@PeterAtkinson3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Should be middle of the road on the ranking in my opinion, but the intro is incredible.
@henreebee65613 жыл бұрын
It’s always been mysterious to me how sad the intro is, and after thinking about it, I’ve come to this conclusion: it’s sad because it’s about a life of unfulfilled wishes and dreams. Carl and Ellie dreamed of having kids, they weren’t able to, but they had each other so they were able to find happiness in being together all those years. Carl wanted to give Ellie the adventure that she always wanted, but then she got sick and died before that wish was fulfilled as well. Now Carl and Ellie didn’t get to realize their biggest dreams, and they don’t even have each other anymore, which was the last big reason they really enjoyed life. It’s why Carl is a bitter old man when he meets Russell. It’s even sadder because they were good people who deserved to realize their dreams, but weren’t allowed to, and that’s so brutal yet true to life. Pixar and especially Pete Docter have such a keen ability to dig into what it means to be human.

I think the rest of the movie has a lot of substance as well. It’s about adoption- that you choose who your family is, and also letting go and moving on. I don’t think it boils down to just “fun.” But I agree the beginning is the best part.

I still recall so vividly sitting in the cinema for this movie and as Carl floats the balloon into Ellie's hospital room and the music quiets down to just a somber and gentle piano - the sound of everyone in the audience crying became a part of the score for me. That sound and feeling of a crowd of people having a collective release of emotion like that is forever beautifully - and intrinsically - tied to that music and moment for me.

My favourite scene is when he walks into the house in Paradise Falls, after telling off Russell, and he realizes how empty it is. The house is a disaster, the life is gone from everything, and most importantly he sits in his chair alone. He looks through that book and realizes how empty this victory is. And one last time, as I imagine she has done throughout their life together, Ellie saves his soul and gives him a reason to keep going. He crosses his heart and carries on. Nothing happened, but he has completely changed.

There is so much more to this movie than I remember as a kid. Absolutely beautiful for all the reasons you guys said, and easily the "most improved" movie for me so far on this rewatch. That said, I find that it also drags in spots, I think Carl's adversarial relationship with... well everyone, is necessary for his development, but it lasts too long and is kind of a bummer, tbh. Plus the South America setting isn't super creative (although the way they get there is, for sure) Liked it a lot, but I don't have the heart to let it dethrone the upper echelon. My list is: 1. The Incredibles 2. Monster's Inc. 3. Ratatouille 4. Wall-E 5. Finding Nemo 6. Toy Story 2 7. Toy Story 3 8. Up 9. Toy Story 4 10. Toy Story 11. A Bug's Life 12. Cars

Hot take: Up is the beginning of Pixar's downfall. Yes, Toy Story 3 came just a year later (TS2>TS3 anyway), but Pixar never have reached their prime again. IMO, the prime Pixar movies are TS2 - WALL-E, because they were able to not just be critical darlings, but also balanced that by having a ton of joy, heart and sense of adventure in them. And starting with Up and even with TS3, Pixar have relied too heavily on being emotional and downbeat, like with Brave, Good Dinosaur, Inside Out. Or if not that, they've churned out really disappointing sequels, like Cars 2 (shit), Finding Dory (terrible), Incredibles 2 (again, terrible), and Toy Story 4 (I never thought a movie could piss me off more than The Last Jedi, but here it is), or have been forgettable and not really added anything intriguing like Cars 3 or Monsters University. And as for the movie itself, the only good chunk is the amazing first 5 minutes, perhaps the greatest beginning to a movie ever, if not definitely one of the greatest. However, the characters aren't memorable or likeable, the plot isn't anything unique like other Pixar movies, the pace plods along, and the worldbuilding isn't creative or imaginative like previous Pixar movies. IMO, Coco is the only Pixar movie since TS3 that belongs with Pixar's classics.
@nikkieg1583 жыл бұрын
Some really odd takes here. You say Toy Story 3 relies heavily on emotion when it only does in the third act and for good reason- it was supposed to be the end. On the other hand, one could argue that Toy Story 2 does it way more (love the move, don't get me wrong). The entire crux of the movie (choosing Andy over the museum) requires the audience to be emotionally invested in the relationship between Andy and his toys, and to empathize with Jessie. Furthermore, the suggestion that the characters in Up aren't likeable or memorable is silly. Carl may not soften up until the end, but Russell is a sweet boy (irritating or no), and everyone loves Dug and Kevin. All of whom have memorable moments, to be sure.
