About yesterday (January 27th, 2024), someone said: “You’d have to have been there to see how incredible and powerful it was”…and they’re right.
Friends marching alongside each other, sisters, boyfriends and their girlfriends, husbands with their wives, colleagues, allies, activists. Women. So many, diverse, fierce women.
It’s hard to explain these pivotal moments in history, when we’re united against a vice that is killing society, quite literally. Which is why, it’s important that we show up when we are calling for change. I’ve summarized my thoughts in this video, moments after returning from the #TotalShutdownKenya march, protesting alongside thousands, against the rising cases of #femicide in our country.
But there is still so much to say and do and little being done to bring perpetrators to book.
Some quick actions you can take:
1. Please follow some of these organizations to learn more about the next steps following yesterdays protest:
@usikimye_
@feministsinkenya
Amnesty International Kenya
(Share more where possible)
2. Here are some resources for shelters and helplines dealing with cases of GBV:
National Hotline: 1195
Action Aid Kenya: 0707612592
Childline Kenya: 116
Aunty Jane: 0800721530
3. Categorically condemn any narrative and vitriol that enables these murders. Check your friends, colleagues, family members if and when there is any tone that implies that this is ok. And
4. Stop killing us
