I remember finding her in an Mtv book that outlined the famous Unplugged concert. How she was dying inside as a 'rock star' of 10,000 Maniacs fame. She walked away, cut her hair and blew away all expectations. Natalie Merchant emerged alone. Thanks for posting this during the pandemic induced lonely times.

Love Natalie solo, but imo, her best work was with the Maniacs and the late, great Rob Buck.

@@underock4 I respectfully disagree Kevin. Tigerlily outsold any 10kM record by a longshot, and it wasn't by accident. Natalie made Rob and the band great; wasn't the other way around.

@@underock4 Of course sir. Don't get me wrong, love 10,000 Maniacs. Maybe it's just my age coming through, but lately I've really been wearing out Natalie's solo work -- not that it'll ever wear out. Timeless stuff from both era's we're fortunate to have. I might be setting spotify play records on Leave Your Sleep lately. :) Stay safe my friend.

Thanks for posting this. Through a stroke of luck I went to this concert but never saw the recording. I waited outside the venue for maybe an hour afterwards to say hi to her. When she walked out I was able to speak to her for a second and she responded “thank you.” As soon as she got in the town car and drove off I realized I was freezing cold but it was worth it.

I am so astonished that this woman exists; that she has endured - why is it such a surprise to me? - through all the storms of a world that has gone, I’ll readily admit, mad. And she continues. And continues to come out allow you to dream, and dance, and sing, and somehow, to be hopeful. I have usually gotten this from literature. But, in Natalie’s case, I can sit back and let the goosepimples ripple my sensuous person. And make sweet wine of my intellect: she recommences and picks up the threads of my cerebral and soulful self that fell to the floor by some worldly inanity, and re-weaves them into sense and beauty. I wanted to somehow do justice to her for what she means to me, so forgive me for the wordiness.

Talented, one of the best of her era, but, shouldn't be taking peoples cellphones away during her shows just because some personal ideal she has about today's society not enjoying moments in a concert for wanting to capture it on a "smartphone" (which I agree to a degree). It's a despotic undemocratic attitude of the great artist.
@Hanzyscure3 жыл бұрын
People recording with cellphones are quite annoying and distract the band. Society is dumber since cellphones became the new drug.
@Villazento3 жыл бұрын
@@Hanzyscure She still has no right to demand people to put their cellphones down. If you're that insecure about modern society posting videos on KZbin of you in your concerts don't do shows anymore, don't be a part of this pop culture.

Leaving the maniacs is the only way she can make this kind of music because with the maniacs she's playing with a bunch of veteran musicians. Her solo stuff is mediocre at best. Her best work is definitely with the maniacs whether she wants to admit that or not. There's a reason there's a louder cheer whenever she covers Maniacs song.
@TheKavvz4 жыл бұрын
Natalie doesn't cover 10,000 Maniacs songs. They still are and always will be her songs, she either wrote outright or co-wrote every single one. People go crazy when she does those songs because it brings people back to a different time. A wonderful time. It's nostalgic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZC9fWuMj5iHapI&ab_channel=CottonAlley was every bit as good to me as a 10,000 Maniacs show from the past. That's just me though; people like what they like. Not that I don't like 10,000 Maniacs, of course I do. Stay safe.
@brother-dre3 жыл бұрын
@@TheKavvz Agreed. Her solo work is more raw, more seasoned. Some fans seem to prefer that artists ‘stay put’ creatively. However, most artists need to explore and expand.
