Hey guys, I just installed windows 7 on my new laptop, and then bought an SSD. So my question is do I have to reinstall windows 7 after I've installed the SSD, or can I just: Turn off the laptop > swap hard disk with SSD > done? Ty for answer :-)

You need to reinstall windows 7 after installed the SSD. The os stays in the HDD

Quick question, would using the old HDD for extra storage just require putting the drive in some sort of USB enclosure?
@wildbill23c9 жыл бұрын
+CheeseBagel You could put it in an external enclosure and use it through a USB port, or with the Lenovo T-series laptops you can buy a caddy tray drop the hard drive into it, and swap it in place of the CD-RW or DVD optical drive and have an onboard 2nd storage drive.

Good video. I can't tell which Acer he's using but sometimes its good to update the bios if possible especially in dual core laptops. I did this in two Lenovo T61 machines. You won't get SATA 3 speeds but SATA 2 is still good. Look here for tips to optimize your SSD. You want to limit the writes. Windows 7, 8 and 10 all have trim but there are still things users can do to ensure a SSD lasts longer although in general they will out last and out perform any mechanical drive.

My laptop is making clicking sounds, takes about 5-10 minutes to boot, and programs, browsers, track pad, etc., often keeps freezing or not responding. Will changing to ssd drive fix this?
@SwitchedOnNetwork7 жыл бұрын
+jukijunk the clicking you hear might be your hard drive about to fail, so you might be forced to replace it soon anyway! Make sure you back everything up asap in case it does go. The other symptoms may be due to a very clogged up Windows installation, so if that's the case then yes a fresh install will sort that and everything will be faster and more responsive. Good luck! Once you're done, don't forget to show us your handywork and let us know about the improvements. We're @SwitchedOnNet on Twitter if you want to send a photo or video of the newly upgraded laptop when you're done :)

+Jonathan Peden How much RAM do you have? My laptop is about 3 yrs. old and thinking of changing the HDD to SSD, and upgrading the RAM to 8GB. I was thinking it might an AMD problem. Intel chips are faster.
@jonathanpeden99309 жыл бұрын
Raffi Melkonian I have 4gb of RAM. As for the rest - my AMD Athlon dual core runs at 2.3ghz and it has never had a problem or run slow. Can you just swap from AMD to Intel without a new motherboard? But my SSD has given everything a speed boost and it produces a lot less heat. I upgraded from W7 to W10 and the only downside is my graphics card will not let me capture gaming video, just still pics. So the SSD was my last roll of the dice before I get around to buying a more up to date laptop.

can I replace the SATA3 SSD with a SATA1 HDD in my old Compaq C707TU? will this really make any difference..
@SwitchedOnNetwork7 жыл бұрын
It'll definitely make a difference, yes. The read/write times will be faster and you won't need to worry about fragmentation. Bear in mind that you'll still be limited by other bottlenecks, but you'll at least be removing two big ones. Most SSDs you buy these days will be SATAIII but obviously you're still limited by the interface in your laptop so don't expect the FULL experience, and it's not going to turn your laptop into a superbeast, but YES - go for it, you won't regret it. If I were you, I'd probably go for something like this 256GB Samsung SSD, which is currently only $129 on Amazon: amzn.to/2wD4x4K

I have a old hard drive that is not working anymore, can I replace the hard drive with a ssd and reinstall Windows and could you install the ssd if you don't have the wrist band?
@SwitchedOnNetwork7 жыл бұрын
Hi Taran, yes you can just replace the broken hard drive with an SSD and install Windows onto that. Obviously you won't be able to copy over any of the data unfortunately, so hopefully anything important was backed up somewhere! Your laptop will feel like it's "brand new" with a completely fresh Windows installation on it. Depending on the version, you might need the serial key (usually stuck on the bottom of a laptop, under battery, or on the rear of a tower case) or it might just use a digital licence. You can install the SSD without a wristband by all means - that's just a precaution to prevent static buildup on your body discharging through the electronics inside your machine. As an alternative, you could touch the outside of a computer chassis first, or touch a radiator nearby if that's earthed.... basically anything which would discharge any buildup safely. If you can't do that, don't worry; just be careful and I'm sure you'll be fine :)

I'm sorry but your comparison does not make any sense. It's not apple to apple. You are comparing Fresh windows (just installed on SSD) with old windows (installed 3-4 years ago on HDD along with a lot of Bloatware) ! To compare correctly, the HDD should be cloned to the new SSD, then the comparison will make sense.

The only problem I see is the 760. Otherwise, I think you are good.
@IVAN3DX9 жыл бұрын
***** I said that because I have a 750 TI, and games work very good, but, for example, I can't play Wolfenstein (which isn't a marvel or graphics) on max settings, or at least not on 60 fps (Of course I'm talking about 1080p resolution) and the 760 is just a step further I think the problem is my RAM and CPU, because the only decent part of my PC is the GPU. Maybe the i3-2100 3,1 gHz and 4 GB of RAM are limiting the capacity of the GPU?
@IVAN3DX9 жыл бұрын
***** Really? there is THAT much difference between those 2? Anyways, I couldn't have got that one, since I didn't have the money, and anyways I don't think it would have been worth it. One las question, if you are willing, Farcry 4 works like crap. I've seen videos from people with the same GPU and it works just fine, so that's not the problem. You think it's the RAM or the CPU? Because I can upgrade RAM, but the CPU is other story...
@IVAN3DX9 жыл бұрын
***** The problem isn't the difficulty. I don't know how to do it, but I can learn. The problem is the price. I've read that I could put any second generation Intel processors to my motherboard. And I don't know if that's enough (Like, buying a second gen i5) or I should buy other motherboard and buy other family of CPU.
