THE DP JOURNEY putting in your time was absolutely worth it. I think zhere are lot of color grading videos out there focusing on the software and functions while failing to give you an overview of the process and the steps and where in the process you would do for example that white balance correction etc. Next video i would like to see is about your lighting process and gear

I totally agree... incredible workflow summary that I'm now implementing myself. 100% knowledge, as usual. I do know this is "grading tutorial" neverless I'd highly recommend (only) mentioning the first part which is colour correction for a couple secs. Why? Simply because people buy LUT packs and throw them onto the timeline thinking this is a guarantee of everything looking similiar and as we know.. it's more often over-used. Ps. the sooner people move to nodes, the better. :) (coming from a guy that was addicted to Premiere)
@THEDPJOURNEY5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much buddy for your awesome support! Yeah I know, people do think LUTs are a 1 click make awesome solution! WHile in some rare cases it could be... if you're lucky. But in most cases you need to tweak things your way. Yeah in an ideal world, we would all be grading with a node based system :)

Nice to have explanations on why things are done the way they are. + the material you shot for this video is so well nailed in the shoot that the grade lifts it to new level. If you have time to go more in depth on the lighting and exposure, WB, makeup etc. you used in the shoot I would be glad to hear about it. Cheers!

Incredible. Had no idea layers functioned like this. I'll be returning to this video many times for reference. The timestamps are genius. Do you have any experience with leeming luts? I used it with HLG on GH5 alot. Recently I switched to natural with noise and sharpen at minus 5 for quick youtube video turnaround. However I'm considering using HLG as my log profile with leeming for client and narrative works

@@THEDPJOURNEY thank you for your reply. I use HLG simply because I haven't unlocked the vlog on GH5. I've been binge watching your channel for almost an hour. Awesome stuff here. I had to hit the subscribe button. I have one question concerning adjustment layers. I was told many moons ago that adding a lot of video tracks makes puts more work on the CPU. I'm wondering if this could be a potential drawback to stacking effects the way you've shown here instead of placing most of them on one track where possible. That aside I like how you laid things out here. 👍
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a LOT man for the kind comment and support. Happy to have you onboard! About the layers... I honestly havent tested it, but i strongly belive it won't make much of a difference unless you're adding like 50 of them. It all depends on what's in them, test it yourself if you want, cuz that depends on the machine. Try to export a video without layer, then stack 10-20 empty layers and export again. if you find a difference then it'd be your answer. I personally didn't feel anything

There's one crucial thing to remember. The LUT should always be the last node/layer. A LUT is a destructive adjustment, so if highlights clips, you can't recover them after that. So if you apply the LUT on the first node/layer and it clips your highlights or shadows, you won't be able to recover them in a later node/layer. Other than that I really enjoyed your video 😊
@THEDPJOURNEY5 жыл бұрын
Hey Birk, I didn't use the word "Destructive" as it's rather "Restrictive". Destructive is when you lose the information while still grading, but the info is still there for you to fix with layers under it. I surely understand what you mean though... That's why i was saying about having other layers below it to adjust the range you wanna work within, everything above is the range you're ok with. In the end this template is not a rule but a method that you can apply in the best way that works with your style. Thanks again for the contribution. Would love to hear from you again.
@pocabromaproduccions24 жыл бұрын
I LOVE your videos. I think that they are very stylish and informative. Good job! But there's something in this video that has a conflict for what I understood: that all the contrast and exposure tweaks had to be done BEFORE the lut, NEVER AFTER, because it breaks the quality of the image. I'm sorry I can not be more technical about that, but it makes sense to me and my workflow (that is so similar to yours). Thank you!

Thank you so much for the comment and your support! The Layers when have almost no effect on the speed or processor... the only think that affects that is what you load onto them. Still recommend this workflow in fcp? I’m looking for ways to step my grading and treatment of footage and one of my go to things is using cinematch to convert vlog to arri log. That would be the first step right? Or I could still add adjustments before the cinematch conversion if needed and work my way up to the arri log 709 lut?
@THEDPJOURNEY2 ай бұрын

Thank you, I have been watching a lot of your videos lately. I have one problem with this workflow. If I for some reason need to make adjustments to the length of the clips under all those layers, the layers on top will be messed up and off set. I don't know if you mean, but if you do, do you have a solution for that?
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
I assume you use Premiere right? That might be more problematic there.. but on FCPX it works fine
@javrri72124 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY Thanks for answering! No, I use fcpx. I don't know if I managed to explain it right. Let say I have edited a project, and start to color grade, stack up layers on top like you do, that covers various amounts of clips. Then I notice something in the video that I want to edit out, so I quickly cut that out, this leads to the clip being shorter, but the layers on top won't be shortened, so this leads to the too long layers on top push everything askew. Also, if one of the layers I have on top spans over the whole project, the whole project needs to be rendered again. I don't know if this is some user error or if it is because fcpx doesn't have native support for adjustment layers.

Can you make a video on this for Davinci resolve
@nicolaska17615 жыл бұрын
The most effective way is to work with Davinci Resolve at least for Color Grading, and actually nodes are not that hard to understand And Davinci is FREE ! So no excuses 😊

But I prefer FCPX speed and workflow

Agree for sure abotu how pro Davinci is.... but again, as mentioned, we're not colorists, we're more cinematographer who found themselves compelled to edit and grade. So i tried to find the easiest way to do both without the distraction from our main focus: cinematography. I do have plans to learn Davinci actaully.. already have the full version. Thanks again for your feedbak

Don't forget that since DR15 a lot of features and OFX effects are studio only + under the hood stuff ( studio version is faster in making optimized media, cache, rendering, exports ... ) The difference has become so big, it's actually smarter to buy it instead of sticking to the free version.

Why would you use letterbox bars instead of changing the timeline/project resolution to achieve the desired aspect ratio?
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
Because many times, especially in commercial work, I need to output to other formats for social like 1X1 or even portrait. So I keep 1 master edit basically to export to all those. But if I know it’ll only be 1 CinemaScope delivery, then I crop it as you said.

@@THEDPJOURNEY in that case, it makes sense! It's just that many people use those black bars even if it would make more sense simply to use a different resolution in their project timeline.. Many times I've cursed those bars when watching a video on my phone, which have a wider aspect ratio than 16:9. Anyway, thanks for a top quality videos and greetings from Finland! Keep 'em coming!

do you need to convert vlogL to rec709?
@THEDPJOURNEY3 жыл бұрын
not at all.. 709 is more like a monitoring color space, not a look
