree with him on.
@dirkworld
@dirkworld 9 жыл бұрын
yawns smith thanks pal, I dig your point of view as well. O think when it comes to music people just like to be divided. They're all great but its just a little shitty they can't find common ground. ps , they use protools live?
@MultiEviscerator
@MultiEviscerator 9 жыл бұрын
When I heard Walsh say it, my guess is that he was talking about in the studio. I gather that because he said if protools were around back in the day, they would still be tweaking the Hotel California album. I take from that he was referring to Henley who is known as a perfectionist. I believe Walsh respects him for it, but that he takes it too far. Walsh also likes the raw dynamic you get with everyone playing together without worrying about perfection. He seems to believe that is what is missing now days with most groups. Personally I agree with him as I'd prefer to hear a "mistake" or two with Walsh playing from the gut, rather than a synthesized version of him. Yet I always respected and enjoyed how the Eagles were on stage live, yet sounded like their studio perfection in most cases. With them also playing some of their solo hits during the HFO tour, the songs still sounded pitch perfect from Frey & Henley, with the guys playing them as if they were the solo bands. Even the sax intro for "You Belong To The City" was great. It is just a shame people need to knock one guy because they like another. It would be as if I knocked Frey and said "he sucked at playing the guitar", because he has always been the weakest guitarist of the group. Guess what, Frey is very good, just not a Leadon, Felder nor Walsh. Don Felder has a good voice, he is just not as good as the others. The bottom line is that each are great musicians within their own right, and collectively they were one of the greatest and most talented bands of all time.
@dirkworld
@dirkworld 9 жыл бұрын
yawns smith Couldn't have been said better! I always wondered why people do that. Personally I LOVE Frey. I just hate his ego. Why would one of the greatest singer songwriters be jealous of another singer songwriter especially when he is also in your own band!??! There has always been that competition thing with him. As for Henley, well. I mean... what can you say about one of the best voices ever. He too seems driven to the point of murder for credit / money. How much money does anyone one person need? Collectively we had a band firing on so many cylinders it was earth shattering. Each one shining with sheer brilliance and together, total magic. I just wish the fans didn't feel the need to pick sides. I still go to see them and Felder as well. I read the book, I saw the film. I have an opinion but i won't let it disable me from enjoying them together or separately. In the back of my mind I have a dream where Roach and Fingers both wind up in a hotel bar late and night. They have a drink and talk about all the shit and realize none of it was worth it.

+Jeralyn Thomson Don Felder wanted more partnership in song writing and he posed a threat on Henley and Frey. They wanted the profits as more of a twosome. You see Don Felder was a musical genius as they were and could have done so much for the group.I never knew what a genius Felder was until I viewed some of his interview footage here on youtube. Their greed destroyed all of that (Henley and Frey) I have seen some of the interviews and could easily read between the lines.

Who is extremely jealous of Henleys solo success. P.s. they hate each other. Thats saying a lot. I suggest you read Felder's book. it will shine a lot of light on your heroes. You really dont know a lot about it. He was nowhere in the Eagles singing category. He was nothing but a backup singer and guitarist with an attitude. Without Henley and Frey he would still be playing bars and night clubs. He got fired from the Eagles for being too greedy and being an asshole and yet he still sponges off them by playing their music.. This is just sickening to listen to him ruin their beautiful music .He stole enough off them already! Retire.

Don Felder talented and what an opportunity for him to have Steuart Smith pick him up at the bus station all those years ago in Jacksonville and then take Felder under his wing and show him how to play and tune a guitar. Felder is without a doubt one of the best Roadie's turned guitar tuner to ever help get the Eagles from show to show sluffin' that equipment around. How about the way Steuart Smith let him fill in for him those last few years before they broke up due to Felder Mis-Stringing Timothy's Bass with guitar strings.

Frey called Felder an asshole in the film bio, but it's pretty clear who the real asshole in that band is. Frey co-writes really well but has no magnanimity of spirit. Maybe Felder overreached in wanting an equal split w/ Frey and Henley, but Frey did ZILCH in the Eagles off-years. Felder can play circles around Frey and was an integral part of the band for years. Smith is a great hired gun, but Felder was part of the band, and Frey couldn't tolerate anyone questioning his own greatness. If I had to spend years on an island with Glenn Frey, I'd probably go drown myself.

I won't say Frey did "zilch". You Belong To The City, Smugglers Blues, Sexy Girl, The One You Love, The Heat Is On...plus he had a very successful acting career. Now was he an asshole to Felder? Absolutely. There was no justification for what Frey did. (Not so much Henley, the split was mostly between Felder and Frey). It was wrong of Felder to want an equal share of the Eagles, though. It was Henley and Frey's band and they have been in it from the start. Felder, Walsh and Schmit were all hired hands to complete the lineup. However, Frey could have handled it much differently, because the Eagles don't sound the same without Felder. It's time for one of them to man up and try to mend this whole thing.

aems24 I agree with you guys Frey's animosity was just too much. Damn, why must some people have Giant Ego's. Everyone gets older and holding on to negativity just doesn't make sense in the "Long Run"!

aems24 Felder was not brought into the band as a hired gun, but as a full financial partner. However, when the band re-united in 1994 for Hell Freezes Over, Frey and Henley insisted on receiving a higher percentage of the group's profits and a much larger payout on the Eagles' 2000 boxed set. When Felder started asking questions and demanding answers about the band's finances, he was fired! Felder sued, and Frey and Henley settled. Although the details of the settlement have never been made public, Felder was reportedly paid a very considerable amount of money to drop the suit (i.e. he won, even though he's not allowed to say it). There is only one reason Frey and Henley would have agreed to settle IMO -- to prevent the court from opening up and scrutinizing the band's financial books. I suspect there was much more at stake than millions of dollars of Eagles' revenue. I think the lawsuit was perceived as a threat to Irving Azoff's empire.

Deb Potter - You're missing my point, though. Without Henley or Frey, it's not the Eagles. They are the only members who have contributed to every song, every album, and every tour. Of course they're going to make more money than Felder. They're household names. How they treated Felder was wrong, but he should have just been happy with his place in the band. Maybe "hired hands " wasn't the right worda, because they are/were full band members, but it's Henley and Freys band.

aems24 Hi. I didn't miss your point. Please let me clarify what I was trying to say. It wasn't wrong for Felder to want an equal share of the band -- it was his contractual right. I'm NOT denying your right to your opinion. I'm saying that signed contracts supersede such opinions -- yours, mine, and even those of the actual band members! Unlike Walsh and Schmit, Felder was brought into the Eagles by Frey and Henley as a full partner. That's a legal title, not a musical one. Regardless of the fact that Frey and Henley started the band and regardless of how much or how little any of them contributed musically or otherwise, all full partners are legally entitled to equal shares of the partnership's profits. They also assume equal shares of any financial and legal risks. When the Eagles re-united in '94, they essentially did a corporate restructuring, rescinding Felder's status as a full partner. I think the big question that arose from that was not, as you stated, whether or not Felder should have been happy with his place in the band. Rather, did Frey and Henley (and Azoff) have the legal right to strip Felder of his full partnership? My guess is that they didn't...or they wouldn't have settled.

I rather see Don in a club than the eh hmm "Eagles" with stunt doubles. He actually looks like he's having a good time up there and is into the music instead of scouting all night and checking his watch to see how long before the limo gets there to get back the hotel and count the money! He sings this and Victom of love just as well as Henley!

***** I love how your name is all lowercase yet your entire comment is all caps. Seriously though Felder is one of the most technically proficient guitarists I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Steuart is good, but he is like a a robot when he plays, absolutely no emotion; it is akin to Felder's studio work being played over the PA system. Also if you'd rather listen to Henley sing go listen to him, nobody is making you listen to Felder.

CrypticWizard9 In anyone's defense criticizing Felder singing this song including mars and you stating to go somewhere else if we don't like to hear Felder sing it. I for one didn't imagine clicking on a One of These Nights search on KZbin to find Felder singing it since he has no credits to this song. Hotel California, Victim of Love, Those Shoes, would all make sense even though his singing voice sucks. All great songs he had some credit in writing but not this song! That being said, I feel no problem pointing out the obvious!
