Thanks for posting this Video of the Bridges that were effected, The fact that while peoples homes were affected, is very bad, having these bridges knocked out of use, will affect anybody in the area and anyone trying to travel through the area for quite some time. It will be interesting to see if they will be able to salvage any of the bridges pilings and footings, if they can that will go along way in getting these bridges back up and in operation much quicker. Thank you this is a excellent video, something that is overlooked by the news media, and with no sound makes it very sobering......forces you to take in the magnitude of this disaster.

There was a blurb on the news tonight stating the state of MI would not allow lowering the water level to do repairs and modifications to the dam due to a rare clam that lives in the lake. I guess it doesn't live there anymore. Good job Michigan.

@@mcearl8073 The dams owner was not at fault in the failure it was the state of Michigan under Governor Whitmer, the dams owner had lowered the lake for safety reasons but were forced by the state to raise the lake level back up to normal in May all because of the death of thousands of endangered freshwater mussels. So the mussels are more important than the people. Funny how she and others were in such a hurry to play the blame game away from their own self.

Greetings from Oklahoma, you all have my thoughts & condolences. Here in Muskogee we had our flood last year at the same time but it wasn't anything like this. The Arkansas reached 46' (if my memory serves correctly) and devastated a lot of farm lands, homes, and crops -- even flooded the whole town of Webbers Falls; everything is back to normal around here. But this, what do you do? What's the answer ya know? There are no words I can give. God bless each of you!

Marc Reisner’s book, Cadillac Dessert is an exceptional read about the history of dams, the Army Corp of Engineers, pork barrel politics and describes the financial cost, construction and maintenance of these behemoths! I don’t understand why the government agrees to foot the bill with subsidies for these dams and then allows the private companies to passively maintain them while downstream lives are at risk. The utility company owners, government officials and anyone who enabled these corrupt endeavors should foot the bill before any money from FEMA or insurance companies are used! Dams are the second most wasteful government project second to highway systems!

Someone watching the water level should have figured out the failure long before they failed and warned the people living below the dams. State Governers need to be actively working on these issues before they become this bad.

Whats wrong in the pics No riprap below fill line whole slope needed rip rap Dam top needed to be min 10 feet above spillway Spillway needed to be wide enough to take hours to erode away slowly releasing water Spillway needed clear run to river this spillway took out forest which clogged bridge overpasses and spillways down stream causing more failures Reservoirs HUGELY silted up drastically reducing capacity requiring them to be kept filled to brim at all times to have adequate flow for turbines No armoring around spillways allowing back flow to rip apart dam Road THROUGH reservoir created bottle neck which washed out costing millions more to fix Bridges downstream needed to be higher and wider instead of cheap low embankments with minimal bridge to resist flood damage and allow flooding to stay in stream Dam Berms dangerously narrow needed to be much wider so over topping didn't mean instant failure Gated spillways needed to be lower to allow greater controlled discharge Note this is third flood in as many decades LESSONS ARE NOT BEING LEARNED since US taxpayer foot bill every time NOTE This is historically Red State, like every Red State allows irresponsible development that US taxpayers REPEATEDLY pay to fix

I think you need to do a bit more research as I did read an article the night this happened saying they had been cited on how many safety issues this I don't think is the entire story. It's a shame the residents and whoever got on the owner for lowering the water level when they did need to do some work and have a bigger spillway from what I read in the article. IMO this lake was made decades ago for recreation, fishing and tourism and should just be left alone maybe teach those that obviously didn't think the safety issues were worth lowering the level to do repairs. I really hope they use brains and are reasonable when deciding on what to do to clean up the mess. People should not be so greedy. Mother Nature is trying to tell us something time we listen.

State government is responsible for this. From the description above. In October 2018, and again in mid-November 2019, the dam's operator lowered the water level, in what it called "a safety move." It said it had requested a permit to lower the level from Michigan's EGLE, a permit that was not issued. The operator said it acted “due to concern for the safety of its operators and the downstream community,” and went on to sue EGLE in federal court, alleging "its safety concerns were paramount." In April 2020, Michigan's EGLE sued Boyce, alleging it had lowered the water level without permission in 2018 and 2019, killing thousands of freshwater mussels. So the owner of the dam, Boyce, sought a permit from the state to lower the water level for safety reasons and the state ignored his request. And the state is more concerned about barnacles than human lives. That is how Demoncrat (communists) politicians operate. I would not be surprised if this is part of their Agenda 21 madness.

When weather forecasts call for unusually large amounts of rainfall, they start releasing the water in the lake early so there will be more available capture area when the rains come. 500 year flood ?? Before the dams were built, was Midland called "Lake Midland" ?? What was the purpose of creating Lake Wixom and Lake Sanford in the first place ?? Those dams weren't constructed 500 years ago. Some dam designer should've made them taller and stronger. Hopefully federal assistance will arrive soon! It is apparent that rivers & lakes weren't properly maintained. Plenty of silt accumulates but state agencies just limit our water access. In Texas we had major flooding in the mid 1970s & again in the kid 1980s. Instead of continuing to dredge the rivers & tributaries to ensure drainage more homes were built taking away the land's ability to absorb. During the last drought instead of using money to clean out lakes & rivers, a move that could have cleaned out guerilla & those invasive mussels, our legislature Dr died we needed a new reservoir. Texas lakes are forced to let water downstream. No matter if there is flooding downstream of not. Hurricane Harvey caused flooding in places that never flooded before because neighborhoods have filled pasture land. I hope all these floods will remind those who work for the taxpayers to dredge rivers, clear banks clean out the lake bottoms, & ensure proper drainage for hard rains. Until the places moving our water are maintained we can look forward to more flooding. More rebuilding of roads & more flood insurance pay outs. The Army Corp of Engineers need to be able to prove that flood walls work properly & lake levels lowered prior to hurricanes. The mantaince failures are proof in MI. We had some failures here in Texas causing unneeded flooding. This was in Dec 2013 or 2014. Still the dimes have not been repaired. Now there are more neighborhoods being built in that area, guaranteeing more flooding & homes with no flood insurance.

This is about sediment I think. We don’t have smart land management policy that can mitigate all the run-off produced by farming in once-forested, poorly drained soil. The Lake was getting shallower and shallower with the sediment build-up, lowering capacity, and then you have a major flood and this happens.

It might be a good thing in the long run if they let the river follow its natural course and leave the dams as they are. Meanwhile I would be planting sweet corn in that exposed lake bottom. Might get some 14 foot corn plants.

Will they rebuild these dams? If so, why, if they weren't producing electricity and don't serve a flood control purpose?

Why is it that when there are dam failures or near failures they don't fully open the flood gates untill it's actually to late. Aren't they supposed to have people that can calculate how a certain amount of rainfall is going to affect their lake so they better open the gates now to avoid disaster?

It could have been a lot worse now the state and county will need to build a replacement. While they are doing that you can dredge or remove all that dirt from behind the same so the new lake is deeper.

If u want to see real water devastation, look at Japan, the tsunami, that hit some cities , wiped them off the map, even including the ones with sea walls.
