Before & After Video: • GH5: Cinematic Color G...
In this video I’ll be discussing 2 main Cinematic Color Grading secrets that rarely filmmakers talk about.
I’ll be using the music video “Get on” I shot and Directed as a case study to talk about those secrets.
I’ll finally be sharing some details about the GH5 camera settings and more secrets on how I work on it in post.
Stay tuned as I’ll be releasing a third video focused on post production.

I am always drawn in by your videos, but this one takes the cake. Usually people complain about using vlog 60fps 4:2:0 8 bit but you just showed how beautiful that footage can look. There are a few you tubers that are good, but right now, you have taught me more in 6 min than what others have been trying to teach for years. Amazed right now!

@@THEDPJOURNEY Thank you so much for the reply. I understand that cameras and lenses are just tools such as pencils and brushes for painters. As a beginner, before buying the tools, I do surfing, watch youtube getting more info about cameras and lens, try to find out the one may be really suitable for me. But, I am always curious about how the proffesionals film makers like you buying the cameras and lenses... Have you tried them out before hand? Do you read/watch the test reports? What is main point you picked GH5 over the more expensive S1H, etc?

Hey man, love the quality of your videos. Just quick question: you shooting 4k 60p 8bit 4:2:0 in v-log? don't you get a lot of banding using these settings??
@THEDPJOURNEY
@THEDPJOURNEY 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly avoid shooting soft gradients to avoid such problems. As you can see all my shoots are on the gritty or details oriented, rather than on the minimalist style. So maybe there was banding, but it's almost impossible to see in my style of shooting. Hope that helps
@DavidHorizonFilms
@DavidHorizonFilms 4 жыл бұрын
What do you mean with avoid shooting soft gradients? can you really control that?
@THEDPJOURNEY

I mean your subject wouldnt have a gradient, like a sky or similar. Where this would risk showing banding. But again it's a limitation in all displays in all cases which are still 8bit standard.

Awesome video full of great info! Having shot much film and digital in my career, I'm curious about the choice to shoot 30fps and not a more (subjective comment) "film like" look of 23.98? You will get slightly better compression at 23.98 since there is less data overhead at this frame rate. But seriously that is the best looking GH5 video I have seen, and great video with all the post to live demos.
@THEDPJOURNEY
@THEDPJOURNEY 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Marc... actually this choice is to confirm it to 24, this way it offers a rather slower than reality feel yet not slow mo... I'm actually working on an episode now to talk about it in details

When you are filming on the GH5 (or any camera) how can you tell what your IRE is while you are shooting? I do shoot with Histogram on, but not sure if that correlates to IRE, like if the graphs are squished off to either side.

Awesome content, you clearly know your craft and your videos talk for yourself ! I was wondering about the light setup (ring scene and car scene especially), will you do a behind the scenes for this? It's, in my opinion, the most interesting and the key point of the look you succeeded to achieve in this video. Could you share the exact gear list used? Just keep the good work, bell button activated ;)

Are you able to share you thoughts on side stepping the Sigma lens and using instead a LUMIX G LEICA DG VARIO-SUMMILUX 10-25mm, F1.7 ASPH. Lens? I would like as little equipment as possible if I need not use a Speed Booster I am very happy not using it. You thoughts please? Thank you (THANK YYOU VERY VERY MUCH FOR ANSWERING MY EMAIL!)

Hey Garfield... the 10-25 looks like a great lens. But the focal length you get from the 18-35 is preferred for my type of shooting. 10-25 is too wide. Also it’s a lot more expensive if you’re on a budget.

The dynamic range is based on V-log. Each other color profile would have a lower DR. And each would need a special workflow.

Yeah exactly... maybe you can transition from cool to warm tones vs switching between them. Especially that it’s all happening in the same place you know. Like if it’s happening in 2 different locations then maybe the outdoor is warm and indoor is cool. But if all happening in the same spot, then maybe the change of color is to show progress. To give meaning to that color change rather than a simple personal choice.
