No up for that short "I have an idea, it might be risky" "Just do it" interaction between Rayner and Burnham? It is so short, but so good, since it a) shows how far the trust between Burnham and Rayner has come. and B) means that mister "62 % is good, we take that risk" actually at least thinks about it by now. In episode 1, they would have argued about a call like that and ended up on different points. In episoe 9, Burnham trust him to make the right move blindly.

the case imploding as it flew out of the shuttlebay is not a plot hole. it makes sense that it impleded as it was exposed to violent gravitational forces. originally it had been stationed in the lagrange point where gravity is in equilibrium between opposing forces, cancelling one another out. a box of (duranium) tissues would be fine there.
@chuckintexas
@chuckintexas 3 ай бұрын
NONE of that is _how_ gravity _WORKS_ .
@HermanVonPetri
@HermanVonPetri 3 ай бұрын
@@chuckintexas Hah! I've seen this explanation repeated here in the comments, but... Any object in free fall experiences NO sensation of stress from gravity except for: (1) when it is being accelerated by physical contact with something pushing it. (2) when it is being stretched by strong tidal forces over a short span of space Option 1 is out since the canister is not in physical contact with anything pushing on it. So that wouldn't do it. However, 2, it _is_ in proximity to two large black holes which can create the types of tidal forces that could rip apart something in orbit. Except for three problems with that. One, seemingly paradoxically, the bigger the black hole is the gentler the forces are outside of the event horizon. Two, the further you are from the black hole, the gentler the forces are. And three, the smaller the object is the gentler the forces are because the gravity has to be significantly stronger on one end of the object than the other to rip it apart. That's more likely for a large object like Discovery or the Breen ship than a car sized canister. Counterpoint: The structural integrity fields of the ships could (in a sci-fi way) be enough to hold the ships together if I suppose the canister didn't have one.
@KyleWitten
@KyleWitten 3 ай бұрын
The Pringles Can blowing up doesn't bother me. The episode title explains it. A Lagrange Point is a region of gravitational stability because competing gravitational forces cancel each other out. A real world example from today is the James Webb Space Telescope. It is located at a Lagrange Point. So, not only was it damaged from the collision, unless it was jettisoned back into the Lagrange Point, it would have been subjected to extreme gravitational forces for the first time ever. They got the science right on this one.

You said you wanted some ideas as to what we think we'll see on the other side of the portal. 1) Dr. Kovich. He started Disco on this journey. I think he's the sixth scientist who "died" (Jinaal's word), but really he mastered the Progenitor's tech. Either he's a human who is now immortal b/c of the Progenitor's tech or a Lanthanite. 2) Based on the musical cue from TMP in Epi. 9 of this season, we'll see the race of beings that created the machines that sent V'Ger home, or maybe the life-form from the end of the movie that was the amalgamation of Decker/Ilia (list them as missing), or both. 3) We'll see many of the ancient races of the galaxy there, a la the end of Babylon 5, who were testing the younger races. Perhaps we'll see Q, Iconians, the race that created the androids in the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and, perhaps, a cameo from Salome Jens reprising her role (she's 89 years old now!).

Cloaking Technology has always caused distortions. I agree that they could have made the effect more subtle but it’s kinda needed for the establishing shots to work. Also the capsule was balanced at the Lagrange point between the black holes for years. It breaking apart when jettisoned, door wide-open, and not equally balanced between two black holes makes perfect sense.

You're wrong about that 5th down. The whole point of that location it was in (the lagrange point) is that it's a place where the gravity of the two black holes cancels out, making it "safe". The capsule being anywhere else outside that specific point is vastly different than the conditions it's spent the last 800 year in.

First, I have a bit of a beef with giving a down to the destruction of the "Pringle Can". While in the Lagrange point between the 2 black holes, it was in equilibrium and in little danger. Once it was expelled from the ship, there was no indication that it was into the Lagrange point. Any unprotected object would be ripped apart by the forces of the black holes. Second, I think that Burnham will get everyone to work together, bring back Lok, get a few answers of the universe, then ultimate everyone decides that it's better if the tech is destroyed. They all end up coming back to normal space, Lok takes over as the leader of the Breen and brokers a deal with the Federation and everyone lives happily ever after.

But, on the other hand, I'll let this one "Down" you gave slide because your Jeffrey Combes joke literally made me laugh out loud.

The oil bath made me laugh. I needed a good laugh. I fear that the finale will be a disappointment because of Moll’s stubbornness and the Breen’s nature. Michael stands alone. I will be delighted if I’m wrong. BTW where are the Klingons? I haven’t seen a Klingon in the 32 century. If I missed it please let me know.

After they yeeted everything bad from the show by going to the future i think it's safe to say whoever had the reigns for seasons 3 through 5 was smart enough to not ever touch the Klingons again in Discovery. Ever. At all. In-universe you can probably chalk it up to them poking the wrong bear and Quo'nos lies in shambles, Klingons are like 2 steps above Kazon on a good day. Anyway, where'd you hear that? We have any leaks already?

The part with the casing is NOT a plot hole. We have no spacial awareness in this scene. The Pringles can was in a Lagrange Point, a stable orbit point, around the 2 black holes at the start, but now it was moving away from the shuttle bay thus not in a stable orbit anymore and probably now in a decaying orbit into an object with MASSIVE gravitational forces. It is similar to submarines being just above crushing depth or the scene in Babylon 5 with the white star and the shadow vessel flying into Jupiter. If you cross a certain point, depth, or height (as in decaying orbit), it is game over.
@LeeCarlson
@LeeCarlson 3 ай бұрын
Remember that what you have been calling "a Pringles can" was a SEALED cylinder of a material that can deflect all forms of sensors. However, when it is blown out of the dreadnaught's shuttle bay, it has been OPENED, so it is no longer sealed. It pays to notice details when giving your "ups and downs."

Sorry but you’re wrong about the container. It was explained earlier in the episode that the container was put into a place between both black holes where it was in perfect equilibrium. That is why it didn’t come apart. Plus, the integrity of the container had been breached by it being opened.

Saru's part was modular in this episode, detached from the main plot and cast. Owo and Detmer are Lost in Space, I think. Feels like they could have been fit in. Look how much time we spent on four cast members in Iron Man suits. THAT can be done anywhere, anytime. They should have had Owo and Detmer phone home in front of a cheapie background. Also -- aren't Burnham and Adira a little short for a stormtrooper?

Yeah, she is a pretty terrible Captain. Also, are they the only people in the whole fkn federation to constantly make these potentially universe changing decisions? A president, one captain, second in command (sometimes), maybe a ambassador from some random world and last some random dude that should be locked up with the key thrown away for trying to end the universe for SELFISH REASONS (Book). And the new "bad guy" does the EXACT SAME THING for SELFISH REASONS, and this great guy Book WANTS TO SAVE HER, wait for it.... FOR SELFISH REASONS... sigh The writers are a fkn joke. THIS IS NOT STAR TREK! Idk wtf it is, but it's def not Star Trek. Btw, isn't the Breen supposed to be like 250cm tall and incredibly strong? So strong not even Klingons stands a chance physically? Or that randomly changed in the 1000 years from when ds9 was taking place so a tiny woman can pick a fight and win? Or how tf did they get away from ARMED GUARDS in the ending when on their ship... There was ONE character I liked and cared about, and that was Saruu, and they managed to fk that up to... If this is what I get if I want "new start trek" I no longer want new star trek. I REALLY like Lower decks, Strange new worlds and even Prodigy, but THEY are ALSO getting canceled. JUST CANCEL THIS, THE SERIES IS COMPLETE TRASH!

It hasn't been in that location all that time, if you know the idea of a lagrange point? it is a position normally between two astral bodies where NO gravimetrical stresses or effects are felt. this is because they two bodies cancel each other out or are too weak to act upon it. in this case those two black holes are going to rip anything apart if it's in the wrong place by a metre either way. discovery survived thanks to the shielding and build of the ship this is a tin can in a machine capable of grinding cars.

Man, I'm getting this awful feeling like they're gonna kill Saru. I hope they don't, but they're definitely hinting that way. More broadly, this season has absolutely been discovery's best! The insights into Burnham's character, contrasted with her past angry self, was great and really showed not only how far she'd come, but also bridged the newer 'cocky' Burnham as a kind of mask for her own insecurities. Also, Saru and T'rina, as sceptical as I initially was, they've turned out so wholesome and loving in an understated way that I'm completely sold. Rayner has been a great addition to the crew. Almost like the show runners are responding to some of Discovery's detractors as the 'show where everyone discusses their feelings and cries'. He's not that way inclined and still finds a place among the crew. My only real complaint is Mol and the breen. Mol now, essentially, taking the place of the primarch in L'ak's name is weird. Additionally, we've seen so much Breen and learned some really interesting things about them, but they so often feel like faceless (cryo suits doing all the work here) goons to be easily overcome ( a bit like starfleet security tbh lol ) Also, there have been several episodes where Book had little use to the story other than some flimsy excuse to keep him around. He literally asks what he should do for some episodes lol. I'm always anxious going into a discovery final episode, but this is the most hopeful and excited I've been for this show since it started, which makes it all the more a massive shame that this is the last we will get to see of it

@@marcusjohansson668 I really did not expect them to be able to do worse in the last season than any season before but they've really surprised me with how truly awful the writing can get. The acting got slightly better as the show went on so Burnham is not completely unwatchable anymore but the actual good actors on the show get too little screen time. It's rather unfortunate. I could not possibly have lower expectations for the series finale and yet, I'm sure they'll find a way to disappoint.

Series starts with Battle of the Binary Stars and ends with the Battle of the Binary Black Holes - I see what they did there. I thought the shot of the Discovery flying out of the Breen shuttlebay was like their re-do of that early cgi demo with Discovery flying out of the starbase asteroid thing. The engines being up and above the secondary hull is very reminiscent of the early design.
