Very interesting seeing the bedrock foundation in the areas of the dam that were washed out. That makes it a bit more apparent why the dam was positioned here in the first place. Great use of the drone for getting footage like this. Still amazing that there has been no loss of life reported.

Let's give a big shout out to the Michigan state officials for letting this mess happen. No surprise a 96 year old dam collapsed. They are supposed to be removed after 50 years. The federal government pulled away from this dam in 2018 giving the state responsibility for its oversight. Sighting habitat protection as one of the reasons for not updating it. The other was complaints from homeowners on the lake. Whenever the water level was lowered the boats were in the mud. So everyone downstream suffered from mismanagement all around upstream. Golf clap to the idiots we are electing to run out state governments and country.

As an armchair viewer it looks like this dams emergency spillway shouldn't have been made with earth but instead a concrete emergency spillway of adequate size. AND why were the lakes allowed to get so full that they overtopped the emergency spillway to begin with (don't they monitor water level and weather?) Which brings up another point, why was the actual concrete structure (Hydro plant and spillway) so small compared to the width of the Whole dam. Maybe if and when it's rebuilt maybe it'll be built better. There's thousands of dams like this one throughout the United States just waiting to fail. I feel for the people that were affected by this man made disaster. People of Sanford and Midland don't believe them when they say it couldn't have been avoided...It was built in 1925 so they've had time to correct it's deficiencies. as a matter of fact the two dams that failed were given "High Risk" rating in 2018 buy the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Maybe our Government should actually do something about "infrastructure" instead of just making talking points for their next election.

@@AustinTechAuthority nothing here happened due to lack of upkeep. The dams were good the planing of them was not since they did not factor in enough space in the spillway for a massive flood. If you bothered to pull your head out of your ass you would know that for every house flooded in this flood there are likely thousands upon thousands that have not flooded due to being protected by dams! There are currently over 84,000 dams in the US so acting like they're all dangerous and going to collapse is f****** stupid childish moronic and just proves that you're a dipshit!

Behind every damn is a potential flood these stamps were made a hundred years ago when there was no development there they are flood control structures and hydroelectric Dam. They would have lasted another hundred years if the Attorney General had not ordered that the Lakes not be drawn down for the winter time. Normally they draw the Lakes Down in advance of spring so that they do not flood. This year a court order prevented the drawdown this is the effect of lawyers getting involved that no more about everything than anybody else. Time to fire the governor and the Attorney General they did this on purpose

I'd love to see if these areas bounce back like some of the devastated areas of Nebraska from March of 2019's flooding. I've been in these places and they've recovered nicely, with some differences. Niobrara, at the junction of the Missouri and Niobrara rivers, had heavy damage in the low lying areas, including a cafe we used to go to when the kids were younger, was gutted by the flood waters and huge chunks of ice. But now, it's rebuilt and back in business. But it won't be the same FlyWay Inn I remember. But they are back and thriving. I hope this recent devastation, the people can rebuild as well and thrive successfully.

These dams were destroyed on purpose. Look at the flood control structures they should be wide open and they are closed. I asked around it turns out the State Attorney General had sued the owners of the Damned in order to prevent them from doing the normal winter drawdown to prepare for spring time floods. They say it's to protect freshwater mussels they had to keep the Reservoir full to protect the mussels. This is what happens when lawyers get involved with engineering they know nothing about. Do you really think that this state attorney general and the governor will accept responsibility for what they have done with their paperwork. The court order is there in the file someplace. The damn operators fought it in court. It's time to bring these demon crap politicians to Justice. Someone did this on purpose 100 year dams donot not just fail all of a sudden. Look at the videos of all of these dams they flood control structures are up they should be down and flowing green deep water not a waterfall.

Really need to stop saying 500year or 1000year... actually due to our heat trapping gasses, mainly co2, odds are there will be one next year also. Maybe once you do, support for a New deal style infrastructure of the state. Or... enjoy the continued flooding. Prayers aren't doing anything.

You'd better land in the real world and realize what our sun is up to. The sun is in charge , not CO2.

500 yr. event? Please, can still see the tree trunks from the artificial lake. How old is the dam? Less than 100 yrs I bet. City water authority responsible. Take them to the cleaners.

Study study study, and failure after failure.you people need to learn what works and what doesn't,but most important, get off your asses and do the work to prevent failures like this..should have designed the drain system wide enough to allow the debris to flow through without jamming up....bad designed,,,,should have had a person on that dam 24_7 clearing the debris with machine..turn the old lake bed into a track for 4by4s and motocross racing... And make money...sence the money is what caused it all....greedy people want to own things they don't know how to manage..that is the root cause of failures...

Why would you want to spend money on infrastructure rather than give big tax breaks to corporations and millionaires?

An earth dam should be good for the earth. Why wasn't it made from stronger dirt?
