Upgrading to the 49" Samsung Odyssey Neo G9

So, I bought this monitor and immediately started having problems with my PC (bluescreens, not booting etc). Turns out the 3080ti (I have evga) has a problem with this monitor. Once I updated the cards vbios through precision x1, everything is fixed! Just a heads up for anyone with this problem. :). Pete, great review!

Do u ever have wake from sleep issues? The monitor refuses to acknowledge the display port input. I find that it only happens when I lock my computer. I'm on Windows 10, not sure if 11 fixes anything like that.

I'm late to the party, but I just purchased this for my sim racing rig - one big difference is that the new Neo has HDMI 2.1s vs HDMI 2.0's on the previous G9. This was a game changer for me because it allows me to hook up my Xbox, PS5 and PC all at their best connections.

Yea I just got my g9 (the original) a few days ago. It's insane tho I went from an ultrawide to this so It wasn't a huge shock but I'm really enjoying it. I notice a very mild flicker very rarely in games but aside from that it's been flawless.

I recently bought a G7 4K 28" but will be returning it for a G9 tomorrow morning. I've read the flickering issues have been addressed with updates. I mine works. I bought Horizon: Zero Dawn (again; played it a ton on PS4 and PS5) and it looks incredible even on the G7 without the massive widescreen. Looking forward to trying that one out. I've got an OLED and Elevate soundbar for home theater and PS5 and will have this monster for PC gaming.

You mentioned that you can't get higher than 60Hz using HDMI via your Mac or 2080 GPU But had no issues with the new consoles. I'm not entirely sure of the bandwidth limitations of HDMI 2.0 but it's important to consider that all Mac products (including the M1 line) lack HDMI 2.1 and only the current gen NVIDIA and AMD GPUs have HDMI 2.1 ports. I'm assuming that is why you only are getting it to work on the ps5/Xbox series X.

Certainly a possibility, but he did mention using a CalDigit thunderbolt dock so the M1 was probably connected via thunderbolt and the issue was actually with the HDMI port on the doc, unless if he was using a special HDMI to DisplayPort cable.

Nice review! Ended up placing an order for one tonight with my local electronics retailer (Microcener). I had CRG9 before but it suffered a bit from flickering so I've been using the LG 48" OLED TV which has been great but I am missing the "WOW factor" that the super ultrawides give off! I don't think I can swing keeping both, but I think using the Neo G9 on the bottom and stacking the LG TV above it would be the perfect setup!

So, living with my Odyssey G9 Neo for several weeks now. Connected to Alienware X17 R1 via DP to mini DP. 240 Hz refresh rate. G-Sync recognized and working. Just updated the firmware to V. 1011.0 Have enabled HDR using the HDR Dynamic picture mode. Very happy with the image. I find that it does make the blacks...BLACK. Overall, very happy with the display. I paid US$1,945.00 for the Neo. Given that the prior version of the G9 still costs US$1,700.00 it wasn't really a hard choice to buy the Neo.

Glad I held out from buying the G9 and waited for the Neo. Had some quirks with the 1008 firmware update out of the box but all is well now. From 3 monitors to 1 (giant) one, it's made my WFH life SO MUCH BETTER. Now to do something about this stock stand... I wonder if there's a way to get a free mount somehow...

Awesome Video! Just did my very first build ever, and have the G9 being delivered tomorrow (knock on wood) as the icing o the cake. Benn running crappy work monitors that are only 60hz. Excited not only for top tier gaming, but also to mess with DAWS like Ableton, making music and videos with my Mavic Air 2. Love the way the mount cleans up the desk as well!

The problem with hdmi is because your GPU only had HDMI 2.0, 2.1 arrived with the 30xx series.

I'll be interested to see the outcome of your discussions with Samsung about the HDMI issues. Like you, I am using a G9 Neo now with a M1 Mac and a 3080 on my Windows box. I'm annoyed they removed the second DisplayPort input because that would have been perfect to solve this issue. For now, I'm using the DisplayPort input with my Windows box so that I can use the higher refresh rates with gaming, but am suffering through 60 Hz over HDMI with my Mac.

For people who already have the G9, and are “happy with the image quality”, why would that matter if we don’t know what we may be missing? Would you say the difference is huge? On paper 2,048 zones vs 12 makes me think it’s going to be night and day but in practice how much better? Besides the better blacks do colors pop more? I noticed on my oled tv using windows is great because the natural contrast makes it easier in the eyes for me. Would you say the mini led would be better for productivity as well? Thanks!

Thx for the review! You mentioned that even new high end GPUs can struggle to keep up with this monitor. I can't seem to find any benchmarks with the 3080 or 3080ti used specifically with this display. Do you know of any sources that looked at this? I suppose one would have to balance being able to run games at their highest settings vs running them at this resolution...

i have the old g9 and it does not flicker that much that it bothers me at all it will do it on a certain app till i close it reopen it then it goes but thats it. the thing im bothered about is can u use 240hz and restart the pc and monitor comes on as normal. because this one i can the monitor will not come on at all on a restart i have to plug another monitor in then switch back.

Nice video! How are you able to connect both the PC and Mac at the same time, and get 240 Hz, 120 Hz refresh rates, respectively? As I understand, these both require DisplayPort connection, but there is only one DisplayPort input on the Neo, as you mentioned. Are you having to physically swap the cables at the back of the monitor to switch between the two? That seems like it would be a pain if so. Or, are you using some sort of KVM? If you’re doing that, which one are you using? I’ve found it impossible to find one that supports this resolution at 240 Hz with G-Sync. Thank you!

The changed the the ports because people usually have one PC, an Xbox and/or a PlayStation. I'm curious about these reviews that got a peak brightness of over 2000 nits. Both Hardware Unboxed and Rtings peaks at just over 1000 nits in HDR Dynamic mode, which is the brightness mode. Even in windows 11 it'll list the monitor as 1,015 nits. I have this monitor and I love it but I hate the fact they slapped HDR2000 on it when it can't hit it.

It does hit 2300 nits but only in very specific circumstances and not for long. So yeah, it's a bit misleading. Despite that, you'll be hard pressed to find another monitor that does HDR this well.

Bought mine a week ago only paid 1,599.99 U.S. And absolutely love it.. Only thing bad I would say is I am using a Secret labs desk. which I love but the monitor does take up a lot of space. So far I have played Cyberpunk , Age of empires which looks great Waiting on Starfield. I am running it on a RTX 3090 card. Another thing to mention is setting up took a bit but there are plenty of KZbin videos out there to help. Thanks for your video.

So, here’s where I think the video content could be more helpful. 1st, when you say you fixed the issue, note that the cable might have helped, but the dock likely solved the problem with the MacBook. Another point, it would help to know what Mac you have, as I would be interested in seeing if it is the same as mine, so I know what to expect from the pairing. Now as for the Mac, 60 Hz issue and probably the PC too. Well, the HDMI port on the latest Macs is only HDMI 2 and will never get 120 Hz from it. If you try a higher speed Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI cable from the Mac, you might just get your 120 Hz issue resolved. Overall though not a bad video, it’s refreshing to see somebody that actually paid for it. I presently use the G9 and I will not upgrade, until somebody proves to me they got the MacBooks to run at 120 Hz without a docking station, as the Caldigit is a bit of a pricey option for me.

How do you update the firmware on the previous G9 to fix those problems ? Why are samsung bad at updating firmware on their TV's ? why would you pay 1800 pounds for a monitor unless you are a business user? The original invention of these formats were Phillips and LG.The high costs were due to difficulties in screen manufacture and breakage. Presumably the high angle of curviture is why they charge soo much in manufacture? Why call it NEO ? Soo many other products in the idustry call their products Neo its not copywrightable

i believe i have a better solution for mac users that ive been using with my samsung CRG9, with the same caldigit docking station. I use two cables that go from the caldigit into the monitor, then use PBP and i have 2 displays in one with no bezel, the benefit is that now when you go fullscreen on a video, the other half is still available, also screen sharing is a lot easier. The downside is you need two cables, and you might be limited in the refresh rate. Try it out!

Thinking about “upgrading” to the Neo G9. My question: Desk space…is 24” depth adequate? Understand that from the specs the Set Dimension with Stand (WxHxD) 45.3 x 21.1 x 16.5 in. My desk surface is a built in solid granite up against a wall with 24” depth. So will the center of the monitor be too close using the included stand. Leaning against any wall mounted alternative because there is a window in the area that complicates that option. I don’t want to end up to close to the monitor. Doing some simple calculations, is the center of the monitor approx 7” depth further than the edges at the curve?

Samsung say many of the issues with this monitor are solved with their firmware update.....but I can't find a decent video on a step by step on how to do it. If you ever have time I hope you could create one walk us thru how to go about it. I'm not very computer literate an this is one thing holding me back from a purchase.......even with Samsung today discounting it by 500. Did you noticed any pop or cracks on the back of the monitor where the RGB leds are? Some ppl are complaining about it. Other than that, nice video!

I would go G97T and just return it if you get a dud. Took me 3 tries but I see they are around 1k USD right now. What a value.

Hey this is awesome and thanks for this. I saw on Samsung's US site there were a lot of complaints about across the board but given your sponsored I figured you would be more open. I assume the problems were with earlier units but some of the reviews are pretty recent. did you see any issues beyond performance

For a $2,499 monitor, I’d get a second machine to hook up to the monitor. Bur seriously, I love that Logitech built-in KVM switch. If they had one with Cherry MX switches, I’d order one. Also, thanks for the warning about the HDMI issues - I’m actually in the same boat: I have a Mac and a PC hooked up to separate sets of keyboard, mouse, monitors. Reducing the duplication would free up so much desk space!
