Let's give a big shout out to the Michigan state officials for letting this mess happen. No surprise a 96 year old dam collapsed. They are supposed to be removed after 50 years. The federal government pulled away from this dam in 2018 giving the state responsibility for its oversight. Sighting habitat protection as one of the reasons for not updating it. The other was complaints from homeowners on the lake. Whenever the water level was lowered the boats were in the mud. So everyone downstream suffered from mismanagement all around upstream. Golf clap to the idiots we are electing to run out state governments and country.

As an armchair viewer it looks like this dams emergency spillway shouldn't have been made with earth but instead a concrete emergency spillway of adequate size. AND why were the lakes allowed to get so full that they overtopped the emergency spillway to begin with (don't they monitor water level and weather?) Which brings up another point, why was the actual concrete structure (Hydro plant and spillway) so small compared to the width of the Whole dam. Maybe if and when it's rebuilt maybe it'll be built better. There's thousands of dams like this one throughout the United States just waiting to fail. I feel for the people that were affected by this man made disaster. People of Sanford and Midland don't believe them when they say it couldn't have been avoided...It was built in 1925 so they've had time to correct it's deficiencies. as a matter of fact the two dams that failed were given "High Risk" rating in 2018 buy the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Maybe our Government should actually do something about "infrastructure" instead of just making talking points for their next election.

Niobrara, at the junction of the Missouri and Niobrara rivers, had heavy damage in the low lying areas, including a cafe we used to go to when the kids were younger, was gutted by the flood waters and huge chunks of ice. But now, it's rebuilt and back in business. But it won't be the same FlyWay Inn I remember. But they are back and thriving. I hope this recent devastation, the people can rebuild as well and thrive successfully.

These dams were destroyed on purpose. Look at the flood control structures they should be wide open and they are closed. I asked around it turns out the State Attorney General had sued the owners of the Damned in order to prevent them from doing the normal winter drawdown to prepare for spring time floods. They say it's to protect freshwater mussels they had to keep the Reservoir full to protect the mussels. This is what happens when lawyers get involved with engineering they know nothing about. Do you really think that this state attorney general and the governor will accept responsibility for what they have done with their paperwork. The court order is there in the file someplace. The damn operators fought it in court. It's time to bring these demon crap politicians to Justice. Someone did this on purpose 100 year dams donot not just fail all of a sudden. Look at the videos of all of these dams they flood control structures are up they should be down and flowing green deep water not a waterfall.
