As a former peacekeeper, I was deployed three times in the Middle East. My first tour was in 1973 while the IDF still had the Egyptian 3rd Army surrounded. I have met many members of the IDF during that tour and finally started to understand the underlying issues of what we in the Western world call the Middle East. During my second tour in 1980, I was stationed Quneitra Syria. My radio detachment members and I used to cross the border into Israel every other day on foot. I had the opportunity to have a guided visit of the valley of tears by an IDF major who in 73 was a tank commander during that battle. It’s was very impressive and quite an eye opener. During that tour, I learned more than ever because I dealt with both Israeli and Syrian soldiers. As you know that was the period when Haffez Assad considered Lebanon as part of Syria. The civil war that ensued in Lebanon was the perfect target for the PLO at the time. In the town where I was stationed, Assad declared it a monument to Israeli atrocities (a lie). Right behind our villa, we had a PLO sort of training camp in the former Quneitra hospital. After the border crossing closed at 5pm, we were dependent of the UN HQ in Damascus for help of any kind. We were unarmed, had no vehicle and all we had was a bunker to hide and the PLO used to take pot shots at our villa at least once a week. I spoke with the IDF border guards about our situation and I was assured that we were not in danger and if something happened, they would come to our rescue. They proved it one night, I won’t tell you how. However, this happy moment, proved to me that the IDF, was the best Armed Force in the region. I vividly remember all my interactions with both sides and when I was deployed once again 18 years later, many things had changed for the better. 98/99 was the twenty fifth anniversary of UNDOF, and the memories flooded my mind on the plane on my way to Israel. Once again I had many interactions with the IDF, and thanks to their support and cooperation, it made that tour quite enjoyable. The only shadow was the fact that the war in the Balkans was going full steam and Clinton was bombing the area, sort of ruined our celebrations. I apologize for such a long comment, but my admiration for Israel is boundless. Being surrounded by terrorist organizations, places your country in a do or die situation and that is since 1948. Very few people realize that twenty percent of Israelis are of Arabic descent and are treated as equals. Only Israel would do such a thing. You as a people have understood the meaning of suffering, I have no pity for the supposed Palestinian people, that was created by all the surrounding Arab countries in 1948, and the United Nations have always considered them as refugees while the Arabs themselves made refugees out of them. I place a lot of blame on the UN for what has happened in the area since 1956. Israel has been known as the bully and blamed for things that were never justified. The corporate media is also to blame for a large scale disinformation campaign that to this day is still going on. I not only pray for the hostages, but also for all the soldiers of Israel who freely make the ultimate sacrifice for the survival of their country. My message is simple and it is addressed to all the countries in the area, stop the senseless violence, that fabricated hatred and above all, to quote Mrs Meir,[love your children above anything else and maybe peace will be established when it happens].

Oh my, you have had quite a life so far! I never understood this conflict between Israel and the Middle East countries until I understood in the Biblical how this great rift began. It started with Abraham's offspring, Isaac and Ishmael... and because of the evil unleashed by a human's decision... it has never ended. Hello. Happy New Year from Montreal. I wonder where the hostages are being held at this point, seeing that the IDF has destroyed "some" of the tunnel systems and are discovering more by the day? You would have thought that at some point they would be found, some or all ?? If the IDF is making substantial headway in ferreting out terrorists and destroying their infrastructure, they must be either moving hostages as the IDF approaches, or they are hunkered down somewhere that (They) think will be impenetrable? With the intricate and devious tunnel systems under Gaza, it may take some time before we know where those hostages are, yes? I'm sure they make good shields for Hamas, better than their own citizens, who, by the way, in great numbers, support them. Let us not forget !!
