My high school had motion detector lights in the bathrooms that turned off after a period of time sensing no movement. The problem was, it couldn’t see inside the stalls. So sometimes a poor soul that was just taking a while on the toilet (and the only person in the room) would have the lights shut off on them. That poor soul was me on several occasions.
@pineappleroad2 жыл бұрын
The school i went to between 2011 and 2013 had motion sensor lights in every room, however, in the classrooms, the motion sensor was only there to turn the lights OFF automatically, you had to press one of the switches to get the lights to come on (there was a switch by the door, and a plate with 3 switches by the teachers desk, the lights were divided into 3 sections, the switch by the door turned them all on or off, the middle switch on the plate by the teachers desk also turned on or off all of the lights, and the end switches on that plate turned on or off the lights at one end of the room or the other And i lost track of the number of times the lights shut off (by themselves) while i was in a room

My mom got these pots and pans years ago. They were made by some big designer. The pots/pans were made of metal. The handles were made of the same metal. They were connected directly to the pot/pan. They looked pretty, but if you cooked with them you better break out the oven mitts because you WILL burn yourself on the handle.
@pigeonfeathers22172 жыл бұрын
I had some super cute cooking utensils that were silicone. Purchased them thinking it would be good for my pans b/c it won’t chip. The handles are wood and the silicone sort glued on. This means that anytime I’ve put them in the dishwasher, as one normally does with their cooking stuff, the wood gets like swollen and cracks. Sometimes the silicone part falls off too.

Not sure if this entirely applies to “form over function,” but I’ll give it a shot. This actually happened the other night, the last night of my family’s vacation in Harbor Island, South Carolina. Some context first: the condo we stayed in was more on the run-down side, but it wasn’t too terrible. It had two floors, which were probably two separate condos at some point, since the stairs connecting the two stories were so terribly built. So, when I went downstairs the other night to take a medicine I had forgotten to take just before I was about to go to sleep, I slipped (like how slipping is depicted in wet floor signs) and fell down the 2 or 3 bottom stairs I had yet to walk down and badly sprained BOTH of my feet. So, needless to say, the 14-hour drive home yesterday was VERY rough on me. My feet hurt so much that I had to stand on my tiptoes to walk without it being so excruciating.

The school one made me think of the school i went to between 2011 and 2013 The old building had a strange layout, there were 2 staircases, on the upper floors there were 5 classrooms per floor, but each classroom could only (normally) be accessed from one of the two staircases, if you were in a classroom on one side, and needed to go to a classroom on the other side, you had to walk all the way down to the ground floor, walk along the corridor on the ground floor, and walk up the other staircase Around summer 2012 the school moved into a new building, which thankfully didn’t have the stupid layout where you had to walk up and down stairs to get between different classrooms on the same floor, but there was a new weird design choice, the toilets There were no urinals at all, both the male and female toilets just had cubicles, and there was no door separating the area where the sinks were from the corridor, there was however, a door separating the area where the cubicles were from where the sinks were, oh, and the cubicles were a pain, the walls could shift around easily, so you could find yourself with a door that cannot be locked without shifting the walls, and it was real fun if someone shifted the walls while you were in there, as the door could swing open even when “locked”, or even a door that cannot be opened without shifting the walls

When it comes to the Apple mouse, I agree, the charger location is stupid. But there is an easy solution to that: plug it in when you’re not using it, if not every time, then like once or twice a week when you’re not using it. Then it will be charged for when you do need to use it. It’s not that difficult, even though the location is kind of stupid. Maybe it’s slightly different than your phone, but I see way too many people out there that will use batteries until they’re dead, and only then, charge them. I should also state that the more deep cycles you load on the battery, the quicker the life of the battery runs out.

Seriously, scrolling through headphones and earpieces etc, it took me so long to find headphones with a 3 button control scheme (and personally I'd have preferred 5, separating skip track/last track from volume control) I'd rather they be a bit bigger and bulkier, but easy to use with 5 buttons that each have one job, rather than a sleek design with one button that does 5 different things depending on how you press it.

I used to live in a building that had a triangular spiral staircase. It was hell to move furniture and you tell by the chips and scratches on the walls and corners that everyone suffered with it. Almost all my furniture that didn't come in a box had some sort of scratch on it because everything had to be squeezed through the staircase. I bought a box-spring which I had to return because it couldn't be moved upstairs, and instead bought a regular wooden bed frame. One of the most absurd design choices I've ever seen in person.

After a lot of frustration I spot an employee bringing food out to others and asked for help. Told I had to download app to order. Nope. Not going to download an app just to order 1 meal and then delete app afterwards. Haven't been back to that town or fast food restaurant since. Thankfully employee took our order and money and went inside and placed it for us.

The mentality should like this when it comes to form and functionality. Make the thing you want to create purely functional THEN you can add form it. Put enough form that it does not take away from the functionality. Granted, it will not look as good as likely first intended, but it is something to look at and work as intended. I had a discussion with someone who taught to kids, he had them do a project in making tools, he urged them to focus on the function of the tools first, when he was satisfied with the function, he let them go wild on the form. He mixed creativity and pragmatism into one and the kids loved it. Meanwhile, the other teachers only focused on the form rather than functionality and sometimes the other way around, the kids they taught were miserable, their tools were either plain or so formed that they had no function because it would break easily.

The evolution of cars seems more like a devolution aimed at making people depend more and more on service centers than on their own know-how. Why would you make all these fiddly, hard to work around modifications otherwise? I owned an old 1988 Jeep that, although kinda busted, was also *super* easy to repair and I'm not even that good with mechanical things like that. I changed the oil filter, the hoses for the coolant, several of the fuses and the fuel line all by myself without the slightest bit of confusion. Now let me have tried that with a newer car and I would have either damaged it beyond repair, or been unwilling to try due to having no idea what I was doing. Later on, I bought a 2014 Jeep and it would flood every time it rained. I had no idea what was going on... turns out it had a clog in the drainage system for the sunroof; something there was no way I would ever have thought of or even knew existed, and they tried to add literal thousands of dollars on to that tag, claiming my perfectly functional AC unit was damaged and needed to be fixed.

The reason car manufacturers go for touchscreens (which have no place in a car because of distractions) instead of buttons and dials is because one screen is cheaper than all the differently shaped buttons and dials, which require differend molds for injection molding which in turn increases cost.

Car companies do that to help lower the car's centre of gravity; to improve its steering, braking & handling. This in turn can make the car's electronic active safety systems operate with less effort, making them smaller, lighter, simpler & less material-intensive; car is not likely to roll over or pitch & roll so intensely, taking the tyres off the road. It makes the cars harder to work on for sure! Heck, I drive a 20+year old car & if I need another vehicle, it's going to be something older &/or simpler.
