I can think of workmates who kept disparaging nicknames for 30 plus years. There some you wouldn't say to their faces, like Black Jack because he would throw a hammer at you, but it was 'character building'.

This is what sets apart a good operator from an excellent operator! Machine maintenance! Everyone can put grease in a grease fitting, but very few do actually care for the machine in a way that's truly important. Repair broken parts, fix way covers, fix broken Oil lines. It's spending a few hundred bucks to keep an almost unbreakable, very reliable and very expensive machine in service for many more years. THATS what's keeping these beautiful machines alive!

I love the fact that you've allocated time for shop projects, and that you follow it even if the original thing can't be done. And it's not just about the break, but also putting work into the shop, maintaining it. SO many people fail to do this and the shop just degrades bit by bit along with their productivity. Most of my big machines are taken from such shops, because they couldn't keep up anymore. And all the stories are the same. "Just one too many problems."

I believe Kurtis has said these maintenance projects take place on the weekend so really no break involved. One day they will catch up on everything then it will only be minor maintenance from then on. 👍

There is always something that you wish was just a little bit better. And yes time off is great. The weekend is the best time to do projects and repairs. Unless you have a customer sleeping in your shop waiting for his job to get done. When I watch the rebuild videos it's. This is what we are doing today. Usually it all things that would drive me mad and if I didn't change them to not be dreaded then I believe that I would start to resent the occupation that I love. It's always better to have work look and feel like play then to be something that you have to do. I don't think that I have seen a video yet that was not a master playing with his craft. That is to all three of you. Even when Curtis has been so frustrated that he has to take a breath. He gets right back at it and if it wasn't part of the video then one would never know that there was something that didn't work out according to plan. The breath is just stop drop and roll before the fire comes and then the next thing we know the approach is changed and it's like nothing didn't work as planned. You always know that you are with a master that enjoys their craft when they stop and take five before the job ends up in the bin, or every step is so though out that it looks like hay maybe I could do that to and the first and last time I tried to mill something I broke every tool I tried to use and when I welded two parts together they looked like I got hungry and tried to eat them. But you know I think that despite my having two separate parts and not a welded part. I think that I might be able to do that. Please remember that work is play and play is work with a deadline. And with no you time or we time. You end up working a job. I hope that you will always be able to never have work be a dreaded job but rather it be something that just is because you orchestrated everything. Meaning it was for no other reason then you were there.

I get why they design the LED segment drivers like that (they scan through groups of segments and turn them on in sequence to save the number of IO pins they need on the processor inside, using your persistence of vision to hide the flicker) but it's super annoying for filming.

I drove JCB's and hated being on hire to the council, although I had a 4in1 clam bucket I could not pick up the last pea size bit of gravel due uneven surface. Yet five men would give me all differing hand signals to try and do it. I'd just jump out of the cab and kick it into the bucket with my foot.

I order my carbides from them online and if I order them Monday, they arrive Wednesday! This video brought back some old memories for me. My first "professional" machine shop job, (meaning that I was actually paid), was to clean a 40? yo Turret lathe for my Grandfather's shop. It was about 8 foot wide. That lathe looked as if it had never had a good cleaning, ever. It took me about a week to clean out about 5-6, 5 gallon buckets of really awful grease, coolant residue, and chips. It was back in about1965. It's been about 60 years now, and I can still remember the horrible smell of the debris! My older brother recently told me that he had worked on that cleaning job as well, but I don't remember him working on it with me, because at that time we didn't get along very well, so I guess we worked on it separately. I was about 10-11 yo, but I'd been "working" and learning about machining from him since I was about 6yo. He was a very patient teacher and taught me as if I was much older. I became the owner of his machine shop equipment about 40 years later, and I still operate the equipment, but that turret lathe had been sold previously.

Hey you two. We have yet another week gone. First thing that caught my eye was the big lathe in the background all covered up. It tells the tale of respect for your equipment. Keeps people from piling things on it that can damage the ways. The color you use on the guards is perfect. Are you thinking about doing a lot more painting ?
