The Vietnam Experience

Күн бұрын

James “Sneaky” White enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1960 and served as a machine gunner until 1964. Enamored with aviation, White reelisted and, after years of training, deployed to Vietnam in 1966 with HMM-262. On March 21, 1967, while serving aboard a CH-46, he desinguished himself in combat while inserting a Marine recon team and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. After completing his tour, he left the Marine Corps and joined the Army to pursue an opportunity to become a pilot. But, due to an administrative error, White would spend three months in Vietnam as a rifleman before being plucked from the jungle and redirected back to the aviation program. He graduated from training and returned to Vietnam for a third time, flying combat missions in support of Special Forces and MACV-SOG, where would earn a Silver Star.

The “9th Purple Heart” comment was a running joke between James White and Billy Waugh. Billy did NOT receive a 9th Purple Heart for being wounded that day. He did, however, earn eight during a career that spanned from the Korean War into the War on Terror.

Shit I had 3 technically 6 but the USMC stopped issuing them from IED’s knocking you out cold and didn’t matter 1-6 minutes being out cold with a severe TBI SO I left 6 1/2 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan after getting seriously wounded last time. But no one would walk near me or ride in humvees with me or the 4 seat side by sides because I was blown up 16 times through all tours. The guys made me a shirt and a patch for my cammies that said ( SHIT MAGNET ) HAHAHAHA LOL

Anyone interested in more in depth info on Billy Waugh should read, or listen to the audiobook, by Annie Jacobson called “Surprise, Kill, Vanish.” She goes in depth with Billy about a lot of his exploits. She took him back to Vietnam to meet a former commander of the NVA he used to be at war with. It was the first time in his life that Billy had gone on a trip that wasn’t for the US military or CIA.

When I was a young sergeant, I was assigned to Gabriel attachment with the six special forces group and one day they called us over to the hand and hand pit and there stood Billy wall, my introduction to Billy. I had no idea who he was so the first thing he said to me was have you ever been kicked in the armpit and I said why do I have the feeling? I’m gonna be kicked in the armpit and he did and I brought me to my knees that was by introduction to Billy Waugh. So I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense or misspelled words, but I don’t type it. I just speak on the bike thank you.

Billy Waugh is probably the biggest legend in Agency history. There’s a story Joe Teti tells him about coming across Billy Waugh overseas in a hotel bar, it’s a great little story. It’s on Julian Dorey’s podcast if you haven’t heard it yet.

Being shot in the ass is serious it not only hurts but can be just a flesh wound or permanently disableing, potentially fatal wound , depends on a matter of millimeters. Like many war stories this told in a humorous manner but is a deadly serious narrative.
