I’m almost following the same regimen! In March I had a root touch up (my hair is colored). Two weeks after the root touch up I noticed that the left side of my hair in the middle was broken down to 5 inches from my scalp. I thought, “I paid $400 for this!” I composed myself and took steps to recovery: before a wash day I fed my scalp with oil that was infused with ayurvedic herbs - left it on for 24 hours, stimulated my scalp with Rene Furterer’s Complex 5 for 30 min before the wash routine. In the shower I wash with Dove Bond Strength shampoo, condition with K18, condition with Dove Bond Strength Mask, condition with Dove bond Strength conditioner, condition with Living Proof Triple Bond Repair. NO heat and I put my hair up. I repeated this 2x per week, alternating one wash with Quai Detox shampoo. Once a month I use a protein shampoo and conditioner. In July my niece trimmed my hair. She blended the broken section with the rest of my hair. My hair was 2 inches past my shoulders. 5 months later, last weekend, I had to see how things were going. After my wash routine, I flat ironed my hair. I was in shock. My hair is just brushing my bra strap. I dusted my ends and thought, “Girl you put work in!!!!” And, it paid off! Now, I don’t even think about it. I just do the routine. I even figured out my hair color formula. I am never going to a hair stylist again.

@@shelly.v.247 I had to strengthen my hair before I experienced more breakage. I landed on Abbey Yung’s KZbin channel where she said the Dove Bond Strength line was magical and her hair felt like liquid silk. She reviews a lot of products but I’ve never heard her rave about a product like this. I don’t use drugstore products, but, I was curious. My hair texture is in the 4b range. When I use the Dove Bond Strength, my hair feels like liquid silk. So, I decided to follow Abbey’s entire regimen. She uses OGX oil for pre-poo. I use my own ayurvedic oil concoction as my pre-poo. I also added Rene Furterer Complex Five. It strengthens the scalp and creates an environment that grows strong hair. Another product that I added is the Aphoge ProVitamin leave-in conditioner. And, I protect my ends every moment of each day with a mix of Olaplex 6 and 7. Slick back bun days = oil my scalp with my oil concoction+Adwoa Baomint styler+ Bumble and Bumble Anti Humidity Gel Oil. Now I only use K18 once a month. The routine is so simple with maximum results. You have to do what is right for you.

I’ve been wearing my hair straight for the first time in my 5 years natural. Not gonna lie you are right about stretched styles and single strand knot prevention. My stylist saw so many split ends - it was a hot mess - curly cuts don’t catch anything. She trimmed me even - and now I’m maintaining the blow dry till smooth and light flat iron ( one pass and ceramic iron only). 410 or less - I’m going to start trying to decrease the temp. I’ll go back curly for summer - and hopefully my ends will be spotless then. My curls return - when wet - and I continue to keep an eye on it hydration deep condition and all - no issues with my highly dense, course and medium width strands. It also finally feels good to see the length I’ve achieved (mid back ). Would have been longer if not for the no oil & butter issue! 😢

It sounds like you’re on the right track Sis! 🥰🙌🏽 If I may give a suggestion: When you’re using heat make sure you’re using a good heat protectant which I’m sure you are. Also, do a protein treatment and use a bond builder before and after. It’ll help keep your curls intact and protect your beautiful strands. This way you can enjoy bouncing back and forth with a little more peace of mind. 💖 Lastly, I’m glad your hair is thriving and you’re enjoying great length retention! What a beautiful blessing! 🙌🏽

Thanks for the update, Shelly! Wooo it's been a journey, right?! Lessons learned and shared; can't appreciate you enough for sharing it all with us because chile, you saved so many from the angst, grief, and just confusion and proved that simple is best, ain't nothing wrong with oils + butters, and doing too much is really doing too much. Thank you. Your hair is looking fab and I hear you on the ease of stretched hair. I still rock it curly during summer months (I'm on east coast) but for this winter, I'm going to wear twists/twist-outs, braids/ braid-outs, slick-back buns, etc because I found that I just have less splits and it's overall easier and quicker to manage than a daily washngo. I was using olaplex for bond building generally but just got a trial size/sample size of K18 to try. I've been eyeing that Pattern protein treatment mask so may try that soon as well.

I’ve been watching hair stylists say that letting your hair air dry is super damaging to hair. Even more so than blowing it dry. 🤷🏽‍♀️
@shelly.v.247
@shelly.v.247 23 күн бұрын
Yes I’ve heard them say that as well. Many are basing it on a study that in my opinion seems to be a bit flawed. 😅 Either way, we know wet hair is more fragile than dry hair so it’s important to get the hair dried in a reasonable amount of time. Plus you don’t want to create scalp issues by keeping the hair wet for too long either. 😝 So what I do is towel dry (with a microfiber towel) my hair really well. Especially the middle section of my hair. I try and avoid putting get there because it’ll slow down the drying process in that area. So I primarily add the gel to the perimeter of my hair since I’m wearing it pulled back right now. I allow it to air dry during the day and at night I loosen it up and anything that’s wasn’t dry before bedtime is dry in the morning. I’ve never had issues or experienced damage from air drying my hair like that. However I can certainly understand that someone would be concerned about it. 😅

Still trying to use up the jar of big poppa I have, since I feel it makes my hair too crunchy, and the other day I randomly decided I needed to slick back my hair and I followed the method you used in your IG vid the other day, adding the gel first and then putting the ponytail holder on, which helped it to lay down neatly without it being tight, but I put grease on first and then the big poppa and it didn't dry as crunchy as normal. Next day it is feeling nice and soft. 😊 Love hearing about your new routine! Natural hair is definitely so much simpler than we sometimes make it😅. Keeping your hair stretched more the longer it gets is the truth! 💯 Your eyeliner looks very nice in this vid.❤
@shelly.v.247
@shelly.v.247 Ай бұрын
Hi Luv! Yes, I agree the Big Poppa can be sometimes be crunchy. 😅 I find adding a hair serum or light amount of oil prior to using it buffers that from happening. Even using a thicker leave-in or not fully rinsing out my conditioner has the same effect. There are so many ways to change up the level of hold it has. ☺️ Yes, wearing my hair stretched most of the time makes it way easier to manage my hair. I can literally wash it daily if I wanted because it stays super detangled and organized that way. 🎉 Aww thank you for the sweet compliment regarding my eyeliner. 🥰I’ve been working hard to protect a good wing! 😆

You are so welcome Sis! My youngest son has hair that could be considered 4C and his hair is almost to the middle of his back now when stretched. So all of our hair grows but the difference is, are we retaining the length that has grown. When the hair is properly taken care of you can retain the length you’ve grown. The way I do that for him is I wash his hair monthly really well. Then I use leave-in and hair grease and twist up his hair. If you want to see his hair it’s on my instagram page. I hope that’s helpful. 🥰

I, too, have gone back to what works for me. However, I cannot bring myself to go back to the non-Black corporations. Just me. One thing that I have been doing that holds moisture in my high porosity hair to a higher level is using UFD as a topper, instead of a base. I was shook when I tried it that way.

You look beautiful and your hair looks amazing! Just curious, when you pull your hair back, is it wet/damp or do you let it dry first?
@shelly.v.247
@shelly.v.247 Ай бұрын
Great question! When I pull it back I towel dry it first with a microfiber towel. I make sure I get the center part really good with it. I do that so even though it’s bound with the hair tie it still is able to dry fast. I also do not add any hair get to the center of my hair because if I do, my hair will stay wet in that area forever! So I only put the gel in the perimeter of my hair and then on my puff. At night I will loosen up the hair tie significantly so my edges can get a break from the tension and my hair can finish drying if it hasn’t already. For the follow up days I just dampen the perimeter of my hair and add more gel and it’s done. Takes me max 5 minutes. Hope that all makes sense 😅

Exactly what I wanted to know too! In the summer I used a microfiber towel to absorb excess water from my hair before pulling it back into a slick back bun using UFD + Wetline and that was sufficient. Now that I am using a thick cream styler heavy in oils and butters with my gel for the colder mos, I will sit under the dryer for about 15 mins before pulling my hair back. Otherwise, it will never dry on the inside.

Hey Shelly, what do you think is the reason behind your hair being back to its natural rich black color? My hair went through the discoloration, but I got a big chop to get a fresh start. I don’t know for sure but I’m wondering if it was the access water & product in the hair being cooked under the dryer. Trying to make sure I don’t go down that road again.
