Honestly, someone can dare me to do something all day long. I wouldn't be that dumb to jump off a ship. Death is always tragic but what exactly was he intending? Stopping and ruining everyone's evening, selfishly? Well he did that by dying. Knowing that it was indeed stupid, he'd probably be arrested if he had lived. Either way it was dumb. 🤷🏾‍♂️

If your friend is daring you, they should be the first ones to take the jump for themselves. But also it's common sense, do not jump off a cruise ship, it's not like the video games. You don't get ten lives with a first aid kit at your disposal. There's no restarts in this world.

Same. I didn't realize how far I drifted out , until I tried to make it back to shore. I then realized how people drown. U get so tired of swimming and panic that you just give up. I made it back but haven't really been waist deep in the ocean since.
@becky4728

The thing is, I did eventually give up and drown. It was very peaceful. Then a voice came to my right ear and asked,” You’re 15 years old. Do you want to die today?” It seemed like no big deal either way but I finally said no. Then I was hit by a surge of energy and shot to the surface. My handsome guardian angel came and plucked me out of the ocean and dumped me on the sand like a sack of potatoes. Passed out for a couple hours. Never even told my parents. It’s like I wasn’t allowed to.

@becky4728 let me tell you , I was on my last breath 🤣 and a friend was with me . I was so tired that I couldn't even tell him I was in trouble. Little did I know he was in the same predicament as me , panicked , scared , and tired. I wanted to grab on to him to stay up afloat but didn't because I told myself if I'm tired, he must be tired . He then was behind me, and can u believe he grabbed my leg to stay afloat while I was damn near dead ! I couldn't even tell him to let it go, I was so tired. Every time I thought I swim close enough to where it would be seafloor and I could stand up , it wasn't, and that just made me even more panicked. Then, for some reason, when I was / we were going give up , a huge wave pushed us to where it was seafloor again and we can stand . As we were pushed that last time by the wave, I can see the lifeguards running in after us 🤣 . God definitely was with us that day.

I was caught in a riptide when I was 20 while snorkeling. I was separated from my group and it was terrifying and I’m a great swimmer. I swam parallel to the beach and eventually at an angle to where I finally made it to land. I was completely exhausted, but glad I made it out. Riptides are no joke!

Coast Guard member here. For the first case and "why did they start a go-fund be before the search was called off". I have conducted many searches. The likely hood of finding someone alive drastically goes down after each hour. Even faster depending on the water temp. The average person can tread water for 2-3hours. To be honest when we search for over 6 hours our mindset goes from saving a life to finding a body.....

I was on a cruise (Carnival Elation, 2005) where a woman took her life by jumping off the ship. We returned to the point where she was last seen and spent 4 hours looking for her, along with the USCG, the Mexican Navy and the Belizian Navy. The Mexican Navy declared her lost at sea that evening. Put a serious dent on our 25th anniversary cruise.

The waters around Athol Island and Rose Island have lots of Tiger and Bull sharks. If you fall into the water at night, you might as well ring a dinner bell. Watching the video he swims away from the life ring which makes me think he saw something in the water between him and the life ring. So tragic and so unnecessary that it even happened. The sharks see prey that is struggling in the water and they do what sharks do best. Prayers for his family.

I can honestly say that even on my first cruise, I would never have done anything as stupid as standing on the balcony rails or accepting a dare from a so-called friend to jump off the cruise ship. There is such a thing as common sense, which is seems that many people are lacking in. I’m not speaking of either of these tragic incidents but there are people who take stupid to the next level. Been on over 40 cruises on many different lines, and there are a couple facts about people going overboard. #1 The railings and guards on ANY areas of ANY ship are designed to keep you aboard the ship, the railings are well above waist level, which leaves me to reason #2. #2 If you go overboard off a cruise ship it's because you are doing something very dangerous or very stupid, such as being drunk, showing off, etc. Any normal, responsible activity on a cruise ship will never involve going overboard.

If someone drowns, water fills the lungs and the body sinks. The buoyancy of a body's fat cannot keep it afloat. How long it remains under is a function of water temperature and sometimes marine life. Once the body decays and gasses are released, the body bloats and brings it to the surface. Warm water should take about three days or so. Cold water much longer.

If there is no body, how does the family hold a funeral with expenses? A memorial service would be more appropriate which doesn’t involve a lot of expense if done at a family location. Whatever the case, this is extremely tragic being that it was his first cruise. 😢

When I was in college, one job I took regularly was working at a lakeside resort. Long story short, somehow mixing large amounts of water, watercraft, people and alcohol is a recipe for accidents and dumb sh#t. Every week it was something serious that had to be called in. More than a few were fatalities. My cousin worked as a Ranger in Zion National Park. Add no water (dehydration), high cliffs and cell phones (selfies), as well as over confidence, you also see a lot of accidents and dumb sh#t.

We have seen many accidents reported in our local parks too. Always hearing stories in the news about people falling off the cliffs. Probably tying to do selfies or whatever. I’ve seen people going beyond the trails where they aren’t suppose to be and go leaning over the edge to get a better look or whatever. It’s just dumb.

The more you're educated about the odds and statistics of something, the more agonizing its going to be for you because you're going to be alone in a sea of others who are uninformed to the point of not listening to you when you tell them what's going to happen with almost a certainty. So the woman who launched that gofundme early is dealing with the reality of the situation rather than staying in denial.

I've been out on the ocean a lot, in various various sized crafts. I'd never jump in the ocean at night without proper equipment. Although humans are not the preferred food for sharks a swimming human looks like, their favorite food, a seal to them. And wearing bight colors at night even attracts them more. Dude was wearing a bright shirt.

People who take these rare tragedies to claim “this is why I won’t go on a cruise ship,” are probably just looking for some reason, any small reason, to justify why they don’t want to go on a ship anyway…such as their fear of water, or whatever. My condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of these lost two men. Cameron’s story is particularly tragic, since he did it for such a juvenile reason as taking a dare. Young people always seem to feel infallible. What a hard lesson to learn by Cameron’s friends. 😢

After seeing it again, in daytime, over clear waters, the Robbins kid would have been ok. It sounds like maybe the boat was parked in place? and it wasn't that far of a jump. But jumping into the nighttime ocean clearly did not work out well for him.

Navy Vet...it takes time for a ship to turn around, more so for a huge ship like that. We drilled man overboard often and have had shipmates gone over on their own. Never to be seen again. Lots goes into searching.

We used to put out small fish nets off the beach at night during the fall spot run here in NC. Getting out in the ocean at night is eerie. You stake your line on the beach and walk the net out about 50-100 yards, depending on net length and level of tide. You have to drag a sand bag tethered to the end. Small fish and shrimp are flipping out the water and in the back of your mind, you're wondering did you startle them or are they avoiding predation. There's been mornings you pull in your gill net and find holes where a shark swam through it. I wouldn't do it now if you paid me. The careless things we do in our youth...
