These Method Bead grips are very revolutionary. Today, I want to push them to the limit and see how low I can go without losing a bead. The fact that you can basically get the same level of performance as a beadlock wheel in a simpler lighter package AND still be DOT legal is pretty wild.

I have been running those same method wheels since they first came out. And I love them. As I recall, Method has a patent on the bead grip design. So you won’t see them on other brands. But method does offer several different designs in the trail series now if you don’t like the wagon wheel look.

I've got a set of AlphaEquipt wheels with the "beadgrip" it's just designed differently. I've yet to see how well it functions in the real world because I've only had them on for about a month, but I'll be at Lonestar Toyota Jamboree so I guess we will see then. I liked them because they offered them in a "pizza cutter" spec so I can run my tall skinnys but still sit nice in the fenders. Plus they had a white option. I was trying to get away from the black.

what would be the discount for method 701 6x5.5 17s? Its always frustrating to me when a company wants to spend some amount of money up front without telling you all the details. If you save 5-10 percent which is generally the discount for stuff like this it isn't really worth it. If I m saving 25-30 percent then it is absolutely worth it. Im not willing to spend 100 bucks to find that out though
@DirtLifestyle

Dude, I feel you. It's interesting being on this side of things. I don't know the exact discount but I know it's the most you can find in the industry. The reason I know this is because I asked the folks at onx if they can tell me the discount to include in the video, and they were instructed by Method not to advertise the discount. This is because it will upset the dealers who sell these wheels at full price. As a consumer, my knee-jerk reactions are to always think people are withholding information like this to take advantage of me in some way. But now that I am on the industry side of things, I have found it is more complicated than that. I hope this makes sense, good luck brother 👍

No one will believe me but I de-beaded these. I was being a bonehead though, I put lots of beans on it trying to bump up a rut. My guess is that because I have such a strong steering rack and heim rods, the wheel was the weakest part. I was at 8 PSI. That being said, I will continue to rock these!

There is another option that allows any wheel to run down to 0psi to. 5-7 wraps of duct tape or gorilla tape on both beads. I ran a full snow wheeling season and a snow race with my buggy on generic alloys at 0.5psi and never lost a bead. I even wrap the inner bead on my beadlocks....takes hydraulic pressure 3/4 way round the tire to pop it of the bead.

Hey Nate! Two of the guys in my wheeling circle runs those wheels and we snow wheel every weekend, the proof is in my channel. We are just south of you. They both run around 2 psi in the snow and have never lost a bead, one thing someone brought up thou that I never thought of is if you need to put a boot on the inside or need to do a massive repair you will definitely not be able to get the tire debeaded on these wheels, so that’s where an actual beadlock has a benefit, I never thought of this until someone brought it up. I still want a set but something to keep in mind. The beadlock is 32 bolts away from being able to get to the inside of the tire.

the disadvantage is that it's still a traditional wheel when it comes to installing a tire. you will have to take it to someone or use a shop machine to install tires. that's what I like about the Beadlock style, it allows you to install tires yourself at home. I've had too many tire installers in the past mess up lug nuts on traditional truck wheels to where I remove the wheel myself and bring it to them to install a tire.

I was thrilled at how they were working at 9psi but I saw this video a week ago and just had an absolute blast in Sand Hollow running at 5psi doing low and some middle speed sand stuff. Unbelievable traction and everyone else in my group had regular beadlocks. Considering the weight and cost savings plus the convenience I’ll never go back to 2 hr torque-a-thons again. I do wish theyd come out with a rash ring though like Teraflex which is like HDPE or something. Thanks again Nate!

Beadgrips are great, but only work well on LT or MT rated tyres. i have had alot of pop outs and flats with them running no less that 8 PSI with P rated tyres. there is also an issue that the bead grips hold the bead so well that if you have a pop out they are likely to damage the bead and start leaking. another issue is if you want to remove the tyres from the rim, again they hold the bead so well that the tyre gets damages while removing it from the RIM, great solution but not for everyone.

Fantastic video and review. I've had experience with track wheels that have little knurls (horizontal hashings) on the bead surface to prevent slippage, and have a set of Venomrex wheels that have similar. There is one other option you didn't mention. Icon Vehicle Dynamics wheels with the Innerlock Technology. So that makes 4 options for bealock like capabilities. Beadlock, Beadgrip, Rock Monster and Innerlock by Icon. The key is also wheel width. The narrower the wheel the better the tire stays on. I destroyed the sidewall of a 37 km2 from rim to tread on a stump. I had it mounted on a 15x8, and with a 8” sidewall gash, I was able to 4 miles off-road on it and 7 miles on road without that tire moving on the rim. On the road the tire was folding over on it self and throwing tread, but the bead held the whole time.

I don't know if you know but land Rover used a similar idea on the disco 2 or wheels having worked on a lot and owning one I know for a fact that the wheel design to run lower tire pressure with out bead coming apart if you ever get a chance to look at oe disco 2 wheel look at the bead near the valve stem area and it will be slimmer to allow for dismount

The other really nice thing about the bead grip is balancing! Generally balancing beadlocks is nearly impossible so you always have a shake on the road.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Жыл бұрын
The downside to the bead grip is the same issue...balancing. With a beadlock, your wheel isn't going to spin inside of the tire, it's locked down on the bead. With the bead grip at really low psi, the wheel will absolutely spin inside of the tire. So if you have them balanced and go wheeling, they won't stay balanced for long. If you can find a tire shop that will balance beadlocks for you, they're a lot more likely to stay balanced.

The most important thing to hold the bead is to get a narrower wheel relative to tire width. I've never lost a bead in a decade of wheeling. 12.5" wide tires, mounted to 8" and 8.5" wide wheels. I would not go wider. My standard pressure is 10psi, no matter if it's rocks or just cruising on FSR. Deep snow I drop it down to 5psi. I haven't tried lower, but I wouldn't be too surprised if I can go down to 2psi with no problems.

You should be able to half that safely in soft terrain. Your minimum psi is going to be way different than his though, it has everything to do with how much weight is on the tire. Your truck will likely pop a bead at 5psi or more whereas his could run just about flat without issue. Run what works and don't get hung up on a number.

I COMPLETELY agree with you on the compound quality being the make or break difference on the tires seating to the wheel and getting the most potential out of the Beadgrip.

So I’ve got something I’d love you to test! I’m running Method 701’s with a 315/75r16 on a 3rd gen 4runner, locked front and rear with a Marlin Crawler taco box with 4.7’s in it. The issue I’m having is I’m spinning my rear wheels inside the tires. Spent a weekend up at Sand Hollow and the tires had spun over 180deg on the rim, knocking everything way out of balance. My theory is the ridges help with side to side movement but because the tire rides up on the ridges it doesn’t allow the tire as much grip that way. The other problem I have is I burp tire’s constantly. I had to stop on Double Sammy and put air back in the tire as it had burped itself completely flat. I usually run between 8-10psi on sandstone trails like that. I never had any of those issues with factory wheels. Curious what your thoughts are.

As a tire person, I have always disliked the inner bead on the bead grips. They can take a long time and a lot of tricks to break loose with a tire machine... But then I saw you potentially had an inner bead slightly slip loose and you changed my mind. That would have been a lot worse with a traditional inner bead. Turns out that the inner grippy bead is worth it! Still much easier than dealing with traditional bead locks. I definitely want these one day!

Have you looked at coyote? They seem like a good option for weekend warriors/ people that like their current wheels. Price isn't terrible compared to some bead locks. And you would get the addition suspension at extremely low psi

I love the idea of a bead grip but they need to offer it with a sacrificial replaceable face ring
@JimYeats
@JimYeats Жыл бұрын
That would then kind of defeat the purpose because you now have an additional part that has to be bolted on and is a point of failure, and probably shops wouldn't want to touch it, nor would it likely be street legal. I don't think this is intended for someone who is going to be literally beating the h*ll out of them and scouring the rim against rocks constantly. It appears the intended market would be someone who wants a little more air down capability but isn't at the 'dedicated trail rig' point yet.

@@JimYeats not at all there are tons of companies that make a wheel that has bolt on sacrificial rings, just none of them make the bead grip. Method evens offers some with the sacrificial ring but not the bead grip in their HD line. The mount just like normal tires.

I daily at 20 psi on a 9" wide rim. Air down to 5 psi for snow wheeling. I HAVE blown beads in the past on a 35 12.50 r15 at 3-4psi. That was simply pushing the limits if you're actually wheeling hard. Side loads will take the bead off the rim. Now with bead locks I run 2-3psi all day no problems.

My coworker has these on his truck, told me they’re almost impossible to dismount. I went to work on them, took me a good 20 minutes just to get the back bead to pop off the wheel. These wheels are serious, they grip the bead like no other!!

Definitely need a tire machine to dismount, lol. This is not something that can be done with a heavy truck and a highlift jack like a traditional truck wheel.

@@DirtLifestyle this was at a Discount Tire, I had to put metal air chucks between the bead seat and the tire bead to hold it back all the way around. Then I was able to get the tire bead to pop over the wheel hump that’s designed into the bead grips. I’m definitely going to order a set this winter!

Seen those method beadgrips lose the bead in the dunes of abu dhabi. Tough job to get it re-seated in the sand and heat. I wouldn't recommend doing that of you can avoid it😂 Running 10lbs psi but bottomless sand is different than rock wheeling. Personally I run RRW beadlocks that weigh 26lbs (same as stock alloys) as a pop-out can very easily mean rolling... And rolling.... And rolling

So for road tires everybody knows that all-season tires aren't. The cold temperatures causes the rubber to "glass transition" and the lugs fail confirm or grip into whatever surface you're on. (true winter compounds like this will "melt" in the summer on the highway) Now I realize that dedicated winter off road tires are not available in North America, let alone road legal. But I'm curious why I see off-road channels confused at their summer mud tires helplessly thrashing in the snow. Shouldn't this kind of knowledge have percolated over? I never see anyone complaining about the lack of dedicated winter off-road tires, so I assume they think their existing tires are appropriate.

I had a set of factory wheels media blasted before PC a long time ago and told them to go HEAVY on them. Ended up with a weird textured bead area and being the biggest pain in the A$$ to get tires off those things. Tire shop broke a machine trying to get a set of 33"s off of a 16" wheel. I could've pulled the cores on those and wheeled all day no doubt. Not at all shocked that those little ridges make big a difference.

Listened through this 2x, but didn't notice the situation, where you are low psi (not street pressure) and you spin the tires to 'heat' the compound, its possible the tire would rotate on the wheel itself. If you have some kind of balancing on the wheel, its now out of balance. What the clamping ring of the beadlock, its very minimal that the tire would rotate on the rim. So dynamic balancing would be sufficient with any wheel, more so for the basic type of wheel, non-beadlock, as the tire rotates, it becomes more balanced.
@mikee2290

Makes sense you didn't lose your bead since you were spinning in the snow (low resistance). Now go ahead run the same PSI in the dry rocks where the resistance and forces on the tire will be much higher. You don't need a bead-grip wheel to save money...you can use duct tape.

I ran gorilla tape beadlocks. Basically building up the bead keeper. Ran them for years and never had a blown bead. My tire shop buddy couldn't break the bead when I had a nail. I had to build a drive on bead breaker. Do the tires still spin on the wheel with your setup? That's my issue and when I'm at super low psi and snow wheeling.

I think it comes to daily hybrid driver or fullon rockcrawling. I love to just ha e the gear with me and air down my daily driver and just go home and to work the next day only airing up again. This is hard doing road legal in Norway with beadlocks. And a lot of hassel when changing or fixing tires. Beadlocks would damage and rip up the hole sidewall of the tire if you are hammering it and lot of traction. While the methodwheels wil eventually slip. Easier to get the tire on with some startgass and a lighter To wide of a rim and in combination of sidewallstrenght and design of the tire it comes of easier then the right combo with a smaller width and a well tested tire.
