I work at a Honda Power Equipment dealer, and have already repaired several of these under warranty. I thought the same as you... I'm a fairly big guy, and could probably pull the rope anyway. Nope. The starter rope wants to rip your arm out of it's socket. It's a fairly lengthy process to replace the cam, because the crank shaft has to be removed to get to it. The new engines are overhead valve, but not overhead cam any longer. You have to remove all the parts under the deck, and all the parts on top until you get a nearly bare crank case. Even the cylinder needs to be un-bolted and removed because the cam is under the cylinder. The fastest I've done it so far is 2 1/2 hours, and warranty pays for 1 1/2 hours. I would like to watch a factory tech and see how they came up with that time. I'm hoping there may be a faster method or a trick to save steps. Time will tell, I guess.

Thank you for the insight from a Honda tech’s perspective. I saw on some of the earlier comments that dealerships were not entirely interested in fixing the issue. I wonder if the actual labor time versus the warranty reimbursement is why authorized repair centers are hesitant to take care of this. Thank you for watching! Please like and subscribe for updates. Also, please update the comments if you learn anything else about this.

Thanks for bringing this to light. I just bought a new HRX217 and used it for only 2 mows before the electric start and recoil would not budge upon the 3rd mow. Yeah, it dang near ripped my arm off my shoulder. I already have a torn rotator cuff in that same shoulde so, you can imagine how great that felt when the recoil would not budge halfway thru the pull! The authorized repair shop has tried 4 times to fix it. I am really surprised they didn’t know about this cam issue or that Honda apparently has not told them (or me) about this. I paid $1200 for this POS and I just want my money back. I’ll stick with my 2015 Toro SR which just continues to run and run while starting on the first pull every single time I’ve used it. I will tell the shop about this information in your video and also call Honda to get my money back. Thanks!

Here's an update on my mower. I went back to the authorized repair shop and he said the Honda rep told them about this cam issue just this past Friday. This was after nearly 8 weeks in the shop with no idea how to repair it. I went back to the big box store I got it from and despite it being beyond the 90 day return period, they gave me full store credit. Would have preferred my cash back, but I thought store credit was better than waiting for a repair or engine replacement and then not getting what it's worth in a private sale. This was my very first Honda, so this was about as bad an experience with a new product as you can get. Just glad it is over!

I briefly had an HRM215, excellent machine but the machine wasn't well cared for when I got it and it was exposed to sun and weather where the deck was becoming brittle. I had sold it but the person who bought it from me said it wasn't working correctly, so I bought it back through a free lawn mowing (I sold it for what the lawn mowing costs) and I took it apart, kept the engine and handles and tossed the deck. The engines on those were a GXV140 and the new ones now sport a GCV model of engine, so yes, they did get a little cheaper.

I am an owner of a early HRM 21 inch Honda mower. It’s a metal deck mower and it still runs flawlessly. The only issue was replacing the rear drive wheels and the axle bushings. I had to make my own axle bushing because Honda didn’t have any left in inventory and my bushings work much better than the original. I bought this mower new and plan to keep it going as long as I need it. So far around 30 years of service. There is no comparison between this mower and what Honda sells now.

Exactly the issue I had with my HRX217 that I ordered from Home Depot in May 2023. Initial start was fine & ran it for approx. an hour with no issues. I adjusted the handle height before 2nd use & then tried to pull the cord to start but could only pull it partially out then jammed (like it was caught on something). Took it to local Honda dealer (as I've owned several HRX 217 models over the years & reputable dealer with high quality service personnel imo) to see if maybe there was a quick fix & hopefully nothing serious. Honda Dealer repair mgr. advised that nothing was wrong w/recoil assembly & so no quick fix & likely some type of engine issue. As a result, elected to just return to Home Depot for full refund as not gonna pay $1K for a mower that needs its engine disassembled to try & identify the issue after only 1 hour of use.

You are very fortunate that you could still return it. Unfortunately, Lowe's does not allow returns once fuel is in the unit. This makes no sense because how are you supposed to know a piece of gas powered equipment works properly if you aren't allowed to put fuel in it? This is the main advantage of purchasing power equipment from Home Depot instead of Lowe's. My personal preference is a dealership, but that is not always feasible. Thank you for watching! I had one of these that had the retail stop sale cited camshaft issue. This was my first Honda mower so I just thought it was a normal odd quirk. From the day I first ran it, it would intermittently act like the engine was "hydro locked" when I attempted to start it. It did not happen every time I attempted to start. It would literally lock-up to the point that if I were to of pulled the starter rope any harder it would of broken the rope or the plastic cover housing the rope recoil mechanism. I also noticed that if I just let it set a second or two and then slowly, firmly and steadily pulled the starter rope the feeling of the hydro-locked engine would fade, the engine would free up, and then the engine would start normally. Anyway, last week I by chance saw the stop sale notice thing being talked about in a video, found a copy of the notice to read myself and immediately realized I had an affected HRX217 mower. So rather than go through the hassle of having to wait weeks or a month or more during the summer mowing season for a warranty engine repair I just returned it to Home Depot for a refund just two days before their 90 day purchase return policy expired. I then the same day went to a Toro dealer and bought a TimeSaver as I have a large-ish lawn. By the way Home Depot no longer sells the TimeSaver in stores and have a two week delivery wait if you buy one from them at homedepot.com. This whole thing was super disappointing as that Honda mower other than the camshaft issue was awesome - so light, powerful and the hydro-static drive was the fastest and best working of any mower I've owned or tried.

It is very disappointing, but I am glad to hear you were able to just get a refund. As you stated, this is the mowing season and who wants to wait weeks for a repair? Thanks for posting this. Mine is exactly the same and I've had trouble deciding whether I have the "real" issue. Every time I start it, I pull it gently to feel out whether it's difficult. If it doesn't give me resistance, I pull normally. If it feels hydro-locked, I slow down and it works ok.

I have a HRX 217 that is about 4-5 years old. First 2 years I had issues where the mower would not start and took it to a service center which worked on Honda mowers. They said that the valves inside the engine was stuck, due to ‘bad gas’ and varnished the valves. Well I had new gas so this I found hard to believe. Since I this happen twice, Honda themselves said they would not cover any further repair for this problem, since they also said ‘bad gas’ so user error. The mower technician had recommended putting a cap or two of Sea Foam into each gallon of gas, to help avoid the problem. I was skeptical that this would solve the problem, HOWEVER IT DID!!!! Since I started adding Sea Foam to my gas for the mower, we have NOT had any further issues with starting of the mower. Give this a try, nothing to loose except for price of can of Sea Foam, which will last a long time using only 1-2 caps of it per gallon of gas. In 2022 on KZbin that Honda was going to discontinue the push mower entirely. I asked this of the mower service center that has worked on mine for common maintaining of the mower and they said they were receiving the same information. So wait and see the outcome, especially since it appears that many of the manufactures are moving to all electric style mowers. Good luck to all the Honda Mower owners!! I've grown up with a Honda HR214SX and currently have one in my shed. I also currently own an HRC216HXC and a HRX217HYC. They are all good machines. The camshaft on these newer mowers is a little more involved than on my older HRX with the GCV190. The GCV200 (and 170) engines are actually a little harder to get to the cam as it's inside the crank case next to the crankshaft. Honda has made these engines as a pushrod OHV design not unlike its commercial GX(V) series.

Thanks for making this video. 👏👏👏 I have a 2023 HRX217K6HYAA bought in April of 2023. So I am definitely in the danger zone for this problem. I also have a 20 year old HRX217. The hydrostatic transmission finally gave out so I disconnected the transmission drive shaft from the wheels and use it as a push mower. Still works fine. But I wanted a functioning self propelled unit as I have well over an acre of mowing. So I bought this new HRX217. I didn't want to wait because of Honda stopping production of mowers this fall. I wouldn't say my new mower is easy to pull start although with a FIRM pull it usually starts on the first try. But it is not clear to me how hard is too hard and is a symptom of a flawed unit. Subscribed! 👍

Honda issued offical recall in USA today 9/14/23. It won't let me post the link but it's on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website, recall number 23-287. I called my local dealer and he said it is ALL HRX217 and HRN216 mowers they have in stock on hold and then others between the dates shown on the recall notice, from May 2022 to June 2023. My dealer said they are waiting on the part, to be able to fix mowers customers have brought in as well as their inventory so they can once again sell them. Mine has a waiting list for those wanting to buy, which is me :)

I've had it in 4 times the last 2 were at a authorized Toro dealer and they finally replaced the carburetor it ran for about 10 min then sputtered and stalled and couldn't restart! Brought it back to the dealer and after them consulting Honda, they swapped the entire engine. Running good so far (6 months). Thanks for your video! Ironically I purchased my first Honda powered item about 3 years ago after nothing but good luck with Briggs & Stratton equipment for 40 years! It’s a Honda GCV 190 on a pressure washer that may or may not be effected by the recall as it is three years old. But so far so good! More irony…I’ve owned a few B&S flatheads that rarely broke. The last 3.5 horse ran for around 20 years with minor repairs. In fact I moved it to another deck after the first one rusted out. So 5 years ago I decided to replace it with a new Toro. My first self propelled. When I purchased it I had a choice of the tried and true flathead or the newer OHV (both B&S) and chose to move up from the 100+ year old flathead to the newer OHV. I decided to change the oil this year (B&S says only add oil) and found the oil contained metal dust. I’ll probably tear it down this fall after the grass quits growing in October.

Beginning last year, it uses more oil during the summer than it holds and struggles to cut. I fear it’s at the end, but I remain committed to running it to its last chuff before getting something new. There, at present, is no serial number range yet on defective cam units, the stop sale is effectively for all Honda walk behind mowers. That's why they issued a stop sale for all mowers...here in California anyway. The potential for injury lawsuits is the reason they are halting sales...btw, you can still buy a Honda mower but the dealer assumes injury liability if they sell you one and you are injured as a result of the camshaft issue.

Repairman said I was the third person that had called locally that week with the same problem, and if I could return it to home depot that would be the best solution. Be a little bit careful...While you or I am strong enough to pull against full compression, we're also strong enough, to break the starter rope, or even more likely, the nylon pawl that engages with the starting cup. If that breaks, you will have to replace the starter assembly. Make sure you pull fast enough, to avoid "pull back", because of the advanced ignition timing sparking before top dead center. At the very least, it pulls the cord handle out of your hand, which sometimes hurts. It also greatly increases the likelihood of damaging the pawl. If it breaks the rope, there's a possibility of winding back and damaging the recoil spring.

They said they have no updates to share but would have someone contact me. Sure enough I get call this morning from Honda and the lady says they have the replacement parts on hand at corporate and they will fedex them to my local shop today.

Got my mower back last weekend after 2 months . The dealer said they had to fix it twice. First they replaced the cam and then they had to replace a compression gear(?) I half think they were using that as an excuse as to why it took so long since they got the part a month ago. Luckily there are a handful of shops around us because I won't be going back to those guys.

I tried my newly repaired brand new mower out a couple weekends ago for the first time and the blade engage was acting funny and it sounded terrible. When I killed it and tried to restart it, what do you know, the pull cord wouldn't budge. Called Honda and told them something it still messed up but I wasn't going back to the same shop and was taking it another shop nearby and I dropped it off last weekend. Got a call from Honda today and they are replacing the entire engine under warranty because the other place didn't reassemble the blade stop system correctly and it jacked the engine. An utter mess but Honda service has really been on the ball on getting things handled.

When Honda stopped selling mowers solely through their dealer network things went bad. Big box stores like Home Depot cheapened the brand and it shows in their quality. Hondas decision to stop building lawnmowers is no big deal at this point.
@averagejoevideo9556
@averagejoevideo9556 Жыл бұрын
That's a very valid point!! I believe this is the reason that Stihl refuses to sell in the big box stores. To a big box store, this is merely a product they no longer carry...happens all the time. However, to a dealership this could be detrimental. With that being said, most power equipment dealers carry Honda in addition to other brands, but still losing the mower lineup will affect the bottom line. Thank you for watching! I have no idea if my mower falls into this catagory. Its a craftsman bought at Lowes with a Honda engine. Its about 4 years old and after a 1 season of use I had to take the carb off and clean the jet because it was doing a little surging. The crappy ethanol gas caused that. Runs great now and been using seafoam in gas to help keep it clean. If i have anymore issues I will just throw it out and buy a 40volt electric mower.

The 2017 models were a previous style of engine. They were overhead cam engines where the cam is on top of the cylinder head. Those cams only wear out if the machine is neglected and the oil is not changed regularly. The new style engines are overhead valve, but have push rods and the cam is inside the crank case. It's a much bigger job to replace the cam on the new style engine than on the old style.

Another thing i've noticed lately, blue smoke, puffing out of the muffler on occasion. Seems to be a random thing. I have about 14 hours on this mower. Sometimes on startup after sitting between use, usually once a week. When engaging the roto-stop, may puff out for a few seconds. Not a giant cloud. Also after idling while dumping bag contents then turning up engine speed. Called the dealer about it, mechanic i talked to said he's had several calls on this topic. They're not quite sure what is causing it, he mentioned something about possibly negative pressure in the cylinder drawing oil up past the rings dependent on piston position at shutdown, this relating to startup. He did not have a definitive answer though that would cover all the scenarios. I have not had to add any oil right now, level looks good. I always check before startup.
