The Outback is in a class of its own. It's design is a relic on the 80s and 90s mid size station wagons with a little more clearance and awd added. And that's what makes it special.

Ou are wrong on your design point. It is not a relic from the 80s or 90s. It is completely designed for this era. Our ‘11 outback was light years ahead of the so called 80-90s design so this can only be light years above ours.

@@Subie-Driver I think the Outback has more in common with station wagons than other crossovers. More sedan than the Rav4 but more capable and flexible than a Camry. They are a good compromise. The 80s and early 90s actually did have cars that had a similar niche to the new Outback. The Toyota ae95 Corrolla wagon(smaller but it was taller than some in it's class and had awd) and the AMC Eagle wagon.

That's why Toyota should bring the Crown - some competition can't hurt. Also, the cargo I carry is better matched to a shorter vertical height of storage, but more depth. I just don't pile stuff up 40" high, so I'd *much* rather have the greater square footage than greater volume when that volume is all about how tall the rear cargo area is.

After watching a series of your videos and testing on different compact SUV, I ended up getting Outback Touring XT (I guess it's Premier XT in Canada). The biggest reason is the comfort and smoothness of driving on OB is much better than CRV and RAV4. Another reason is the 2.4 Turbo makes a huge difference than base engine and outperforms the other competitors in similar price range. I did struggle with CRV Hybrid Sport Touring vs OB Touring XT. Tbh, I really love the exterior design of CRV, which is definitely more cutting edge and futuristic than many other similar SUVs (KIA looks even better though) but instead Subaru has its classic 'Subaru stereotyping' look, which is rugged and old fashioned (to me, it's even worse for that additional front head cladding). But finally one thing pulled my trigger to get OB is the whole package. What Subaru delivers on this flagship vehicle is full of sincerity - they try to give you the best features as they can from safety system, the AI, the leather, the ventilated /heated seats, the audio speakers, to some details to make you feel they care. On contrary, CRV looks more indifferent just as Honda know you will buy it anyway, even for their top trim, the overall features are just still marginal less. If I would pay similar price to get a top trim of them, I will pay for the heart. Again, the turbo really matters and OB can easily win simply because of that.

The Outback is great. Uber popular where I live in the northeast. They are great in snow and I love that they have a goldilocks ground clearance height. Not so high that you have to climb up into it like taller SUVs, but not so low you have to climb down when you take a seat.

This is one of the features I loved about it above all others. Climbing into the higher SUVs is not a good thing. As I get older my back gets worse and there's no way I want to be climbing up. The outback has perfect height and comfortable seating.

I am a first time Subaru buyer. Just bought a 2021 Outback limited and so far I love it. The height getting in and out of it is fantastic, fits my bike with the seats folded down and the integrated roof rails for my kayak is awesome. Comfortable and quiet ride and I love this car so far. ❤️

After having four Subarus including our current two, I really think that the base 2.0 l engine on the crosstrek and the 2.5 l engine in everything else gives them a great balance between very adequate power and fuel mileage. Our ‘18 crosstrek limited with the 2L engine gets between 6.5 and 7.0 l/100km on the highway…driving at 105 kmh. Our ‘22 forester with the 2.5l gets between 7.0 - 7.2 l/100km on the highway doing the same speed. Seems like everyone wants every vehicle to be rockets on wheels. I started driving Subaru because of their practicality, fuel mileage, and real-time (symmetrical) AWD. They still have that and I hope they don’t lose sight of that.

Highway : between 5.5 and 6.2 on a 11 hour drive @ speeds over 110 km/h and peaks over 130 km/h (middle lane) for about 2-4 hours. Car was fully loaded as we were on a vacation trip. City: 7-9 l/100 km as we live outside of a major city but have stop signs at almost every corner.

I've only ever owned Toyota's until last year. Bought a 2024 Subaru Onyx XT. Love it. Drives great. Then a week later bought a new/used work car. A 2020 Subaru Legacy non turbo. Also a great car. Especially where I live now we get a lot of snow. So the all wheel drive is nice.

Get the turbo. More power is always good when you need it. These Outback's are very competent vehicles offroad as well, much more than people expect. As a stationwagon (man, are these rare now) with great ground clearance then it borders on one of the best family allrounders you can get.

@@VanGogh1999 Subaru was selling the 6 cylinder 3.6r for more than a decade. They recently replaced it with the XT engine. The 3.6r was more reliable than the 4 cylinder 2.5.

Took 2023 for a test drive. Loved the interior. It was so comfy, didn't have to stretch to reach the touch screen, large touchscreen, centre console extends forward enough to put my arm on comfortably. I wanted this vehicle so much. But I absolutely refuse to buy a CVT. Still too many problems with them in general. I worry that my vehicle will not last. Toyota's the only one with the proper CVT which isn't even the same as the kind of outback has. But I'm not paying Toyota's dealership prices which are jacked up outrageously.

Outback is a significant car that created this segment. Its not only a-class-of-its-own, it owns this segment. I have read somewhere that Outback owns 95% of the wagon segment. They will have even more market share when VW decided to drop Golf All Trek for Mk8 generation, while A6 allroad, V90 Cross Country and E-Class All Terrain are much more expensive.

In Europe there still is the Skoda Octavia scout 4wd, the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack 4wd, Volvo V60 4wd, Volkwagen golf 8 stationwagon AWD, and Audi, Mercedes and BMW also have stationwagons with 4wd

The Volvo V60 or V90 Cross Country, Mercedes E-Class wagon, and Audi A4 and A6 Allroad are really the only comparable true wagons to the Outback and they all cost significantly more money. The Outback is literally the only approachably priced wagon left in the North American market.

Ordered a 2022 Outback XT Premier last February, and received it in September...Yep seven months wait! Already has over 17 000kms on it after six months driving. Things I love: 1. Attractive looking vehicle. 2. Plenty of acceleration from the 2.5L Turbo. 3. Great in snow, especially with snow tires. 4. Comfortable leather interior with lots of room, front and back. 5. Loads of trunk space. 6. Great sound system. Things I hate: 1. Terrible on the highway in high winds. (One of the worst I've ever driven, in fact.) 2. Noisy engine that takes far too long to idle back down after cold start. 3. Far too much wind noise at highway speed. 4. Fuel economy not great (Averaging 12L per 100 Kms). 5. Poor navigation system. 6. Touch screen is slow to react. 7. Questionable quality (Already replaced driver's side seat vent, and there is a disconcerting noise somewhere in the suspension.) 8. Some of the "safety" features are very annoying, especially the Driver Monitoring System that drags you back to the center of the lane whenever you get too close to the roadside. Also, waay too many warning beeps!!! I like my Outback, but would I buy one again? No.

I have a live hate relationship with Subaru. Brand is too focussed on the eye sight ( hate it) don't need touch screen ( our foster still has buttons for heated seats ) I have always liked the Outback. Problem for me now is the Premium pricing now for 2023 for a XT.

My son got his 2023 Outback wilderness last month.He loves the car but #1 complaint is lack of buttons. He finds infotainment screen is annoying. I’m glad I occasionally ride with him; it has confirmed I won’t part with my 2018 Outback 3.6R Touring until it falls apart.

It’s the absence of physical buttons. That screen is slow, it hesitates; it has soooo much going for it but that screen is a miss and they REFUSE to put buttons back.

TOTALLY AGREE. I currently own a 2020 Onyx XT and I love the car with the exception of the head unit. It reboots in the middle of driving. Sometimes even the safety system reboots with it. It's so annoying that it really has me looking for an alternative for my next vehicle.

I was very worried about the lack of buttons and screen coming from a 2015. But after a couple of outings, the screen my 2022 Touring has been more intuitive than I expected. It has a hand "home" button that I don't think was present on the 2020 & 21 models.

I just found your channel and am really enjoying it! I’m starting to research a replacement for our 2019 CRV AWD Touring. We’ve had it for 5 years and it’s been great. Summertime we get ~35mpg and winter ~33mpg. All mixed driving. I was disappointed to learn that if we want the same trim level Honda is forcing a hybrid on us. With the performance of the old car and the gas mileage I don’t see any reason to look at hybrids. So the search is on for replacement from possibly another manufacturer. We have no interest in Kia or Hyundai. I’ll be checking out your videos for info. Keep up the great work.

Subaru really stepped up for the latest gen of Outback. We are really happy with our 2023 Limited OB. The Mazda CX50 was on our radar as well and a good friend of ours purchased one. The CX50 def has the exterior looks, but the 2023 OB blows the CX50 away in terms of interior. I really feel the new OB is class leading in terms of features, comfort, safety, and overall capability. Even the new Honda CR-V falls short in terms of features.

We went from 2015 2.5L OB (Gen 5) to 2022 2.5L OB Touring (Gen 6). Enough power for us, have even towed a 2,000 boat over Cascade Mt passes with it. Very satisfied with our Subaru in terms of mileage (~ 30 on highway, with up to a 600 mile range. We were concerned about adapting to their often maligned Gen 6 touch screen controls but adapted pretty quick to it, but still prefer more knobs and buttons (70 yr olds). Also the Gen 6 front seats feel a little more restricted than those in Gen 5. The longer cargo area and more car like handling are why we got an Outback instead of the much praised 2022 Hyundai Tucson -- that and the fact they we could get VIP pricing on the OB vs $4K above sticker on the Tucson (in WA state). We are very happy with Outback. The improved eye sight and digital rear view camera are nice upgrades for the 23 model, extra cladding not so much IMO.

I found the ride and seats more comfortable in Gen 6. I had a loaner for a day and it rode so smoothly I had to check the tire pressure to see if they were uninflated. They were not, they were actually over inflated!

Hi, I have a 2023 OB 2.5 . When you pulled the boat over the mountain pass was the Outback really struggling? How were the rpms? I want to pull a small aluminum fishing boat maybe about 1800 lbs but on mostly flat roads in Wisconsin.

My Outback is the last of a 3.6L 6-cylinder engine, I love the smoothness and torque it gives out. However, I wish it had a hybrid engine during the energy crisis of late.

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your work because it really facilitates decision-making for the purchase of a vehicle. I have been driving a Subaru for more than ten years and a Forester for four. I now intend to purchase an Outback. I still have two questions. I would like to know if, due to a different calibration of the suspension of the Wildernes model, you have noticed a difference in this one when driving on pavement compared to the XT model. I own the 22 Onyx XT and I'm very happy w the ride and power. city driving stay at home dad suburbs route every day barely hits 16 mpg so underperfroming to their estimates for sure. Hwy mpg seems to be right what they claim, maybe even better ( on recent trip to Vegas I had cruise set to 80-85 almost the whole way and was still avg ing 25 mpg's, great for that speed)

Great video. Nice and detailed. You are the very best being thorough for Canada and the USA. One thing you should add to your videos is the maintenance and cost each require. Cost does not have to be exact. In Canada they have like an A,B,C, D schedule. I own a crosstrek on it's next inspection it will have 68,000 km. That C inspection is just over $1000.00 and does not cover any parts like cabin filters etc. It does cover the oil change. My guess between non turbo and turbo there is a cost difference for maintenance since the engines are so different. Maybe that change is only later in it's life. This is the first time I have owned a crosstrek ( Outdoors) and it seems to be also the most expensive for maintenance I ever owned. I have had a few AWD /4WD makes.

As the owner of a 2018 Subaru Outback 3.6R I’m not a big fan of four-cylinder engines although the turbo is quicker the 6. Just something about the sound of a 4 cylinder. I had a 2016 with the 4 cylinder so I know. I do not like all the added cladding and will have to think twice about it when I go to replace my 2018 later this year. Great review as always!

I have loved Subaru’s having owned 3 over the years. I wanted an EV for my next car and looked at the Solterra the BEV from Subaru but it didn’t have the battery, features, charging and range. So I left Subaru and got a EV6 and couldn’t be happier

Fantastic review as always and really appreciate the comparison between the 2 models you reviewed. Would love to hear your thoughts on that new burgundy color and the new blue color. To Zach's point, I don't really care about the cladding so much. Maybe it is overdone on the wilderness edition but they look very close to me now. I would prefer the Orange trim and stitching on the Wilderness Edition over the lime green inside the other trims. To Andrea's point, I am surprised that Subaru has nothing to offer in this as a hybrid yet. It seems way overdue. I am also quite surprised that that the 360 camera system is not available yet, but I imagine it will be soon given the Solterra borrowed it from Toyota. I would like to see your opinions on this new Outback compared to the upcoming refreshed Ascent. The Ascent Looks a lot nicer with some subtle changes and offers the new infotainment screen. I am somewhat surprised there is not more 2nd row backseat room though in the Ascent. The Outback seems to have more rear seat room. Maybe it is just me. Happy belated Thanksgiving!

I was at my dealer today. Sat in the Outback and Ascent with the driver seat adjusted for me and then sat behind the driver's seat. I had the same leg room in each, with the Ascent middle row seat pushed back all the way. I didn't test the 3rd row seating because we're past that phase and aren't car pooling kids anymore!

As an outback and legacy owner Subaru needs to get it together woth fuel efficiency. At best my legacy 3.6 gets 26mpg and my 2.5 outback gets 28. Bt they average like 23 and 24 respectively. You have all these other suvs and even the sienna doing 30 mpg plus. Tucson, sportage, highlander, sorento, santa fe, shoot even the cx 9 with a turbo 2.5 gets about the same real world fuel economy as the outback 2.4 turbo and its a much bigger suv.

Who knows when Subaru will completely hybrid. What I do know is, Mazda is building all new powertrains that includes hybrid tech. If a miniature company like Mazda can do it with a limited budget, then Subaru have no excuse.

Went to the dealer today and found out that the fin camera and digital mirror doesn't exist in Canada (saw another review that refers to the fin camera so the dealer may have been confused?). Anyway this surprised me given that this review is Canadian. The spec sheets make no mention of the fin camera (EDIT: found it in the spec sheet finally. Called "Smart mirror" and only the Premier XT (top of the line Canadian model) has it. )

Our Outback XT is like many of the others out there stricken with problems... tranny failed at 20000km now at 50000km and it burns more oil then our 1972 GMC farm truck. Subaru is doing the oil consumption calculation right now. When asked how common it is. Subaru dealer said there's 20+ Subaru's going through the same test any anyone time. At one time Subaru built a great car we have owned a Subaru since 1997 but this will be our last.

What do you mean by "regular fuel". Here in Australia the non-turbo Outback takes regular unleaded 91 RON fuel, whereas the turbo requires premium unleaded 95 RON fuel. Right now, that's about 14 cents a litre difference in price. But I have seen a comparison review where they did their own fuel consumption testing and the fuel costs worked out about the same overall. The turbo got better city figures and the non-turbo got better highway.

Has the sound-insulating front door glass been removed on the 2023 XT trims? Not seeing this feature mentioned in any official materials for 2023 as compared to 2022. If feature removed, any increased noise within the cabin for 2023?

I don't understand me having to tell the car whether I am in sand, snow, deep snow, mud, etc. How about this - just respond automatically to whatever the conditions are. I have to take snow depth measurements, analyze mud versus dirt content and take moisture and temperature values before I know what mode to put the car in....

We've got a 2011 Outback, 6 cyl., 5-spd tranny, not quite 60K miles. We think we'll stick with it a while longer. lol

My wife wants a quiet and comfortable highway ride. Which model has the most quiet and luxury ride? We currently have a 2015 Toyota Rav4 Limited and I totally hate the loud road noise, wind noise, and rough ride. Absolutely a torture to drive. My Ford F150 is a Cadillac in comparison.
